  • Patent number: 7440219
Abstract: In a system and method for a non-contact measurement of the fly height of a slider above a magnetic data storage medium using electrostatic force, a slider with a read/write head flies over a magnetic data storage medium. A series of distinct voltages are applied between the slider and the magnetic data storage medium, and corresponding read-back signals are recorded. Using the recorded read-back signals, coefficients for an empirical curve-fit equation are calculated. The coefficients are normalized and converted into a fly height measurement.

  • Patent number: 7436621
Abstract: An example embodiment provides for an apparatus and method, for use in a tape drive system, that supplies tape azimuth error information transduced from servo read elements that are located on differing bumps of a magnetic read/write head. Non-azimuth error information is also transduced from servo read elements located on a read bump. The azimuth error and non-azimuth are utilized to correctly place the magnetic head at a currently selected track of the tape for which data is being written. In one implementation, the servo read elements utilized for transducing the azimuth information are substantially aligned with each other relative to a tape path and disposed on separate bumps. In another implementation, the servo read elements utilized for transducing the azimuth information are not substantially aligned with each other and are disposed diagonally on opposite bumps.

  • Patent number: 7428118
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for writing a magnetic servo track. In one example, a system includes a head assembly having first and second write elements, and a controller. The controller operable to receive a position signal associated with a position of the magnetic storage medium and energize the first write element to write a first magnetic servo pattern (e.g., repeating servo frames including a tone field). The controller is further operable to energize the second write element to write a second magnetic servo pattern (e.g., a mid-frame mark) at least partially overlapping the first pattern, wherein the relative position of the second pattern is adjusted in response to the position signal. The second pattern may be displaced relative to the first pattern in response to a lateral displacement of the magnetic storage medium to maintain a desired center line condition of the servo track.

  • Patent number: 6833970
Abstract: A data reader reads a medium holding user and non-user data that holds information relating to the user data. The reader has a read head that generates a data signal comprising user and non-user data. The user data is arranged into plural sets interspersed with the non-user data that identifies the user data within the sets. Processing circuitry receives and processes the data signal and obtains the user data from the data signal by using the non-user data to identify the user data within the data signal. The data reader is particularly suitable in situations having re-writes and overwrites.

  • Patent number: 6349010
Abstract: A recording apparatus includes a thin film magnetic head (20) with eight write units (21-28) positioned adjacent to each other in a transversal direction (y) to write data in parallel tracks on a magnetic tape (10). Switching arrangement 70 has a switch (SW) to switch from a normal mode to a combination mode. In the normal mode the switch is in a first position (D1) and the switching arrangement (70) couple a first data signal (S1) to a first write unit (21), a second data signal (S2) to a second write unit (22) etc., so that in the normal mode eight tracks (T21-T28) are written on the tape resulting in a first track density. In the combination mode the switch is in a second position (D2) and the switching arrangement couples the first data signal (S1) to the first and second write units (21 and 22), the second data signal (S2) to the third and fourth write units (23 and 24) etc.
