  • Patent number: 7318713
Abstract: Injection molding and blow molding systems that include screws having low L:D ratios are provided. The systems are capable of producing microcellular polymeric materials. In some cases, the systems may be formed by retrofitting conventional polymer processing systems. Retrofitting may involve changing (e.g., machining or replacing) existing components of the conventional system, as well as, adding new components to the system. For example, retrofitting generally involves replacing the conventional polymer processing screw with a new screw designed to satisfy conditions needed for processing microcellular materials. In other cases, the systems may be newly manufactured. The retrofitted or newly manufactured systems of the invention are considerably less expensive than newly manufactured microcellular processing systems having higher L:D ratios.

  • Patent number: 7311866
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for producing a three-dimensional composite structure and a method for producing the mold for the three-dimensional composite structure. The mold is formed of at least one rigid die member and a second thermoplastic die member. The second thermoplastic die member is formed by coupling a rubber flexible pattern to a surface of the first die member. Vacuum or pressure is applied to a heated thermoplastic sheet to cause the heated thermoplastic sheet to deform about the flexible pattern, thereby forming the second die. Strips of reinforced polymer thermoset pre-preg material are then positioned within the cavities formed by the flexible pattern and are allowed to cure. Optionally, heat, pressure, and vacuum may be applied to the mold construction to facilitate the curing of the thermoset materials.

  • Patent number: 7303717
Abstract: A pair of form keys and a method for forming reverse drafts in foam parts are disclosed. A male form key is reciprocally mounted in a first mold half in a retracted position. A female form key is rotatably mounted in a second mold half in a neutral position. The first mold half includes a first drive pin that when engaged, moves the male form key into engagement with a foam sheet to form an undercut as the first and second mold halves are closed. The first mold half also includes a second drive pin that engages the female form key as the first and second mold halves close rotating the female form key into engagement with the foam sheet and the male form key. After closure of the mold and the product is formed, the mold is opened. As this occurs, the drive pins are disengaged and the male form key retracts and the female form key rotates to their neutral positions. The formed product may then be stripped from the mold while maintaining the reverse draft or undercut.

Abstract: A valved introducer sheath is used to facilitate the insertion of a flexible medical device into a body. The elongated valve of the valved introducer sheath is constructed of a foam material that is injected into the sheath and sliced longitudinally to create one or more self-sealing slits through which flexible medical devices can be passed. As a medial device is passed through the self-sealing slit(s) at a proximal end, the self-sealing slits seal around the medical device before opening at a distal end. The elongated valve is also affixed to at least some of the inner surface of the sheath. The valve will tear into halves along at least one of the self-sealing slits when the sheath is peeled.

  • Patent number: 7294295
Abstract: While steam is supplied to flow channels to heat inner cavity surfaces to a temperature equal to or higher than the heat distortion temperature of a molding resin, the resin mixed with a supercritical fluid is injected from an injection molding machine into a mold cavity. When the injection of a predetermined quantity of the resin is completed, the supply of the steam to the flow channels is stopped, and cooling water starts to be supplied to the flow channels. The inner cavity surfaces are thus quickly switched from a heated state to a cooled state, cooling and solidifying the resin into a molded product of good appearance which is free of broken cell marks on its surface.

  • Patent number: 7281546
Abstract: A method and system are shown for protecting the threaded ends of tubular goods such as oil field tubulars from physical damage and corrosion due to environmental factors. A thread protector is formed of a polymeric body having cylindrical wall portions which engage the threaded ends of the tubular goods. Instead of relying upon a separate thread compound or corrosion inhibitor applied to the exposed threads, the polymeric body has incorporated therein a corrosion inhibiting compound, which is blended within the polymeric body as a part of the manufacturing process used to mold the polymeric body. The thread protector of the present disclosure includes a weather barrier to minimize exposure of the threaded ends of the tubular goods to moisture and other contaminants. • Patent number: 7273571
Abstract: A plastic table structure includes a tabletop comprising a thin polymer shell layer surrounding an expanded foam core. The multiple layers of the finished tabletop are molded concurrently in a one-pass biaxial or centrifugal rotational molding process, and cured in an oven. The method includes the steps of introducing polymeric material into a mold, and rotating the mold while heating it to a first temperature so as to form a molten shell of a portion of the polymeric material on the inside of the mold. A foaming agent is introduced within the mold and mixes with a second unmelted portion of the polymeric material and distributes throughout the mold. When the mold reaches a second higher decomposition temperature, the foaming agent causes expansion of the second portion of the polymeric material, forming an expanded foam core inside the shell.

  • Patent number: 7267534
Abstract: The invention provides systems, methods, and articles useful in the production of foams, and, in particular microcellular foams. The systems include a restriction element that reduces the backflow of polymer melt in an extruder while polymeric material is injected into a mold or ejected from a die. The restriction element is positioned upstream of a blowing agent injection port to maintain the solution of polymer and blowing agent in the extruder above a minimum pressure throughout an injection or ejection cycle, and preferably above the critical pressure required for the maintenance of a single-phase solution of polymer and blowing agent. The systems can be used in injection molding, blow molding, or in any other processing techniques that include injection or ejection cycles.
