  • Patent number: 5292468
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a hot-melt, pressure-sensitive adhesive substance with surfces that are not sticky or self-adhesive, which includes casting such a substance in a mold that has been previously coated with a protective web created by spinning a hot-melt, non-pressure-sensitive adhesive and of protecting the surface of the casting with a similar web. For this purpose, fiberization nozzles are advantageously employed. These protective webs are very resistant and, since they participate in the solidity of the block, they make possible the flexible packaging of adhesives with a low mass mechanical strength.

  • Patent number: 5277860
Abstract: A process for making an all-plastic rod end to enable an articulated linking of two members. The process includes providing first and second split bearing raceway members each of which defines one-half of an annular bearing raceway and a stem having an open ended semi-cylindrical recess. A spherical ball dimensioned to fit in the annular bearing raceway also is provided. The spherical ball is placed into the first split bearing raceway member, and the second split bearing raceway member is placed over the first split bearing raceway member to define a complete annular bearing raceway that encases the ball. The process continues by molding a plastic housing around the split bearing raceway members but spaced from the spherical ball to enable free movement of the spherical ball therein.

  • Patent number: 5275675
Abstract: A method for producing intaglio designs in cast acrylic material, wherein a moulding tool hotter than 600.degree. C. is applied to a surface contact area of an acrylic surface in which the intaglio copy of the moulding tool is to be formed, and the moulding tool is withdrawn from the surface contact area before the temperature of the tool or the acrylic material of said area falls below that at which methyl methacrylate vapor ceases to be produced by the depolymerization of the acrylic material. The preferred withdrawal temperature is above 250.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 5275767
Abstract: A container is manufactured by placing a length of extruded thermoplastic tubing over a mandrel so that an end of the tubing extends beyond the mandrel to form an annular rim and placing a thermoplastic slug on the mandrel within the rim. An ultrasonic resonating horn is provided having a cavity adapted to receive the rim. The horn cavity has a base and an annular tapered portion formed around the base and engageable with the rim. The tubing and the resonating horn are pressed together with a relatively moderate force so that the tapered portion of the horn cavity engages the rim of the tubing and softens and folds it inwardly in such a manner that it is in alignment with the slug, the mandrel, and the base of the cavity. The mandrel and the resonating horn are then brought together with a relatively large force to squeeze the folded rim and the slug tightly together between the mandrel and the base of the cavity.

  • Patent number: 5273704
Abstract: A method of shaping an extruded section of polymer directly onto the surface edges of a glazing or glass plate. In one embodiment, a rotatable plate member having a plurality of calibrated die cross sections is placed in front of the exit orifice of an extrusion die. The plate member is rotated to obtain, an extruded section having different profile cross sections and the flow rate of the polymer through the die is controlled in response to the position of the plate member so that the amount of polymer being fed corresponds to the respective profile section being extruded. In another embodiment, an obturating slide member is placed in front of an extrusion die exit orifice sized to correspond to the largest desired profile cross section. To produce abrupt changes in profile cross section, the slide is moved quickly at predetermined locations along the path of the extrusion die. To produce a continuous transition between profile sections, the slide is moved slowly during extrusion.

  • Patent number: 5266258
Abstract: Method of installing an insert in a plastics body so as to provide a screw thread therein, the insert being of metal and formed with the screw thread, and in which the hole in the plastic which receives the insert is sealed, by providing the insert with an `O` ring located in an external peripheral groove and projecting therefrom, the size and shape of the insert and hole being related and selected so that in axial displacement of the insert into the preformed hole accompanied by softening of the plastic caused by the fastener being preheated or by vibrations applied to the plastic via the fastener as it is inserted, the `O` ring only comes into contact with unsoftened plastic and only comes into contact with plastic towards the end of the axial installation movement. This ensures a good seal between the `O` ring and the plastic.

  • Patent number: 5266245
Abstract: Methods for applying coverings to surfaces by casting at least a portion of the covering in a mould from a solidifiable liquid mix. The mould may be applied directly to the surface or to an already cast layer of the covering. In another embodiment an outer portion of the covering is cast in a mould and is affixed to the surface, or to an already cast layer of the covering, so as to define a void between the outer portion and the surface or already cast layer. The void is filled with solidifiable liquid mix.

  • Patent number: 5234624
Abstract: Method of producing a data processing care by thermo-moulding a mixture of pulverulent polycarbonate with lamp-black at a proportion of 8 ppm of lamp-black with respect to the basic thermo-hardenable material. The inner face of the wall of the mould which gives rise to the front face of the card has a checkered pattern, the distance between the recesses, respectively the protrusions, of the checkered pattern being a multiple of the wave length of the laser ray used for applying on the card the contrasted signs. A laser tube piloted by a piloting unit including a program containing the indications which are to appear on the card, is used for directing a laser radiation onto the card. The infrared rays are absorbed by the lamp-black contained in the mass of the material of the card which is heated, thereby producing a change of color resulting in appearance of signs such as a signature and a photograph on the front face of the card.

  • Patent number: 5230851
Abstract: A process for making a refastenable mechanical fastening system, made of free formed prongs joined to a substrate. The prongs taper and are nonperpendicularly oriented relative to the plane of the substrate. Each prong has an engaging means projecting laterally from the periphery of the prong. The free formed prongs are manufactured by the process of depositing liquid material onto a moving substrate, stretching the liquid material in a direction parallel to the plane of the substrate and severing the stretched material to form the distal end and engaging means of the prong. The advantageous usage of the fastening system in an article of manufacture, such as a disposable absorbent garment, specifically a diaper.

  • Patent number: 5227115
Abstract: A process for aligning a layer of a liquid-crystalline, polymeric material in which a gas or liquid stream is passed over the liquid-crystalline, polymeric material, preferably for aligning main-chain polymers which have a nematic phase by passing a hot stream of air onto the material. Electrooptical displays which contain an alignment layer of this type have high contrast. The alignment layers have advantages over conventional rubbed alignment layers since, for example, no electrostatic charging takes place.

  • Patent number: 5219499
Abstract: A method of manufacturing rotors having helical lands and intermediate grooves wherein a multi-layer rotor body (2) is moulded or otherwise formed on a shaft (1) to only a small degree of accuracy, whereafter an outer layer (3) of polymer-based material is moulded on the rotor body to a high degree of accuracy. For the purpose of eliminating shrinkage-induced distortion of the lands of the rotor body (2) subsequent to applying the outer layer, the rotor body is produced in a multiple of layers (21, 22), by casting or like moulding processes, with each of the body layers having a thickness which is greater than that of the high accuracy outer layer (3).
