Abstract: In many situations, the objective of data entry is to obtain a complex or structured value. This has traditionally been accomplished by providing a discrete entry field for each element of data entry. By extending the notion of an entry filter, and introducing the notion of a discrete editable element within an entry field, it is possible to apply a structure to that entry field. A management component enables one or more entry filters to be associated in turn with each editable element, and ensures that the entry filters are applied correctly to the appropriate elements.

Abstract: Automatically displaying updated and relevant content on the display of a mobile computing device. In response to receiving a registration that includes a request for particular dynamic content, a subscription service creates a template file. The template file includes static content, references to dynamic content, and corresponding layout information. The template file is transferred to and stored on a mobile computing device. When dynamic content is updated the dynamic content is pushed to the mobile computing device via a push gateway. Dynamic content may be included in an service indication message that is pushed to the mobile computing device via a wireless protocol. Dynamic content may be stored in an update store included in the mobile computing device. At an appropriate time computer-executable instructions may be executed that merge content from the update store into the template file for display on a display device.

Abstract: A computer implemented method that allows a user to select one or more of the documents that are listed in a summary view of documents and creates a list of the selected documents. Advantageously, for each selected document, the list includes document summary data pertaining to the selected document and a hyperlink to the selected document.

Abstract: A method, computer program product, electronic document product, and data processing system for rendering web pages containing dynamic data is disclosed. A rendering program executes periodically to render web documents from source documents, base strings for various visual features, database information, and descriptive text. Special command strings located within a source document direct the rendering program to insert information for a database or to insert descriptive text. The format for the inserted data is determined according to a base string for the particular feature(s) of the document being inserted. The resulting rendered document is stored on the web server for quick retrieval with little or no additional document processing.

Abstract: A method of synchronizing an audio and visual presentation in a multi-modal browser. A form having at least one field requiring user supplied information is provided to a multi-modal browser. Blank fields within the form are filled in by user who provides either verbal or tactile interaction, or a combination of verbal and tactile interaction. The browser moves to the next field requiring user provided input. Finally, the form exits after the user has supplied input for all required fields.

Abstract: A live event may be broadcasted by producing a computer coded description of the sub-events that constitute the event. The coded description is stored in a centralized computer data base and the information thus stored is accessible by a viewer's computer. That viewer computer then produces a computer simulation of the live event using the coded description.

Abstract: Transmitting apparatuses, transmitting methods, receiving apparatuses, receiving methods, and transmitting and receiving systems for transmitting and receiving a hierarchical structure of a directory for hierarchically managing locations of contents data is disclosed. The apparatuses, methods and systems manage a hierarchical structure of a directory composed of a container entry and a leaf entry. The container entry contains information of the lower hierarchical level thereof, a leaf entry being located directly below a container entry. The leaf entry does not contain information of the lower hierarchical level thereof.

Abstract: To provide a predetermined user with a privilege for a delegated application processing without providing the user with the application requester's log-in password. The application requester specifies a form class for identifying a form that requests a delegated application, both starting and ending dates for identifying a term of the requested delegated application together with a proxy applicant user ID that specifies a proxy applicant requested for the delegated application, then registers those items in the electronic form system. The electronic form system then registers those items in a proxy applicant definition table together with the application requester user II). The proxy applicant can thus enter the form submission mode of the application requester. In the form submission mode of the application requester, forms that can be submitted by the proxy applicant are selected according to the information of the form class, the starting date, the ending date, etc.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer instructions in a data processing system for generating links. The present invention provides a mechanism for constructing a link in a manner that removes the need to rely on hard-coded strings. Generation of a page containing a link to a target is detected. A link is generated using parameters associated with the target.

Abstract: Electronic mail software includes a main email component and a number installable components. The installable components include authoring/reading components for creating/reading different kinds of documents and mailbox components for listing different kinds of messages or for listing messages in different styles. The main email component provides an underlying graphical user interface for functions directly associated with the storage and transfer of electronic mail messages, and also handles all data bundling and unbundling required to transform a message created by an authoring component into a MIME compliant message. The authoring/reading components act like applications embedded within the email program and allow specific types of documents such as spreadsheets, graphics, databases, etc. to be created from within the email program and emailed directly.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for adjusting font size in an electronic program guide display are provided. A multiple channel broadcasting system generates an electronic program guide identifying channels and corresponding programs in a broadcasting system. The broadcast system determines a number of characters to be displayed in an area of an electronic program guide. The broadcast system determines a number of display pixels available for display of the characters. The broadcast system adjusts the font size of the characters to display the number of characters within the number of pixels available.

Abstract: An editing system has a video store for storing a video sequence and a text store for storing a sequence of text associated with the video sequence. Displays and are provided for displaying the video and the text on the text display. The current text position is indicated by a cursor 10 or by another marker. The frames of the video sequence have time codes associated therewith. Corresponding time codes are associated with the text using the time codes and the rate n of reading words:— The current position in the text is controllable in dependence on the time code of the video frames; and the video frame currently displayed is controllable in dependence upon the current position in the text.

Abstract: An apparatus, program product, and method support the annotation of a hypertext document with one or more comments to supply additional information to a user about that document and/or about other documents linked to that document. With the latter type of comments, such comments are displayed to a user prior to the user attempting to retrieve any hypertext document associated with such comments, so that the user can make a more informed decision prior to retrieving the hypertext document. Thus, for example, if a comment for a given hypertext document indicates that the document would not be particularly useful, the user may decide to not retrieve the document, and thus save the time otherwise associated with retrieving and viewing the document.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, article of manufacture, and memory for programmatically switching arbitrary HTML pages is disclosed. The method includes the steps of receiving control information in an application server from a client computer, and executing a script in the application server to generate a map relating HTML files with commands to show pages related to the HTML files. When a control event is received from the client computer, the mapping provides a basis for commanding the client computer's browser to switch to a second HTML page. In one embodiment, the invention also includes a program storage device, tangibly embodying instructions for performing the above method steps. The invention also includes an apparatus for remotely scripting local objects.

Abstract: In a computer system, a method of forming a hyperlinked index of computer-readable pages of information, having steps of: accessing a table of stored table entries, each table entry having a long-name field for storing a long name of a first item, a short-name field for storing a short name of the first item and a related-items field for storing a name identifying a second item related to the first item; and for each accessed table entry, forming a main portion of an index entry having an anchor tag displaying the text appearing in said long-name field, and forming an associated portion of the index entry having an anchor tag displaying the text appearing in the short-name field of the table entry of the second item referred to in the related-items field.

Abstract: A sequence of video frames is assembled from video clips. The frames have time codes associated therewith. It is desired to match sections of the text (T1, T2) to corresponding sections (V1, V2) of the video sequence. Time codes (TCx, TCx+1) corresponding to the time codes of the video frames are entered into the text. A rate n of reading the words of the text is defined. The extent W of the text which matches an associated section of the video is calculated as W=(TCx+1−Tcx).n. On a text display, the extent W of the text which matches the video section is indicated by highlighting or in other ways. More text than matches a video section may be provided. The excess text or overflow text is distinguished on the display by e.g. color from the active text which matches the video section.
