Abstract: A word processor application is provided for creating word processor documents wherein the data and presentation can be separated. Data can be stored in a separate location from the presentation surface of the word processor document. Users of the word processor application can establish links (or bindings) between the contents of the data and the presentation surface. A user can modify contents of a word processor document by directly changing the linked data without having to deal with the complexity of the presentation format, which can be constantly changing. A user can modify content of a word processor document, by editing a data store without any knowledge of the current layout of the presentation surface. A user can modify complex backing data through simple document edits, without exposure to the complexities of the data structure.

Abstract: A computer-based narration assembly system and method provide an environment analogous to in-person sharing of photographs by utilizing spontaneous verbal narration or story-telling, together with manual indications by the story-teller of significant or relevant image portions. The system combines the verbal narration with automatic cinematic display manipulations that relate to the manual indications by the story-teller to form a multimedia production or “movie” from the display images. The cinematic display manipulations may include pans, zooms, fades, etc. that animate the display of the images and transitions between them.

Abstract: A new behavior in a graphical user interface allows the user to open and close enclosures, while dragging an object. When the user pauses, gestures, or rolls over a hot spot on top of an icon or text representing a closed enclosure, a temporary window for the closed enclosure is “sprung open” to allow the user to browse inside the enclosure and possible open another enclosure contained within the temporary window. This process can be carried on throughout a hierarchy of windows as the user browses for a destination window for the drag operation. All of the temporary windows except the destination are closed when the mouse button is released, signaling the end of a drag. The user may close sprung open windows by simply moving the cursor out of the sprung open window, or by making some other gesture.

Abstract: A method for managing speaker notes in a slide presentation is disclosed. A method for creating a plurality of speaker notes files to be used in support of a slide presentation includes: creating a first speaker notes file including a first plurality of speaker notes instances to be used each respectfully in support of one slide among a plurality of slides of the slide presentation; creating a second speaker notes file including a second plurality of speaker notes instances to be used each respectfully in support of one slide among the plurality of slides of the slide presentation, wherein the first and second speaker notes files are grouped in a speaker notes component; and creating links between the slide presentation and the first or second speaker notes file to allow a respective first or second speaker notes instance to be used in support of the one slide.

Abstract: A graphical user interface is disclosed which achieves an easy search for a desired item upon scrolling. Plural first icons representing first items of a high hierarchy are arrayed along a direction of a display screen, and plural second icons representing second items of a low hierarchy which belong to a selected one of the first items are arrayed along an intersecting direction with the selected first item positioned at the intersecting position. The selected noticed icon from among the plural second icons is displayed emphatically at a fixed position on the display screen, and explanation information of the noticed item icon is displayed in the proximity of the display position of the noticed icon. In response to a scrolling instruction, scrolling is executed while explanation information of the second icons other than the noticed item icon is displayed.

Abstract: A method and system for indicating availability of a contact is provided. The presence system displays to the user an indication of the presence state in association with the contact. The presence system provides an indication of the availability associated with the presence state of the contact when the user indicates to view such information. When the contact has high availability, the presence system displays an increasing animation. When the contact has low availability, the presence system displays a decreasing animation.

Abstract: A method and computer-readable medium are provided for laying out footnotes. Each footnote includes a footnote reference and corresponding footnote text. According to the method, an attempt is first made to lay out one or more footnotes such that each of the references and the corresponding text all fit completely within one page. If such a layout cannot be made, an attempt is may to lay out each of the footnotes such that all of the reference marks fit on the page and all but one of the corresponding note text fits completely on the page. If such a layout cannot be made, an emergency layout may be generated.

Abstract: Once bookmark registration is instructed by user operation while any detailed setting window is being displayed on a background screen on a display of a digital mixer, only the currently-displayed detailed setting window is bookmark-registered. Thus, once bookmark call operation is performed while a desired background screen is being displayed, the currently-displayed background screen is maintained as-is, and the called detailed setting window is displayed on the background screen. Further, bookmark registration can be made in association with a mixer channel, and, in response to bookmark call operation, parameters of the associated channel can be called and displayed.

Abstract: Rendering GUI widgets with generic look and feel by receiving in a display device a master definition of a graphics display, the master definition including at least one graphics definition element, the graphics definition element including a reference to a protowidget and one or more instance parameter values characterizing an instance of the protowidget, the protowidget includes a definition of a generic GUI object, including generic display values affecting overall look and feel of the graphics display, and rendering at least one instance of the protowidget to a graphics display in dependence upon the generic display values and the instance parameter values.

