  • Patent number: 7214273
Abstract: A nitrogen injection assembly for use in coloring and curing optical fibers is disclosed. The nitrogen injection assembly includes a cover section and a distribution seal. An optical fiber coated with ink passes from a coating die to a curing chamber via a passageway defined by the cover section and the distribution seal. The distribution seal injects nitrogen into the passageway to keep the coated fiber and the curing chamber substantially free of oxygen. With the distribution seal positioned closer to the curing chamber than the cover section, the apparatus minimizes the risk of leaks in the passageway and the number of required seals.

  • Patent number: 7175711
Abstract: A coating device (10) for coating a metal strip (12) in a metal melt (14) includes a shaft (16,18) that is rotatable in the metal melt (14) for guiding the metal strip (12), and a slide bearing (261, 262) for supporting the shaft (16,18). The slide bearing (261, 262) is formed by a bearing housing (32) and a bearing bushing (34) that has several pairs (361–364) of bearing surfaces and is configured so as to be circumferentially closed. The bearing bushing (34) is adapted to be set in selected rotational positions in circumferential direction in the bearing housing (32). A releasable bearing bushing fixing element (40) locks the bushing in each of the selected rotational positions with respect to the bearing housing (32). Thereby, a worn pair (361–364) of bearing surfaces can be simply replaced by a non-worn pair (361–364) of bearing surfaces by a rotation of the bearing bushing.

  • Patent number: 7175710
Abstract: A web to be coated travels over a deflecting roll and underneath a slot nozzle from which a curtain of a coating material falls. A suction box open toward the roll and web has upstream and downstream ends and extends full axial length of the roll. An upstream seal on the upstream side of the box is juxtaposed with the web, extends the full axial length of the roll, and has upstream and downstream edges extending transverse to the web-travel direction. A similar downstream seal is provided on the downstream side of the box juxtaposed with the web. The downstream-seal downstream edge is spaced upstream in the direction from where the curtain falls on the web. Air is withdrawn from the box between the seals to suctionally strip a boundary layer of air from the web between the seals.

  • Patent number: 7169229
Abstract: The invention pertains to a coating apparatus and method in which most of the relative movement between a dispensing head and the substrate to be coated is provided by the coating head. The moving head configuration reduces the system footprint and diminishes leveling problems. A powered shuttle mechanism carries a dispensing head above a substrate to be coated while riding on a bearing located underneath the chuck holding the substrate thereby providing rigidity and reducing the system footprint. Chuck support is designed to accommodate anticipated vertical sag in the dispensing head by supporting the chuck at points along its periphery thereby permitting the chuck to sag in conjunction with the dispensing head. The shuttle mechanism is equipped with means for automatically adjusting the height of the dispensing head with respect to substrate to compensate for substrate placement error, substrate dimensional variation, and mechanical drift in the mechanical machine parts.

  • Patent number: 7160390
Abstract: During displacement relative to a substrate 1, a coating die head emits coating liquid out of a slot 12a to a surface of the substrate. The coating die head includes a lip 12b having a lip surface 12b and a side having a side surface 12c. A contact angle of the surface 12c with respect to the coating liquid is greater than a contact angle of the surface 12b with respect to the coating liquid. This configuration enhances stabilization of bead of the coating liquid during application process of the coating liquid, preventing stripes and steps from appearing in the coating layer. This coating die head makes it possible to carry out high precision coating required for fabrication of color filters for liquid crystal displays.

  • Patent number: 7156920
Abstract: The coating device (10) for coating a metal band or strip (12, 12?) in a melted metal mass (14 ) comprises a shaft (16, 18) rotatably supported in the melted metal mass (14) by a slide bearing (261, 262) is formed by a bearing housing (32) and an open bearing shell (34) held therein, with two bearing surfaces (36) . Between the two bearing surfaces (36), the bearing shell (34) comprises a deformation zone (40) with a deformation element (44) . With high radial forces of the shaft occurring, the two bearing shell halves (381, 382) are slightly spread. The flexible deformation zone ensures that the two bearing shell halves remain interconnected and resist breaking in this area.

  • Patent number: 7144459
Abstract: A machine for processing a flat workpiece or wafer has a head, which spins the wafer between upper and lower weirs in a base. The head is spaced apart from the base by an air gap. A vacuum source attached to an exhaust opening in the base draw air through the air gap, to reduce or eliminate movement of process chemicals into the head. Corrosion of head components by process chemicals is reduced. The disadvantages of having a mechanical seal between the base and the head are also eliminated.
