  • Patent number: 11333004
Abstract: A piston initiator is used on an assembly having a milling tool and a whipstock for creating a sidetrack in a wellbore. A piston disposed in an uphole position in a bore of the milling tool seals the bore from communicating with the port. A line from the port can communicate pressure to components on the whipstock for initiating their activation. The piston is movable from the uphole position, but is held by a releasable connection configured to release the piston in response to a predetermined force from fluid flow in a downhole direction against an exposed surface area of the piston. An uphole shoulder in the milling tool prevents movement of the piston in an uphole direction so the piston does not stress the releasable connection in response to reverse fluid flow through the milling tool.

  • Patent number: 11286719
Abstract: In a drilling system, a control system coupled to a drilling rig controls a bottom hole assembly (BHA) to drill a borehole through a geological formation along a drilling path. The control system determines a present position of the BHA and calculates a toolface vector to create a convergence path from the present position of the BHA to a desired target path. The control system also receives geological information and compensates the toolface vector to account for an estimated geologic formation drift. The control system causes at least one control parameter to be modified in order to alter a drilling direction of the BHA based on the calculated toolface vector and transmits the at least one control parameter to the drilling rig to target the BHA in accordance with the calculated toolface vector. The control system iteratively performs this process until convergence with the desired target path is achieved.

  • Patent number: 11274532
Abstract: An artificial lift system for a horizontal well deploys a downhole pump and flexible bladder reservoir chamber to be used with a conventional rod pump. The rod pump is used in the vertical at the top of the curve. The flexible bladder reservoir chamber is connected to the rod pump intake. The downhole pump is set in the producing formation and is connected to the reservoir chamber by tubing. The lift system uses a compressor drive system to operate the downhole pump to move fluids from the producing formation to the reservoir chamber. The reservoir chamber uses the flexible chamber bladder that is filled with well fluids by operation of the downhole pump to provide a continuous supply of well fluids to the rod pump intake. Operation of the rod pump lifts fluids from the flexible chamber bladder without regard to the operation state of the downhole pump.

  • Patent number: 11261698
Abstract: Flow control systems are described for variably resisting flow of a fluid composition dependent on the surface energy of the fluid composition. Surface energy is a measure of the wettability of a surface with a particular the fluid. Surface energy dependent flow resistors of the present disclosure include a support structure extending across and/or filling a control passageway such that the surface area exposed to a fluid may be maximized. The flow control systems described may autonomously distinguish between fluid compositions having high and low proportions of a desired fluid component even when the fluid compositions have substantially equal viscosities. Flow control valves are described which may be employed in downhole production and injection equipment.

  • Patent number: 11255127
Abstract: A drill bit performs pilot rock-breaking using an outer annular drill bit and breaks a central rock pillar using a central drill bit mounted in the middle of the annular drill bit and located inside a drill bit body to induce unloading of a bottom hole stress. A method mixes rock debris produced by rock breaking of the central drill bit as abrasive with the drilling fluid flowing into the entire drill bit as abrasive jet liquid phase to form an abrasive jet. The method includes obtaining an annular borehole by braking, and breaking the rock pillar at the inner side of the annular borehole to induce unloading of the bottom hole stress, mixing the rock debris produced by breaking the rock pillar at the inner side of the annular borehole as abrasive with the drilling fluid entering the drill bit to form an abrasive jet.