Abstract: Improved graphical user interfaces suitable for restricting the availability of media items and/or podcasts are also disclosed. The graphical user interfaces are particularly useful for a system that provides purchase and distribution of media in a client-server environment.

Abstract: When a user clicks a Back button or a Forward button while reviewing an application page in a browser, the client performs an action in response which is specified by a server. The Back and Forward buttons may be controlled by the server and may be used to provide real undo and redo functionality for stateful server applications. The functionality may be implemented using invisible pages loaded in the browser. If it is determined that undo or redo cannot be performed, the client may continue to display the application page, optionally with a message to the user.

Abstract: Control limit values may be related to noncomplying points by receiving a user selection indicating one or more datapoints to be used in a control limit operation, calculating control limit values based on the datapoints, wherein the control limit values indicate one or more noncomplying points that are not within an expected range, generating a display relating the control limit values to the noncomplying points, and identifying the noncomplying points in the generated display.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for a Web browser to display an alternate home page when a default home page is not presently accessible are provided. The method and apparatus ensures that the default home page is presently accessible before the browser contacts the computer system hosting the home page, when the web browser is first activated. If the default home page is accessible, it is accessed and displayed. If not, an alternate home page is accessed and displayed. In one embodiment of the invention, the invention uses a scheduler (i.e., time and day that the home page may be accessible) to determine whether the home page is presently accessible. In another embodiment, the invention uses IP addresses to determine whether the host computer and the computer used by the user are within the same network. If the two computers are within the same network, then the home page is determined to be presently accessible; otherwise, it is determined to be presently inaccessible.

Abstract: A system and method is disclosed that provides for displaying on the screen of a handheld electronic device, an extended menu or a short menu, which is a subset of the corresponding extended menu. The system and method include an application displayed on a screen. If the application is currently running, and no menu is displayed, the user may initiate an ambiguous request. Various short menus, including those with solely one menu item, are provided with their respective menu items being dependent and adjustable based upon the position of a cursor on the display page, the currently opened application, and/or the previous selections. Further, a selection from the short menu is capable of displaying the extended menu corresponding thereto.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and articles of manufacture for managing global annotations made for data elements that may be instantiated (e.g., displayed) by a variety of different type applications are provided. By anchoring the global annotations to the data element, rather than the particular data source containing the data element at the time the data element was annotated, the annotation may be retrieved from any application that instantiates or displays it.

Abstract: An input apparatus enables a user to input information selected by the user as the user intends by using a comparatively small input surface area. The input apparatus comprises an indicating position detecting part detecting an indicating position, a candidate input information replacing part replacing a candidate of the input information based on a shift of the indicating position, and an input information determining part determining the input information from the candidate of the input information.

Abstract: Disclosed is an information processing apparatus for controlling an application object moving autonomously in shared virtual space in which avatars representing users of other information processing apparatuses are active. The apparatus comprises a distribution examining element for examining distribution of the active avatars in the shared virtual space, a coordinate controlling element for controlling coordinates of the application object in accordance with results of the examination by the distribution examining element and a display controlling element for controlling display of information by the application object controlled in coordinates by the coordinate controlling element.

Abstract: A graphical user interface (GUI) for presenting representations of selected objects in a computer system. The GUI presents an object selected from a collection of objects using a selected visual representation selected from at least first and second visual representations to be initiated using different initiation techniques. A first input control causes the selected object to be presented using another visual representation instead of the selected visual representation. A second input control causes another object to be presented instead of the selected object using any visual configuration that is currently used in presenting the selected object. The first and second input controls may be located in an object header area that remains essentially unchanged when changing between the at least first and second visual representations.

Abstract: A method and apparatus used for evaluating usability of displayed material having a plurality of portions by displaying a set of the plurality of portions in an unintelligible format; making intelligible each of the set of the plurality of portions as each is indicated by actions of a user; determining the sequence of the indicated portions; and recording a selection of a subset of the set of the plurality of portions and the determined sequence.

Abstract: A user interface allows centralized creation and management control for a business having one or more web site storefronts engaged in commerce through the Internet. The interface is for use within a web browser and includes a first display area and a second display area. The first display area is for presenting access to two or more control panels to create, manage (or maintain) and operate a web site for the small business engaged in commerce of at least one of goods or services. The second display area is visually distinguished from and concurrently displayed with the first display area, and provides information associated with the commerce involving the web site.
