  • Patent number: 6425132
Abstract: A CATV system in which a technician in the field requests via a field client that a node of the CATV system be tested for ingress. The CATV system includes a headend facility that is coupled to a CATV distribution network. The CATV distribution network includes a plurality of nodes through which upstream signals are transmitted to the headend facility. A method of ingress testing for use in the CATV system includes one step of receiving at the headend facility a first reverse telemetry signal transmitted by a first field client that is coupled to the CATV distribution network at a first location downstream from the headend facility. Another step of the method includes selecting at the headend facility a first test node from the plurality of nodes of the CATV distribution network, wherein the selection is based upon the received first reverse telemetry signal.

  • Patent number: 6418558
Abstract: A video and telephony signal distribution network is provided. The network includes a head end for transmitting to a plurality of remote units. The network further includes at least one optical/electrical converter unit that transmits to the remote units over at least two coaxial cables coupled to a common optical/electrical converter unit. Each remote unit transmits upstream electrical data signals over its associated coaxial cable to the optical/electrical converter unit using a common bandwidth. The optical/electrical converter unit converts and frequency shifts the upstream electrical data signals from at least one remote unit to form an optical upstream data signal for transmittal to the head end such that the frequency spectrum used for the upstream communications is simultaneously used on each of the coaxial cables of to optical/electrical converter unit.

  • Patent number: 6415438
Abstract: An interactive television trigger has a time attribute value that indicates a future time when the trigger is to be executed. In many situations, the trigger is sent to the receiver unit prior to the future time (e.g., to account for bandwidth limitations or to allow prefetching of an information resource associated with the trigger). Redundant triggers may be sent as the future time draws closer. In this way, if the receiver unit did not receive a previously sent trigger for some reason, a redundant trigger is available for execution. The receiver unit may ignore duplicate triggers. The time attribute value also may indicate a life span during which the trigger is valid so that, if a user switches video channels but returns to a video channel for which execution of the trigger is desired, the trigger may be re-executed during the life span.

  • Patent number: 6415439
Abstract: Wireless communication protocol for enabling unidirectional communications in a simplex environment, or bidirectional communications in a duplex environment, between a controller and one or more controlled devices. The controller transmits video data and control data that may include voice synthesis coefficients and motor movement coefficients for processing by the controlled devices. The video data drives a display device to depict a scene, and the control data drives the controlled devices so that the controlled devices behave as characters in the scene depicted on the display device. Each controlled device is operable for recognizing messages directed to the device and for parsing these messages into control signals for a number of end effectors, such as speech synthesizers, servo motors, lights, heat sources, pumps, etc.

  • Patent number: 6412112
Abstract: A system for distributing digital data over a video channel to a plurality of remotely located client terminals. The system involves selecting a set of digital data to be distributed and converting it to an intermediate format compatible with video broadcast. The intermediate data is then broadcast over a video channel during a time when no video content is being transmitted so that the intermediate format data takes the place of the video content. The intermediate format data is received at a remotely located client terminal where the set of digital data is recovered.

  • Patent number: 6412111
Abstract: A video source provides information to a communication device that results in an icon being displayed on the communications device during a preview of a television program or segment of a television program. The icon indicates to the user that a single button on a remote control or other user-controller device can be used to program the communication device, including television, video-cassette recorders, cable boxes, network computers, or the like, to display or record the desired program or program segment as the program segment is being televised or communicated. Specifically, during operation, the exact date, time, and source of the actual television program or program segment is encoded in an unused portion of a teletext data stream when the icon is present. If the communication device receives an appropriate command from its user-controlled device while the icon is displayed, a central processing unit within that communication device, saves the information together with a channel presently being viewed.

  • Patent number: 6405371
Abstract: A method of navigating through television programs is disclosed. A television receiver displays a mosaic image with sub-images representing the available programs. The receiver further receives an electronic program guide with program descriptions. Upon activating a “theme” button (42), the viewer can enter a desired program type, e.g. “movie”. In response thereto, the brightness of the sub-images representing programs that are not desired is reduced. The user is thus assisted in navigating through programs he is interested in, while maintaining the mosaic structure he is familiar with, and without losing the association between channels and their positions on the mosaic screen.

  • Patent number: 6401242
Abstract: Interactive Program Guide (IPG) data for television is delivered to integrated receiver-decoders (IRDs) in a decoder population via, for example, a satellite network. The IPG data provides scheduling information for global and local programming services which are carried via the satellite network as well as another network such as a CATV network or a terrestrial broadcast network. Each IRD is assigned to an IPG region using unit addressing. At the IRD, IPG data is filtered so that only the global data and the region-specific data for the IRD's IPG region is retained and processed by the IRD. Channel map data is also delivered to the IRDs so that bundles of IRD data can be filtered out using firmware filtering to discard program sources that are not present in the channel map. The IRD data which is retained after filtering is used to provide scheduling information via an on-screen display. A preferred source may be designated when there are duplicative channels on the different networks.

  • Patent number: 6397387
Abstract: An internet on-demand system for television presents internet content and traditional television programming as part of a single coherent interface. The system includes a server and a client capable of providing a dynamic graphical user interface. The system can display an internet gateway interface which actively scrolls through and highlights links to selected web pages which are organized according to templates corresponding to their content. The web pages are presented on the graphical user interface as channels as part of the same milieu as channels of traditional television programming. The user can select a channel from a rotary menu wheel or via channel-up, channel-down buttons on the remote control device. An intelligent agent passively filters selected web pages for a user to explore based on the user's past pattern of usage of the client.

  • Patent number: 6392716
Abstract: An arrangement is provided whereby after purchasing a television receiver, when a power cord is plugged in an outlet and the power is turned on, the television receiver is automatically set on an automatic presetting mode, and various information is displayed by on screen display (OSD) during the operation and upon completion of the operation, thereby allowing a user to visually confirm the operating condition. To this end, when a power plug 17 is inserted, a power switch of a power supply circuit 16 is turned on, a broadcast channel of a station is detected by a synchronizing signal and an AFT voltage and is automatically preset in a nonvolatile memory. During the presetting, a message that a presetting function is operating and a message indicating an operating condition are displayed on a CRT 3. Further, upon completion of all the presetting, a message on he completion of operation is displayed.

  • Patent number: 6384868
Abstract: When a sub-image (A) and a sub-image (B) are displayed as semi-moving pictures on a multi-screen, the fields of the input sub-images (A) and (B) are determined. By setting the field determination result as one condition for a write to the memory 114, the sub-images (A) and (B) can be stably written to the memory 114 in either odd fields (ODD) or even fields (EVEN), and can be read and displayed on the screen without flickering characters due to line flicker. Furthermore, when video signals are switched for a channel switch or an input switch, the operation remote controller 501 can issue a switch instruction so that a write to the video memory 509 is stopped according to the generated switch signal, and the image is displayed as a still image. In response to a new input video signal, the number of write increase lines or picture elements for a write to the video memory 509 is set to n. The writing operation is performed m times (m is a natural number) for every other field.
