  • Patent number: 7283533
Abstract: A method for directly converting packet-based voice data of two non-compatible formats, (e.g., VoIP and VOATM), is described. A VoIP call agent sets a connection between a VoIP edge gateway and an interworking unit (IWU). The IWU allows the VoATM network to appear as a TDM network to the VoIP call agent. The VoIP call agent selects a virtual trunk group and channel identification code through the interworking unit and transmits the selection to a VoATM call agent. The IWU allows the VoIP network to appear as a TDM network to the VoATM call agent such that the VoATM call agent establishes a connection between the virtual trunk group and a VoATM network device. The IWU allows the VoATM network to appear as a TDM network to the VoIP call agent such that the VoIP call agent establishes a connection between the virtual trunk group and a VoIP network device.

  • Patent number: 7103036
Abstract: When a communication system is constructed by use of a plurality of data relay apparatuses of the present invention, it is possible to control an execution/non-execution of a compression/decompression for voice data so that the compression/decompression is not repeatedly executed regardless of a PBX. An ATM multiplexer sends out a transmission pattern to an apparatus adjacent to the ATM multiplexer via a PBX, and stops the compression/decompression of the voice data to relay the voice data transmissively, only when the ATM multiplexer receives the transmission pattern from the adjacent apparatus via the PBX. In other cases, the ATM multiplexer relays the voice data while executing the compression/decompression operation for the voice data.

  • Patent number: 6993026
Abstract: Supporting virtual private networks by using a new layer 3 address to encapsulate a network-bound packet so that its context information, from which a layer 2 (e.g., MAC) address can be derived, is preserved. If this encapsulation was not done, the layer 2 address would change over each segment of the network. Thus, the encapsulation preserves the concept of group identification, using at least a part of the context, over the entire network and not just at the edge of the network. If a packet is received from the network (to be forwarded to a customer), the layer 3 address that was added in the encapsulation is stripped off. The original layer 3 destination address may be used with a client device addressing table to determine a new context information, and a layer 2 (e.g., MAC) address of a destination client device.

  • Patent number: 6956835
Abstract: The system and method of the present invention uses a plurality of carriers by assigning user terminals to the plurality of carriers so that a minimum grade of service is met and so that throughput is maximized. Each serviced user terminal reports the channel quality of each of a plurality of carriers to a servicing base station(s). The reported channel qualities are then converted to maximum supported data rates for each of the user terminals and each of the carriers. These data rates are then used to allocate data service levels and data rates for each of the user terminals so that a minimum grade of service is met for each of the user terminals. Forward link transmissions, e.g., frames/data packets carried on forward channels (F-CHs), are then constructed and transmitted to meet the allocations.

  • Patent number: 6956821
Abstract: A path through a data network is calculated that accounts for priority levels of already-established paths. Potential new paths are determined taking into account priority level information associated with data network links. Of the determined paths, the path selected is preferably one having the least pre-emptive effect on lower priority traffic. The bandwidth reservation information for each data network link is determined along with the maximum bandwidth of each link and the available bandwidth at each priority level. Links with insufficient resources are eliminated from consideration. For the remaining candidate paths, determination for each link are make: which lower priority levels will be affected by the setup of the new path, how much reserved bandwidth will be pre-empted at each priority level, and how much free bandwidth is available at the lowers priority level. A path is selected that reduces or preferably minimizes some aspect of pre-emption.

  • Patent number: 6944158
Abstract: A data switch includes multiple switching modules interconnected over a backplane. The data switch maintains flow integrity while path transitioning. The flow integrity can be maintained by temporarily disabling one or more of the switching modules from transmitting data units over the backplane for a flow undergoing a path transition. The disable condition is imposed when the path transition is commenced, and is lifted after the path transition is completed and an interval has passed ensuring that all data units for the flow transmitted to the backplane prior to imposing the disable condition have cleared the backplane. The backplane includes a multicast fabric and a unicast fabric, wherein flow path transitions are made from the multicast fabric to the unicast fabric upon source learning. All switching modules are temporarily disabled from transmitting data units having as a destination address an address undergoing source learning to the backplane.

  • Patent number: 6940812
Abstract: Local concentration of accessing loads on a data buffer during data cell reading is reduced. Also, by providing sufficient time for a data cell reading operation with respect to data cell transmission timing, transmission rate fluctuation of CBR data cells in a transmitting side is reduced. When transmission of a new data stream is added, controller in a cell control unit refers to a transmitted data cell count of VC information processed through a slot immediately before. The controller determines whether a data cell transmitted through the slot immediately before is a head portion of a packet or not. If the data cell transmitted through the slot immediately before is the head portion of the packet, the controller only adds the VC information of the data stream to a shaper link list, and withholds transmission of the data cell.

  • Patent number: 6931003
Abstract: An apparatus, data structures, and method are provided for prioritizing data transmissions within a network. As applied to a switching station in a network, the method prioritizes transmissions from the network to determine which packets should be transmitted from the switching station first when multiple packets are routed to the same outgoing port of the switching station. A packet prioritization station is provided, preferably as an add-on to the switching station. The packet prioritization station has a cache in which the destination address of each incoming packet is associated with every origin from which it has received a transmission within a certain time period. The packet prioritization station operates to give priority to transmissions to those destinations that have a higher number of associated origins. Thus, packets that are probably en route to time-critical users or groups of users will be sent before those that are less time-sensitive.
