  • Patent number: 6318496
Abstract: A steering booster system for a motor vehicle has an electronic control unit which senses by way of force or torque sensors the amount and direction of forces and torques applied to a manual steering wheel and correspondingly controls, via a transmission arrangement, the steering-force-assisting connection of an electric motor into a steering gear line coupling the manual steering wheel and the steered vehicle wheels. The manufacture of the system is simplified and the controllability of the force transmission between the electric motor and the steering gear line is improved by providing that the transmission arrangement has an electrically switchable clutch for each steering direction, i.e., left or right. The two clutches are arranged such that, when the rotating direction is the same at the input of the transmission arrangement assigned to the electric motor, they in each case cause another rotating direction at the output of the transmission arrangement assigned to the steering gear line.

  • Patent number: 6315319
Abstract: A chair for transporting a patient includes a base frame, a plurality of casters mounted to the base frame, a seat, and a push bar mounted to a back section of the seat for use when transporting the patient. A wheel is coupled to the base frame for movement between a downward brake-steer position, facilitating steering the chair during transport of the patient, and an upward neutral position. A brake mechanism brakes the casters when the brake mechanism is in a braking position and permits rotation of the casters when the brake mechanismn is in a releasing position. A brake-steer shaft is coupled to the brake mechanism. Movement of the shaft moves the brake mechanism between the braking position and the releasing position. The brake-steer shaft is pivotably coupled to the base frame. The brake-steer shaft is coupled to the wheel so that rotation of the brake-steer shaft moves the wheel between the brake-steer position and the neutral position.

  • Patent number: 6305704
Abstract: The end bushings (102, 102′) of the anti-twisting cross member (2) and the upper ends (201, 201′) of the outer sliding tubes (1, 1′) which are adapted to be coupled into the bushings, are provided laterally respective appendices (10, 10′ 22, 22′) with respective bores (11, 11′, 23, 23′). These parts are superposed and are safely secured together with screws (25, 25′) which fasten the outer sliding tubes to the cross member, thus arranging the outer sliding tubes at a predetermined axial distance. The parallelism between the outer sliding tubes is ensured by the abutment of the lower edge (15, 15′) of the bushings of the cross member against a corresponding lower step (9, 9′) of the upper machined portions of the outer sliding tubes, inserted into the bushings.

  • Patent number: 6305489
Abstract: A power steering apparatus senses a fore-and-aft acceleration of a vehicle which is expressed as a value prefixed with a sign, and a rotation speed Ri of an electric motor is reduced to reduce an assist force in accordance with the acceleration if the value of the sensed vehicle acceleration is positive, and increased to increase the assist force in accordance with the acceleration if the value of the sensed vehicle acceleration is negative (FIG. 4). With this control operation, a consistent steering feeling can be provided even at acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 6298931
Abstract: A control system controls a tracked vehicle drive/steering system which has an engine driven hydraulic steering pump which drives a hydraulic steering motor. In one embodiment, the control system operates to gradually reduce the magnitude of the steering pump control signals if the vehicle is stationary, the clutch is engaged and these conditions persist for at least a certain time period, and to further or more rapidly reduce the magnitude if the vehicle seat is not occupied. In an alternate embodiment, the control system operates to limit the magnitude of the steering pump control signals as a function of the acceleration of wheel speed. In another alternate embodiment, the control system operates to quickly reduce the magnitude of the steering pump control signals if the vehicle is stationary, the clutch is engaged and the transmission is commanded to be in a non-neutral gear, between the time the ear is commanded and the vehicle motion begins.

  • Patent number: 6293566
Abstract: A binding strap for use in a soft boot snowboard binding is provided, the binding strap including a flexible, unitary binding member having an ankle section connected to a toe section by a midsection. The binding strap may be configured and dimensioned to preferably provide a rider with easy entry and exit from the strap. In addition, the shape and flexible nature of the binding makes it comfortable to use, while also allowing it to perform well by securely engaging the rider's boot to the snowboard. The unitary construction allows the binding strap to move in an integrated manner, while the surface area of the binding strap reduces pressure points by distributing pressure exerted by the binding over a relatively large surface area of the boot, and hence foot, of the rider.

  • Patent number: 6283237
Abstract: A steering system for turning a machine has a plurality of wheels that include a first and second wheel that share a first axis of rotation. The plurality of wheels also includes at least one tether wheel that has a second axis of rotation and may be pivoted relative to the first and second wheels. The first and second axes of rotation define a turning angle. A plurality of drive units include first and second drive units for independently rotating the first and second wheels respectively at variable speeds. A steering input device produces a steering input signal, and a controller receives the steering input signal and produces drive unit request signals to control the drive units. The drive unit request signals may command a turn by rotating the wheels at different speeds thereby altering the turning angle and turning the machine. In this manner, the present invention may steer the machine without articulation cylinders, a transmission, a drive shaft, or a differential.

  • Patent number: 6279936
Abstract: An anti-rollback assembly adapted or adaptable for use in combination with a wheelchair. The anti-rollback assembly includes a one-way brake assembly automatically immobilizing the wheelchair against rearward movement when the occupant attempts to rise from or sit in a seat member of the wheelchair, yet at the same time does not prevent the wheelchair from moving in a forward direction. Conversely, when the occupant is fully seated in the seal member, the one-way brake assembly is disengaged so that the wheelchair can move freely in forward or rearward directions. The assembly can be retrofitted onto existing wheelchairs, and is adjustable to fit various size wheelchairs.
