  • Patent number: 11202995
Abstract: A supported carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membrane is made by contacting a film of a carbon forming polymer on a polymer textile to form a laminate. The laminate is then heated to a temperature for a time under an atmosphere sufficient to carbonize the film and polymer textile to form the supported CMS membrane. The supported CMS membrane formed is a laminate having a carbon separating layer graphitically bonded to a carbon textile, wherein the carbon separating layer is a continuous film. The supported CMS membranes are particularly useful for separating gases such as olefins from their corresponding paraffins.

  • Patent number: 11167232
Abstract: Filter media comprising a pre-filter layer and related components, systems, and methods associated therewith are provided. In some embodiments, the pre-filter layer may be designed to impart desirable properties to the filter media, such as a high gamma and/or long service life, while having relatively minimal or no adverse effects on another property of the filter media that is important for a given application. For instance, a pre-filter layer may be used to improve the upstream removal of fine particulate matter, which may clog a downstream efficiency layer comprising submicron fibers and reduce filtration performance. The pre-filter layer may be configured to increase service life and/or increase the gamma of the filter media. Filter media, as described herein, may be particularly well-suited for applications that involve filtering air, though the media may also be used in other applications.

  • Patent number: 11130098
Abstract: The invention is an improved method of making a carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membrane in which a precursor polymer is pyrolyzed to form a carbon molecular sieve membrane that is then exposed to a conditioning atmosphere comprised of a target permeate gas molecule such as ethylene when the membrane is desired to separate it from a light hydrocarbon gas stream. The exposure to the ethylene desirably occurs prior to the CMS permeance and selectivity combination substantially changing (e.g., within 5 days) of cooling from the pyrolyzing temperature. The CMS membranes have shown an improved combination of selectivity and permeance as well as stability and are useful to separate gases in gas streams such methane from natural gas, oxygen from air and ethylene or propylene from light hydrocarbon streams.

  • Patent number: 11103827
Abstract: A two-stage gas-separation membrane system includes two identical membrane modules held within a single casing. A feed gas is directed into the first module, so as to produce permeate and retentate streams. One of the latter streams then becomes the feed gas for the second module, and reaches the second module through a core tube located within the module. The product of the second module is the product gas for the system. The gas streams entering the two modules flow in mutually opposite directions. This arrangement makes it feasible to provide a two-stage system while using only the number of ports that would be needed for a single stage.
