Patent number: 4399685Abstract: A device for measuring both force and kinetic energy includes a first cylindrical tube with one end closed, which tube is positioned over a calibrated spring that has one of its ends adjacent the closed end of the first tube. The other end of the spring extends beyond the open end of the first tube and is received within a second cylindrical tube mounted to slide over the first tube and having one closed end adjacent the other end of the spring. For measuring kinetic energy an indicator member is positioned about the first tube in such a manner that it is displaceable by contact with the open end of the second tube during compression of the spring and remains on the first tube at the point of maximum displacement when the compression of the spring is relieved. The position of the indicator with respect to the first tube is a measure of the kinetic energy that compressed the spring and the position of the second tube with respect to the first tube is a measure of that static compression force on the spring.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1981Date of Patent: August 23, 1983Assignee: Dover CorporationInventor: Richard E. Patent number: 4395909Abstract: An array of acoustic receiving transducers is placed next to the body to be imaged. Acoustic energy is initially projected through the body, picked up by these receiving transducers, and processed to determine any time domain deviations which exist in the paths actually followed by that energy from those paths which would have been followed if the body were substantially homogeneous and the transducer array substantially fixed. Further acoustic energy is also picked-up by the transducers, after reflection within the body to be imaged. The image of any given point within the body is then formed by selecting from each transducer output signal that portion which corresponds to the image forming energy emanating from that point, as corrected in accordance with the previously determined deviations.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1981Date of Patent: August 2, 1983Assignee: Imaging AssociatesInventors: Bernard D. Patent number: 4391135Abstract: Apparatus for determining the location of the liquid level in a well or borehole. A source of acoustic pressure pulses is coupled to the surface casing so that they are transmitted down the well and reflected by the gas-liquid interface. A transducer is also coupled to the well to produce an electrical signal in response to direct and reflected acoustic pulses occurring in the well. Gating circuitry responds to the transducer for starting and stopping the counting of clock pulses by a digital counter. A digital readout device is used to indicate the depth to the liquid level in the well. The acoustic pulse source is automatically actuated at predetermined times, and the depth to the liquid level and the time are automatically recorded. This produces a record of time and liquid depth which can extend over a period of several days.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1982Date of Patent: July 5, 1983Assignee: Mobil Oil CorporationInventors: John K. Patent number: 4388832Abstract: In an apparatus for receiving ultrasonic waves by optical means a laser beam illuminates a workpiece surface at which ultrasonic waves are manifest in the form of cyclically occurring surface deformations. The reflected light is transmitted to an optical interferometer as a measuring light beam and the beam exiting from the interferometer is converted to an electrical signal and amplified to provide a measuring beam responsive electrical signal. A portion of the laser beam immediately before being incident on the workpiece surface is also passed through the interferometer as a comparison beam. The exiting comparison beam light is converted to an electrical signal, amplified and time delayed to provide a comparison beam responsive electrical signal. By means of a subtracting circuit the comparison beam responsive electrical signal is subtracted from the measuring beam responsive electrical signal to provide a difference signal which is evaluated.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 1981Date of Patent: June 21, 1983Assignee: Krautkramer-Branson, Inc.Inventor: Walter Kaule
