Patent number: 4816057Abstract: The individual needles of a glass feeder mechanism which control the volume of the streams of molten glass sheared into discrete gobs are displaceable to adjust the size of the sheared gobs. The controller for the motor, which raises or lowers a stream, receives positional data from the plunger, which forms the gob into a parison, and determines the Parison Formation Point for that parison and raises or lowers the needle to maintain that point at a desired plunger location.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1988Date of Patent: March 28, 1989Assignee: Emhart Industries, Inc.Inventors: Steven J. Patent number: 4816050Abstract: In order to prevent an uncontrolled collapse of a quartz tube whose inner surface is being coated with a vitrifiable substance in making a preform or parison of an optical fiber, one or more streams of carrier gas entraining the ingredients of the coating substance through the quartz tube are supplemented by a stream of supplemental carrier gas whose flow is being continuously controlled to keep the overall mass-flow rate substantially constant. The outer tube diameter is photoelectrically monitored and incipient changes thereof are compensated by controlling a flow of additional carrier or inert gas which does not pass through the tube but joins the traversing gas flow at the tube outlet, inside a solids separator with a restricted exit aperture, to modify the pressure differential across the tube wall.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 1983Date of Patent: March 28, 1989Assignee: Cselt - Centro Studi e Laboratori Telecomunicazioni S.p.A.Inventor: Giacomo Roba

Patent number: 4813994Abstract: This relates to improvements in drives for shears, particularly shears for severing gobs from a glass runner. All of the drives incorporate a drive pinion for reciprocating racks which are secured to slides of the shear. The pinion is rotated first in one direction and then in the opposite direction to cause the blades of the shear to first move together and shear a gob, and then move back to the original position. Suitable reversing motors may be utilized, including an electrical servomotor or suitable hydraulic motor. On the other hand, the drive motor may be of the unidirectional type and an oscillating drive member may be incorporated in the drive system for converting the one-directional drive of the motor to an oscillating or reversing output. In addition, the drive of the pinion may be supplemented by a double-acting air motor which is connected to one of the racks.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 1987Date of Patent: March 21, 1989Assignee: Emhart Industries, Inc.Inventor: Constantine W.
