Abstract: An implant composed substantially of cortical bone is provided for use in cervical Smith-Robinson vertebral fusion procedures. The implant is derived from allograft or autograft cortical bone sources, is machined to form a symmetrically or asymmetrically shaped (e.g. a substantially āDā-shaped) implant having a canal running therethrough according to methods of this invention, and inserted into the space between adjacent cervical vertebrae to provide support and induce fusion of the adjacent vertebrae. Osteogenic, osteoinductive or osteoconductive materials may be packed into the canal of the implant to expedite vertebral fusion and to allow autologous bony ingrowth.

Abstract: An intervertebral nucleus prosthesis characterized in that it consists of at least one, in particular, spherical body movable in two directions of a plane and made of a rigid, non-oxidizing, biocompatible material with a diameter adapted to the biological nucleus, the spherical body being mounted non-displaceably but freely rotatably about its center in a cage and protruding at both opposite sides of said cage in the form of a spherical caps. Also proposed is a method for implanting such a prosthesis.
Abstract: A very small diameter intravascular stent device which may be used to occlude or partially occlude an aneurysm in the human brain which is comprised of a thin-walled skeletal cylindrical tube formed of undulating or sinusoidal elements which, when compressed, nest tightly with each other.
Abstract: An arthroeresis-prosthesis (endorthosis) system comprising a sinus tarsi implant for the purpose of blocking abnormal motion between the talus and calcaneus while allowing normal motion and alignment. In a preferred embodiment, the prosthetic device is composed of a non-metallic, specialized medical grade polymer (polyetheretherketone-PEEK) that is a combination of a frustum of a right cine and an axially extending cylinder that is cannulated and partially structured on the exterior surface.
Abstract: An endovascular graft having one or more sensors attached to its internal and external surface, one or more power sources attached to its external surface and one or more transmitters attached to its external surface, the sensors capable of measuring pertinent parameters and each transmitter capable of transmitting signals containing pertinent parameters to one or more receiving devices located outside the patient's body. The sensors may measure pressure, temperature, blood flow, electrical potential, or any combination thereof. The sensors may be attached at specific locations on the graft material, thereby providing pertinent parameters from critical points inside the vasculature, or may be attached to form an array of sensors over the internal and external surface of the graft material, thereby providing a complete profile of pertinent parameters throughout the vasculature covered by the endovascular graft.
Abstract: An expandable stent is fabricated from a plurality of circumferential rings, each pair of adjacent circumferential rings being interconnected by a multiplicity of links, each link contacting a portion of a strut in one ring along one longitudinal axis and a portion a strut in a directly adjacent ring along a different longitudinal axis. Each link is circumferentially S-shaped and adjacent links are mirror images of each other. The resulting stent is both flexible and strong when expanded thereby providing good scaffolding. In one embodiment, the strut material is fabricated of shape memory alloy such that when the strut is compressed so as to be insertable into a vessel, the strut will automatically expand to its previous dimension upon rising to the temperature of the vessel in which it is placed, thereby to expand and hold open the vessel without need for a balloon catheter.
Abstract: A subcutaneous, intramuscular bearing (1) for a rigid transcutaneous implant (2) is provided, for anchoring intracorporally in a bone stump and having an intermediate piece (3) between the implant (2) and an extracorporal coupling for coupling on the implant. A rigid bushing (5) is tightly connected to the intermediate piece (3), such that between the wall of the bushing (5) and the intermediate piece (3) an annular space (6) is formed, which is closed in the intracorporal direction, for receiving and setting the extracorporal coupling. The outer wall of the bushing (5) has an open-meshed, three-dimensional lattice structure (8) and a lattice-free distal region having a width B. A spring ring (9) is set in the annular space (6) from the distal end, moved with a telescoping motion, and locked under exertion of its spring effect.
Abstract: A method for replacing at least a portion of an intervertebral disc in a spinal column includes: removing the portion of the intervertebral disc from the spinal column; and inserting an apparatus for replacing the portion of the intervertebral disc into an intervertebral disc space defined substantially between adjacent vertebral bones of the spinal column, and positioning the apparatus between the vertebral bones, wherein the apparatus is operable to permit the adjacent vertebral bones to articulate relative to one another about at least one of: (i) a first center of rotation for at least one of flexion and extension that is located outside the intervertebral disc space, and (ii) a second center of rotation for lateral bending that is located outside the intervertebral disc space.

Abstract: A prosthetic joint is disclosed that includes a plurality of elements, which may be provided in kit form, that can be assembled to form either a single-axis joint or a double-axis joint depending on whether an adaptor is used to join first and second elements of the joint.
Abstract: A method for replacing at least a portion of an intervertebral disc in a spinal column includes removing the portion of the intervertebral disc from the spinal column and inserting an apparatus for replacing the portion of the intervertebral disc. The apparatus is operable to permit respective vertebral bones of the spinal column between which the apparatus is positioned to articulate in flexion and extension in an anterior-posterior plane of the spinal column, lateral bending in a lateral plane of the spinal column, and axial rotation through a range of angles without permitting the vertebral bones to substantially move in directions directed away from one another along a longitudinal axis of the spinal column.

Abstract: A multiple-sided medical device comprises a closed frame of a single piece of wire or other resilient material and having a series of bends and interconnecting sides. The device has both a flat configuration and a second, folded configuration that comprises a self-expanding stent. The stent is pushed from a delivery catheter into the lumen of a duct or vessel. One or more barbs are attached to the frame of the device for anchoring or to connect additional frames. A covering of fabric or other flexible material such as DACRON, PTFE, or collagen, is sutured or attached to the frame to form an occlusion device, a stent graft, or an artificial valve such as for correcting incompetent veins in the lower legs and feet. A partial, triangular-shaped covering over the lumen of the device allows the valve to open with normal blood flow and close to retrograde flow.
