The sheath allows the cannula to be presterilized and utilized without subsequent sterilization. The sheath comprises a body member defining an interior for receiving at least a portion of the blunt cannula, the body member including a first end and a second end, the second end having an opening for receiving at least a portion of the cannula. The first end including a wall member so constructed and arranged as to rip upon the exertion of a sufficient perpendicular force by an end of the blunt cannula. The body also includes side walls extending between the first and second end, the side walls are so constructed and arranged so as to slide back along the cannula toward the second end upon the tearing of the first end by the cannula and the application of a sufficient force upon the side walls.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1990Date of Patent: December 1, 1992Assignee: Baxter International Inc.Inventor: Thomas A. Patent number: 5165421Abstract: A hollow lumen cable is formed by helically winding inner and outer coils with the helices of each coil being in an abutting relationship and the outer coil inner peripheral diameter being less than the outer peripheral diameter of the inner coil. Preferably, each coil is multifilar. After the coils are wound, an unwinding force is applied to the outer coil and the inner coil is inserted into the outer coil to have its winding inclined opposite to that of the outer coil; and thence, the outer coil is allowed to contract to form an interference fit with the inner coil. The cable may be incorporated as part of a medical apparatus. For example, the cable distal end is connected to an implantable pump or other rotatable medical apparatus and the proximal end to a powered prime mover.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1990Date of Patent: November 24, 1992Assignee: Lake Region Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventors: Mark G. Patent number: 5163912Abstract: A catheter and stylet assembly comprising an elongate catheter having a lumen open at the proximal and distal ends of the catheter, and a connector adjacent the proximal end of the catheter for connecting the catheter to an extracorporeal support system. A stiff-flexible stylet is provided that is slidably receivable in the lumen of the catheter for providing rigidity to the catheter to facilitate introduction of the catheter into a chamber of a heart or other organ. First and second shoulders are provided on the catheter for abutting a latching portion of the stylet to secure the stylet in either of two positions relative to the catheter. The two positions include a first position wherein the distal end of the stylet extends outwardly from the distal end of the catheter for introducing the catheter into an artery or vein, or directly through the heart wall, and a second position wherein the distal end of the stylet is received within the lumen of the catheter for positioning the catheter in the heart.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1991Date of Patent: November 17, 1992Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Eric L. Patent number: 5163928Abstract: An elongated tubular catheter adapted for use in an artery or vein is provided. The catheter has a central axis, a proximal end and a distal end. The catheter has a distal portion including a curved portion and an end portion. The end portion has a first opening. The curved portion defines a zone substantially encircling the central axis and has openings facing the axis. The catheter terminates in the end portion. The end portion extends from the curved portion to a position substantially along the axis facing proximally. In use the curved portion centers the catheter and causes the end portion first opening and all other openings to be spaced from the wall of the artery or vein.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1992Date of Patent: November 17, 1992Assignee: Franklin Electronic Publishers, IncorporatedInventors: Eamonn Hobbs, William A. Patent number: 5158540Abstract: A low-profile angioplasty catheter is disclosed which is insertable through a guiding catheter. The angioplasty catheter has two balloons. The distal balloon dilates the stenosis. The proximal balloon is separately inflatable and selectively closes the annular passage between the angioplasty catheter and the guiding catheter. The angioplasty catheter has a central lumen with a series of openings allowing fluid communication from the central lumen into the annular passage proximally of the balloon which seals the annular passage. While the first balloon is inflated to dilate the stenosis, blood can be withdrawn from an arterial source through a lumen (or plurality thereof) in the guiding catheter and pumped into the annular passage between the angioplasty catheter and the guiding catheter.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1990Date of Patent: October 27, 1992Assignee: Leocor, Inc.Inventors: Bandula Wijay, Paolo Angelini

Patent number: 5154704Abstract: An apparatus clamps an intravenous (IV) tube used in an infusion device to control flow rate of IV fluid in the IV tube. A tube clip has first and second pinching members biased for exerting a pinching force on the IV tube. The first and second pinching members are positionable for insertion of the IV tube between them. A pair of clamping members are coupled to a clamp housing and are positionable for insertion of a portion of the tube clip between the pair of clamping members. The pair of clamping members operably engage the tube clip to variably offset the pinching force based on relative position of the pair of clamping members with respect to one another. A manual adjustment mechanism is coupled to at least one of the pair of clamping members and is used to manually adjust the relative position of the pair of clamping members relative to one another to set a desired flow rate in the IV tube.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1990Date of Patent: October 13, 1992Inventor: G.
