Patent number: 7314372Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for changing the form of the jaw and facial bones of an adult patient that did not develop fully during childhood. The method utilizes a device having a plate body with an expansion screw device that fits within the mouth of the patient, flap springs that project from the plate body and an overlay extending from the plate body. The device is placed within the mouth of the patient so that the overlay is in a position between at least two opposing teeth. In this position the flap springs press against selected teeth that are out of alignment in order to urge those teeth back into place. This force on the teeth causes the jawbone to expand to accept the teeth in their proper position(s). Also, the device is arranged such that the opposing teeth contact the overlay during swallowing, which causes the patient's facial muscles to intermittently pull on the facial bones.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2004Date of Patent: January 1, 2008Assignee: Orthovisage, Inc.Inventors: Theodore Belfor, Gurdev Dave Singh

Patent number: 7309232Abstract: The invention provides methods, apparatus and kits for regenerating dental tissue in vivo that are useful for treating a variety of dental conditions, exemplified by treatment of caries. The invention uses tissue scaffold wafers, preferably made of PGA, PLLA, PDLLA or PLGA dimensioned to fit into a hole of corresponding sized drilled into the tooth of subject to expose dental pulp in vivo. In certain embodiments the tissue scaffold wafer further comprises calcium phosphate and fluoride. The tissue scaffold wafer may be secured into the hole with a hydrogel, a cement or other suitable material. Either the wafer or the hydrogel or both contain a morphogenic agent, such as a member encoded by the TGF-? supergene family, that promotes regeneration and differentiation of healthy dental tissue in vivo, which in turn leads to remineralization of dentin and enamel. The tissue scaffold may further include an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory agent.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2003Date of Patent: December 18, 2007Assignee: Dentigenix Inc.Inventors: Bruce Rutherford, Christopher Somogyi, Clinton White, Erick Rabins

Patent number: 7291011Abstract: A system automatically determines positions of orthodontic objects, such as teeth and/or orthodontic appliances, along an archwire within a three-dimensional (3D) environment based on a proposed orthodontic prescription. The resulting placement of the orthodontic objects in the dentition predicts a final occlusion that may result from the proposed orthodontic prescription. An orthodontic practitioner may interact with the system to enter a proposed orthodontic prescription, or the system may choose the proposed orthodontic prescription from a number of standardized prescriptions stored in a database. The system may also display a digital representation of the orthodontic objects at the determined positions. The practitioner may modify the proposed prescription and view the resulting placement of the orthodontic objects until a desired result is obtained.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2004Date of Patent: November 6, 2007Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventors: Nicholas A. Patent number: 7284983Abstract: A matrix band retainer for dental restoration has a unitary member of a stiff planar spring material. The unitary member has an open ring substantially in a first plane, with the plane of the material of the ring perpendicular to the first plane. A tine at each end of the open ring extends substantially normal to the plane of the ring. Each tine has a first planar portion extending from the ring and a second planar portion extending from the first planar portion. The second planar portion is at an angle to the first planar portion and adjoins the first planar portion to define a ridge. The ridges of each tine face each other across a gap. Each tine may be bifurcated at the end distal from the ring so that the distal portion of each of the first planar portion and the second planar portion are divided by a notch. A dental wedge can be inserted through the notch with the matrix band retainer in place.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2004Date of Patent: October 23, 2007Assignee: Tri-Dent Innovations LimitedInventor: Simon Paul McDonald
