  • Patent number: 7089914
Abstract: A method for operating an internal combustion engine, in particular of a motor vehicle including at least one fuel pump delivers the fuel from a fuel tank into a fuel line. The pressure of the fuel, at least in a region of the fuel line, is increased as a function of an operating state. In order to assure a reliable starting of the engine, the pressure of the fuel, at least In the above-mentioned region of the fuel line is at least intermittently increased when the engine is not running.

  • Patent number: 5590631
Abstract: An accumulator for a no-return fuel system for a vehicle engine with fuel injectors. The accumulator has a housing with a flexible diaphragm between first and second chambers and a spring in one chamber yieldably closing the diaphragm to reduce the volume of the other chamber. One chamber has a fuel inlet that allows fuel into the chamber which accommodates expansion of the fuel by increasing the volume of the chamber against the bias of the spring. Preferably, the diaphragm has an over-pressure valve which opens when the system has reached its maximum over-pressure to allow the fuel to flow from one chamber to the other chamber in bypass relation to the injectors. The other chamber has an outlet communicating directly with the fuel tank.

  • Patent number: 5467754
Abstract: A method of reducing undesired premixed burning in an internal combustion engine includes lifting an injector needle of a fuel injector a constant low-lift increment from a valve seat of a valve covers orifice (VCO) nozzle having an injection hole opening into the valve seat, and preventing lifting of the needle beyond the low-lift increment for a sufficient interval of time to inject a relatively small initial fuel charge into the engine from the VCO nozzle, the injection producing a highly atomized, wide-angle spray plume with relatively low penetration. The interval terminates when lifting forces imposed on the needle overcome holding forces imposed on the needle by a stop plate which has opposed first and second surfaces exposed to an ambient fluid pressure and to a fluid vapor pressure, respectively. A subsequent step includes lifting the needle to a higher lift position to inject a main fuel charge into the engine, the main fuel charge being injected as a relatively narrow jet having high penetration.

  • Patent number: 5329905
Abstract: A fuel injection type internal combustion engine includes a cylinder head which is provided with a pair of intake valve bores facing a combustion chamber, a single intake passage, and a pair of intake ports between which a partition wall is interposed and which connect the intake passage and the intake valve bores to each other, and a fuel injection valve with a fuel ejection port disposed to be directed from the single intake passage toward the intake valve bores. Air assist ejection ports are disposed near the fuel ejection port for finely atomizing the fuel and are disposed at opposite sides of the fuel ejection port on a plane substantially including the fuel ejection port and that end edge of the partition wall which is closer to the intake passage, so that the air assist injection directions intersect each other and the fuel jet. This ensures that the fuel jet is narrowed in width at a portion corresponding to the partition wall by air flows from opposite sides, so that the entire fuel jet is flattened.

  • Patent number: 4149510
Abstract: A recoil type starter device for an internal combustion engine is provided which includes a starting pulley fixed at one end of the engine crank shaft and having a plurality of openings in its circumferential side surface; and a rotatable rope pulley confronting the starting pulley and mounted on a separate fixed shaft, said rope pulley having a pawl to engage any of the openings of the starting pulley to transmit rotational force of the rope pulley to the starting pulley at the start of the engine, a spiral spring to take up the starting rope around the periphery of the rope pulley after start of the engine, a disc fixedly mounted on the shaft of the rope pulley, and a U-shaped wire spring, one end of which is connected to a spring fitting part on the pawl, and the other end of which is frictionally contacted around the circumference of the stationary disc.
