Abstract: Structure for safely administering a medication orally in which a soluable medicated body is maintained on a rod during dissolution by the configuration of that portion of the rod embedded in the medicated body. A method of manufacturing an enlarged end for the rod comprises forming convolutions of coiled sheet material in which the sheet material is embossed before coiling. Handle means in angled relation to the rod and spaced from the medicated body prevents inadvertent swallowing of the medication and/or the rod. The handle means can be unitary with the rod or separable and reusable being made integral by a resilient gripping means.
Abstract: A cartridge or injecting device for storing and dispensing medical solutions, such cartridge being characterized by a tubular member with a needle on one end having an opening therethrough communicating with the interior of the tubular member. A slidable drive stopper in the other end of the tubular member has thereon an elongated plunger for advancing and retracting the drive stopper. A non-retractable stopper in the tubular member, in contact with the forward end of the drive stopper, has therethrough a longitudinal opening. The non-retractable stopper is therefore shifted forwardly when the drive stopper is advanced thus serving as a visual indicator showing that medical solution has been ejected from the cartridge.
Abstract: High pressure oxygen is released through a side of an open-ended ventilating bronchoscope or laryngoscope into its lumen in a direction toward a distal end. The oxygen draws air through the proximal end. Medical gasses and vapors are drawn through an entrainment arm at the side of a ventilating endoscope by oxygen which is released near the distal point of confluence of the entrainment arm and the scope lumen.
Abstract: A transparent container is provided which is coated on the interior surface with a coherent barrier layer of metal. Stainless steel is a preferred barrier coating for glass equipment adapted to contain biological media.
Abstract: An article for treating menstrual fluid employs a cover member forming an enclosure, an absorbent layer positioned within the enclosure for absorbing the menstrual fluid, a water-proofing layer also positioned within the enclosure for preventing the menstrual fluid absorbed by the absorbent layer from permeating to the outside of the cover member and a deodorizer composition such as active carbon and the like located within the enclosure and having the function of absorbing and holding the menstrual fluid and simultaneously removing the odor released from the menstrual fluid.
Abstract: An inhalation device having an elongate housing having one or more passageways for the passage of air therethrough. Each passageway, of relatively small diameter, opens into an emptying chamber, of relatively greater diameter, adjacent that end of the housing which is adapted for insertion into the mouth or nose of a user. Adjacent that end of the emptying chamber closest to the passageway(s), the housing has means for receiving or presenting a unit dose of powdered medicament for administration. During inhalation, the air stream passing over and directed into the powdered medicament holder entrains the powdered medicament which is then carried into the nose, throat or lungs of the user where beneficial or therapeutic action of the medicament occurs.
Abstract: A substantially rectangular disposable diaper having a longitudinal dimension defined between end margins and a shorter transverse dimension defined between side margins is prefolded and packaged in a unique configuration including a double-pleat fold on each side of the diaper. Each double-pleat fold includes an inner panel overlying a central section of the diaper and an outer panel overlying the inner panel. Each outer panel includes two wing sections; one on each side of a transversely extending medial line of the diaper. Therefore, the four wing sections of both outer panels are disposed in pairs of two; one pair being on each side of the transversely extending medial line. The two wing sections which are on the same side of the medial line diverge from each other in a direction from the medial line to an end margin of the diaper. The double-pleat folded diaper is folded along the transversely extending medial line to complete the prefolded configuration in which the diaper is packaged.

Abstract: A teat cautery bullet or device for insertion through the teat orifice and into the papillary duct of an injured teat of a dairy cow or similar animal to control hemorrhaging and prevent formation of a blood clot in the teat orifice or papillary duct is formed by molding of solid material which is soluble by liquid in said teat to control such hemorrhaging and clotting. The device comprises a nose portion tapered to facilitate insertion, an integral neck portion tapered to facilitate retention, and an integral base portion to facilitate insertion and removal and of such width as to prevent passage or loss of the device upward into the teat sinus.
Abstract: A parenteral liquid bottle with a sealed leak testing chamber in its closure. This leak testing chamber has an opening sealed off by a protective thermoplastic-metal film with a permanently stretched section extending across the opening. This permanently stretched section of the film maintains either a "concave" or a "convex" shape without a pressure differential across the film. A vacuum source temporarily applied to an external surface of the film causes the film to "toggle" from its concave to its convex position indicating the chamber is properly sealed. Failure to so toggle indicates a leak in the chamber.
Abstract: A polymeric wall adapted to release drug at a controlled rate for a prolonged period of time from a reservoir comprising a drug and a carrier which is permeable to the drug and saturated therewith during said prolonged period of time, to a body environment or a drug receptor site, the wall comprising a mixture of a polymer which is biologically compatible with said environment or site and maintains its integrity while in contact therewith, has a glass transition temperature between ambient temperature and 150.degree.
Abstract: A disposable diaper adhesive closure means is provided in which an adhesive tab used to apply the diaper about an infant is permanently attached to the diaper at one end, and the opposite free tacky end of the tab is folded over and releasably adhered to a central portion of the tab which is provided with a release coated surface. A string separator attached to the adhesive tab is interposed between the folded over free tacky end of the tab and the central portion leaving an exposed string end so that the exposed string end can be pulled to release the free end of the tab for use in fastening the diaper about a baby. The string remains attached to the tacky free end of the tab. This eliminates the need for disposal by the consumer of a cover strip or of any other part of the adhesive closure means when the diaper is applied.
Abstract: A pre-formed surgical sponge to be used with or without suction in surgical procedures. The sponge has generally a cup or pouch shape and is formed of porous or sponge-like material such as non-woven cloth, polyurethane foam or other plastic foams. In one embodiment of the invention the sponge is readily detachable from the tip, so that it can be rapidly replaced during a surgical operation.
Abstract: Methods, compositions and products are described which inhibit the development of undesirable conditions arising as a result of microbial formation of ammonia from urea in excreted urine. Amino acid compounds are employed.
Abstract: A surgical wrap for covering or isolating extremities during surgical procedure is provided. The wrap provides a barrier to bacterial migration and is substantially conformable to the extremities. It is constructed to exhibit simultaneously the properties of stretchability and fluid-imperviousness. A manner of arranging the wrap into a form suitable for compact packaging and for facile application during surgery is also provided.
Abstract: The invention is directed to an active intrauterine device comprising a hydrophobic substrate of high mechanical resiliency, wherein the substrate including within the volume thereof inclusions of polymerizied hydrophilic substances grafted on the hydrophobic substrate and cross-linked, and in which water-soluble chemical agents have been stored previously, these agents being adapted to perfuse through the hydrophobic substrate when the latter is placed in an aqueous medium.
Abstract: A multi-layer diaper includes a porous facing layer to be positioned adjacent an infant's skin, and absorbent batt, and a water-impervious backing sheet. The facing layer is provided with areas of preferential liquid flow, surrounded by areas of increased water repellency relative to the areas of preferential liquid flow. The areas of preferential liquid flow are in the form of thinned areas, areas of increased wettability or areas of normal wettability surrounded by water repellent borders. The flow paths are spread over at least the central portion of the facing layer to direct liquid to the absorbent batt.
