  • Patent number: 4559848
Abstract: A binary logic incrementally variable transmission is provided herein which can include a sequence of either, biratio stages, of quadriratio stages, or a combination of both. Each biratio stage has one binary selectable means, one reactive, one input, and one output component. Each quadriratio stage has two binary selectable means, two reactive, one input, and one output component. The maximum ratio of the transmission results when the reactive components of the stages are grounded to the casing. When the reactive components of the plurality of stages are coupled to their input and output components in binary logic sequence, an incrementally decreasing variable speed ratio of the input/output members of the transmission will result, that far exceeds the number of stages. The basic stage ratio is defined by the maximum ratio of, and the number of biratio stages in the particularly defined transmission sequence, with the state ratios of the stages being of a particularly defined order.

  • Patent number: 4537094
Abstract: Gear equipment for transferring rotary motion with torques of middle and high values. Between cooperating transmission members having offset parallel axes and confronting corresponding combined transfer grooves there are disposed anti-friction transfer elements in the form of balls. The transfer elements are rotatably disposed in equally angularly relationship in a circle in a guide gear which is rotatably mounted about a fixed axis between the transmission members. The guide cage may have uniformly circularly arranged inserts wherein the transfer elements are rotatably mounted.

  • Patent number: 4528861
Abstract: A constant mesh parallel shaft gearbox providing a plurality of ratios has its ratio controlled by having, in place of conventional synchronizer assemblies and dog clutches, rotary positive displacement pumps each having one element (4) connected to the gearbox shaft (2) and another (3) connected to a gear (1). With the pump recirculating fluid the gear (1) freewheels on the shaft (2), a valve ring (9) can prevent recirculation and hence lock the gear for rotation with the shaft. Unidirectional rotation of the gear on the shaft in each direction can be obtained passing pump flow through non-return valves 13 or 14. The invention is equally applicable to epicyclic gearboxes and where brake bands, for example, can be replaced by a rotary pump and valve in accordance with the invention.

  • Patent number: 4528872
Abstract: A change-speed apparatus in a tractor equipped with an engine has a planetary gearing mechanism settable between its two positions. Actuation of the mechanism to one of the two positions is hydraulically power-actuated, while actuation to the other of the two positions is automatically effected, as the hydraulic power is released, by a resiliently urging spring. Power-transmitting operative connection is therefore always maintained between the engine and running-drive wheels even when the hydraulic actuation power comes to extinct.

  • Patent number: 4528870
Abstract: The invention relates to a transmission for vehicles, in particular for automobiles with front wheel drive, which have a driving motor mounted transverse to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, whose drive shaft drives the primary shaft of an infinitely variable belt drive having a secondary shaft driven in the same direction of rotation by means of a drive belt and mounted coaxially with the drive pinion of a differential gear provided with output shafts. A reversing and reduction gearing, designed as a planetary gearset, is mounted coaxially with the secondary shaft of the belt drive and connected through its input member to the secondary shaft and through its output member to the drive pinion of the differential gearing, while its reactive section is fixed to the casing. As a result, a very compact transmission unit is achieved, having in forward drive position an output rotation in the same direction as the input rotation.

  • Patent number: 4524643
Abstract: The teeth of the sun pinion, planet wheels and hollow wheel have a profile correction changing continuously along the gear width and varying in opposite directions between the meshing gears. The sun pinion, hollow wheel and planet carrier are so mounted as to be fixed in the axial direction, whereas the planet wheels, allowed to slide individually in the axial direction on their stub shafts rigid with the planet carrier, are responsive to the axial force exerted by cup springs and mounted for swivel movement within predetermined limits on pendulum bearings. Furthermore, all the wheels, pinion and hollow wheel have crowned teeth.

  • Patent number: 4520694
Abstract: To effect soft gear change, without shifting jolts or shocks, the output torque of an automotive vehicular internal combustion engine is controlled in dependence on sensing of an overrunning condition signal derived, for example, by the conjunction of the accelerator pedal being in "idle" or "unoperated" condition, and the engine operating at a speed in excess of idling speed. Use of such an "overrunning condition" signal permits ready control of the engine without requiring additional control elements or systems coupled to the gear change apparatus or to the transmission.

  • Patent number: 4515038
Abstract: A power transmission mechanism for a motorcycle includes a change speed gear mechanism which includes a driven countershaft having one end projecting out through an opening in a transmission casing. The countershaft has a driving bevel gear formed integrally thereon and meshes with a driven bevel gear enclosed in a final gear case detachably connected to the transmission casing. • Patent number: 4513633
Abstract: A positive drive and an improved clutch actuating mechanism for use therein is disclosed. The positive drive has a housing (10) retaining a pair of spaced drive clutches (54 and 56) which lock a pair of axles (18 and 20), respectively, to housing (10) for one-to-one rotation. The clutches are moved from the disengaged to the engaged mode by axial movement of drive couplings (30 and 32) which include cam members (38 and 40) respectively. Input torque is transmitted from the housing to the cam members by means of a shaft (48) and the axial forces required to engage the clutches are transmitted from the shaft to the cam members through engagement of a shaft cam surface (49) and a ramp cam surface (51). In accordance with the invention, the engaging cam surfaces are defined by a common locus of generating lines (101-106) such that the cam surfaces are in surface-to-surface contact, rather than line contact or point contact, over the entire range of pivotal movement of the shaft, relative to the cam member.

  • Patent number: 4513637
Abstract: A high speed gearing assembly includes at least two interengaged composite gears having spur or single helical teeth. Each of the gears is formed of three annular gear parts which rotate about a common axis. The gear parts are juxtaposed in side by side relationship. The central part of each gear is offset relative to its adjacent end parts approximately one half a pitch length. Each end part is approximately one half the width of the central part. With a ratio of tooth engagement length to circular pitch length, i.e. the degree of overlap, of approximately 1.5, increased load capacity, steady running and reduced noise levels are attained.

  • Patent number: 4510820
Abstract: An improved drum type switch-over mechanism for a speed change device including a speed change pedal shaft and a speed change drum both of which are rotatably supported in axial alignment with one another on a transmission case and which are operatively connected to one another by way of an intermittent feed mechanism so as to allow the speed change drum to be rotated by a unit angle in a predetermined direction on every reciprocatable rotation of the pedal shaft by a predetermined angle. The improvement consists in that the pedal shaft is located in axial alignment with an input shaft of the intermittent feed mechanism, that a sun gear is formed on the input shaft while a plurality of planet gears are mounted on the pedal shaft for meshing engagement with the sun gear, and that a ring gear meshing with the planet gears is firmly fixed to the transmission case.

  • Patent number: 4506563
Abstract: In an automatic transmission gear of 4-speed advance type comprising at least 3 pairs of clutches including a friction clutch which hydraulically connects an input shaft and the carrier of Ravigneaux type planet wheel gears for the 4th speed, 2 pairs of brakes and one pair of oneway clutches, it is required to engage two pairs of clutches in order to shift the speed to the 3rd speed while it is necessary to engage another pair of clutches with one pair of brakes for the 4th speed, thereby presenting difficulties in setting transmission timings and an initial engagement torque. The hydraulic control system for an automatic transmission gear according to the present invention is capable of smooth transmission without causing transmission shocks and of improving the durability of clutches and brakes because in the system one pair of clutches is made to engage for the 4th speed in advance after completion of the 3rd speed shifting.
