  • Patent number: 10370943
Abstract: One example of a wellbore control tool and a method of use is described. A leak is detected in a cased wellbore comprising a multiple telescoping casing sections. A fluid flows in an uphole direction through the cased wellbore. A flow of the fluid in the uphole direction results in a first force in the uphole direction. The leak is in a first telescoping casing section. An open downhole end of a wellbore tool having a weight at least equal to a second force greater than the first force on an uphole end of a second telescoping casing section that is downhole from a location of the leak in the first telescoping casing section is seated. The open downhole end of the wellbore tool provides metal to metal contact against the uphole end of the second telescoping casing section and restricts fluid flow into the leak.

  • Patent number: 10364634
Abstract: A hydraulic jar for delivering impacts downhole. The jarring mechanism includes a cup-type piston that moves through a seal bore. The cup is deformable in response to fluid pressure so that it expands each time it moves through the seal bore to compensate for wear on the lip. Since only minimum interference is required between the piston and seal bore, less material may be used. This reduces the force required to reset the tool, which is particularly advantageous in horizontal wells. The seal bore may be slightly wider at the exit; the cup expands to this exit diameter, ensuring an interference fit as the cup travels back through the smaller diameter entry section. The entry end of the seal bore may include longitudinal grooves. This prevents the piston cup from rupturing by preventing a fluid seal around the lip until the most of cup is inside the seal bore.

  • Patent number: 10352159
Abstract: A system and method for monitoring drilling operations by dividing a flow of fluid into at least one discrete fluid unit, circulating the fluid unit through a wellbore, and comparing a measured change to a property of the fluid unit to a predicted change in the property of the fluid unit. In addition to measuring the change to the property of the fluid unit, the fluid unit may be tracked by iteratively calculating the location of the fluid unit as it passes through the wellbore. Data collected for the fluid unit by a control system may be analyzed and used by the control system or an operator to diagnose problems or improve overall efficiency of drilling operations.

  • Patent number: 10352152
Abstract: An apparatus and method may operate to mount acoustic sensors, azimuthally offset from each other, to the exterior of a casing. After the casing and acoustic sensors are in the borehole, signals are provided to the acoustic sensors to cause the acoustic sensors to emit acoustic signals into the annulus around the casing. The method further includes detecting reflected compression waves, shear waves or a combination or conversion thereof at the acoustic sensors to generate a set of two]way travel times of the acoustic signals. The method can further include generating distance measurements of a distance between corresponding acoustic sensors and points on the borehole wall based on the two]way travel times, to determine a position of the casing within the borehole. The method can further include identifying fluids based on the two]way travel times. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 10337298
Abstract: A liner hanger seals with casing string 8 having mill scale and supports a liner 98 within a well. The liner hanger includes a tubular anchor 48 and a tubular expander 40. The tubular anchor 48 may be positioned in the casing string 8 using an inner mandrel 10. An actuator assembly 6 forcibly moves the tubular expander 40 into the tubular anchor 48, expanding the tubular anchor 48 to grippingly engage the expanded tubular anchor 48 against the casing string 8 and to form a circumferential seal between metal sealing elements 52 on the tubular anchor 48 and the interior wall of the casing string 8. The metal sealing element 52 is oversized to provide rigidity, heat shrunk onto the tubular anchor 48, and abrasively dressed to remove excess material prior to installation of the liner hanger.

  • Patent number: 10337286
Abstract: A tubing drain for service with oil wells, water wells, gas wells and/or thermal wells has a configuration of structural features which allow the drain to be opened and closed without the need to pull the drain to the surface to be serviced. The drain utilizes an inner mandrel having two circumferentially aligned cylindrical apertures which may be selectively aligned with a drain port in an outer shell member as the inner mandrel is rotated within the shell. A first cylindrical aperture contains a ball which, when in alignment with the drain port, is urged against a seat in the drain port by hydraulic pressure. However, when the inner mandrel is rotated the ball is dislodged from the seat and forced back into the first cylindrical aperture. Further rotation of the inner mandrel aligns the second cylindrical aperture with the drain port, allowing the tubing to drain.

  • Patent number: 10309184
Abstract: A retrievable locking ball landing tool of the present disclosure allows for fluid circulation while running in the well. Once a plug (e.g., ball) is pumped downhole, the tool allows pressure isolation to activate hydraulic component(s) of a liner string or the like. Being retrievable, the tool eliminates the need to drill out of aluminum components once the setting operations are complete. The retrievable tool can also be used as a bridge plug to allow for wellbore isolation for a period of time. For example, the tool used as a bridge plug can be used to set a liner assembly and can suspend the well until future stimulation can be completed.

  • Patent number: 10280710
Abstract: An auto-shut-in valve in a chemical injection valve is described for operation at a downhole location in a wellbore. The chemical injection valve includes a closure member that is maintained in an open position by fluid pressure in a chemical supply line such that diminishment of the fluid pressure in the chemical supply line automatically causes the closure member to move to a closed position. A first mating surface on the closure member is exposed to the fluid pressure in the chemical supply line when the closure member is in the open position, and defines a portion of an equivalent differential surface to which the fluid pressure is exposed to maintain the closure member in the open position. The first mating surface is isolated from the fluid pressure in the chemical supply line when the closure member is in the closed position.
