  • Patent number: 6775699
Abstract: A method and system is provided for integrating multiple client management polling functions. A polling agent serves as an integrated capacity planning polling agent and a performance monitoring polling agent and a central monitoring system issues capacity planning management data templates and performance monitoring data templates to the integrated polling agent. In response, the integrated polling agent requests capacity planning and performance monitoring data from a client and returns responsive data to the central monitoring system.

  • Patent number: 6775695
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for controlling document transfer between a web server coupled to a wide area network, such as the Internet, and a client coupled to the wide area network. The method includes the steps of monitoring the number of documents requested by a client in a current session, placing a document requested by the client in a file cache according to a caching algorithm that is based, at least in part, on the number of documents requested by the client in the current session, and accessing the document in the file cache when the document is requested subsequently by the client. The file cache may be associated with a proxy server that couples a local area network to the wide area network.

  • Patent number: 6738818
Abstract: A technique is provided for assigning an I/O controller to a host in a cluster. The cluster includes one or more hosts and one or more I/O controllers connected by a cluster interconnection fabric. In an example embodiment, an I/O controller is connected to the cluster interconnection fabric. The I/O controller connected to the fabric is detected and a network address is assigned to the I/O controller. An administrative agent is used to assign the I/O controller to a host that is connected to the cluster interconnection fabric. A message is sent to the host informing the host that the I/O controller is assigned to the host and providing the network address of the I/O controller.

  • Patent number: 6738803
Abstract: A unified web-based voice messaging system provides voice application control between a proxy browser having a web browser, and an application server via an hypertext transport protocol (HTTP) connection on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The proxy browser serves as an HTTP interface for a user device that lacks HTML and HTTP processing capabilites, such as an analog telephone, a cellular telephone, a voice over IP telephone, and the like. The web browser receives an HTML page from the application server having an XML element that defines data for an audio operation to be performed by an executable audio resource within the proxy browser. The audio resource, also referred to as a media resource, selectively executes the HTML tags and the audio operation based on the determined capabilities of the user device. If the user device does not have audio capabilities, the media resource ignores the audio operation, and merely presents the HTML information, assuming the user device has a display.

  • Patent number: 6725273
Abstract: A single protocol is used by sending systems to inform receiving systems what kind of data is arriving after the notification by this prefix protocol. The payload protocol follows, and is the real protocol that is used to exchange the data after the prefix protocol session. Although the PPP protocol allowed a negotiation of the used network protocol in the NCP, the PPP enforced that payload protocol data would always be carried inside HDLC framing. The payload protocol can be any protocol, and is only notified by prefix protocol HDLC frames, and therefore payload protocol data can be transferred inside any kind of protocol that is supported by a handler within the receiving system.

  • Patent number: 6718365
Abstract: Disclosed is a technique for providing, accessing, and using bookmark data to supplement information in a search engine database. The bookmark data indicates saved user selected network addresses, e.g., URLs, that are capable of being selected to access observable data, e.g., a page of text, images, sound file, movie file, etc., at the selected network address. A user computer receives user modifications to bookmark data and transmits the modifications to the bookmark data to a server over a network. A server gathers bookmark data indicating saved user selected network addresses that the user is capable of selecting to access observable data at the selected network address. A search engine server receives bookmark data gathered from multiple Internet users and determines an importance rating for at least one network address from the received bookmark data. The determined importance rating is included in the search engine index.

  • Patent number: 6687746
Abstract: Embodiments of the instant invention are directed to a domain management system, apparatus and method for hosting and assigning domain names. Embodiments of the domain management system comprise a name assignment system and a hosting system, wherein the hosting system comprises a domain retrieval system and a data storage apparatus. The name assignment system verifies availability and assigns domain names to requesting clients. The name assignment system comprises an input component, a confirmation mechanism and a name storage means. Preferred embodiments of the domain retrieval system comprise a scheduler, a parsing member having a plurality of redirectors and a plurality of servers. The domain retrieval system locates the domain referenced by the domain name by parsing header information and utilizing a wildcard DNS. Once the domain is located, the domain retrieval system forwards the domain to the user computer.

  • Patent number: 6678733
Abstract: A walled garden contains links to one or more servers providing network-based services. A walled garden proxy server (WGPS) controls access to the walled garden. When a user of a client wishes to access a service in the walled garden, the client sends a request to the WGPS including a plot number identifying the service and a ticket granting the client access to the service. The WGPS denies access to clients lacking a ticket or presenting invalid tickets. In response, the client contacts a gateway server (GS) having a database of users and associated access rights. The user presents authentication information to the GS. If the user positively authenticates, the GS generates a ticket containing a Box ID from the client, an expiration date, and set of bits representing the access rights of the user. The GS encrypts the ticket and gives it to the client.

  • Patent number: 6584494
Abstract: A method and associated system for promoting smooth communications in a chat system. A keyword list 3 stores keywords. A keyword-detection module 2 detects the sending of any keyword from another user terminal on any channel. A status-detection section 4, in response to the detection of a keyword, judges user status based on the status of the user terminal. A reporting module 9 sends the user status to the channel on which the keyword was sent. A report destination table 10 correlates the user status report destination with the keyword remark source And stores this information, and the reporting module 9 may report the user status to a report destination determined based on the report destination table. The real-time status of a user called by a keyword is reported, so as to support smoothly conducting conversations held in real time.

  • Patent number: 6584508
Abstract: A system and method for increasing the security of a data guard is disclosed. The data guard is based on a multi-part proxy that includes a first proxy agent that communicates with an inside computer network region, a second proxy agent that communicates with an outside computer network region, and a content-based filter application that reviews information that is passed between the first proxy agent and the second proxy agent. Both the first and second proxy agents can be based on existing firewall proxies. The proxy agents listen for protocol operations (e.g., IIOP requests or replies) and translate those protocol operations into protocol-independent data. The protocol independent data is then analyzed by a protocol-independent content-based filter. The behavior of the multi-part proxy can be further constrained through the use of software wrapper technology.
