  • Patent number: 4902442
Abstract: A prereaction mixture which is useful in the preparation of porous silica compositions with uniform pore sizes. The porous silica composition comprises a substituted nitrogen-containing siliconate, a colloidal silica and a soluble alkali silicate. By the addition of the substituted nitrogen containing siliconate to either the colloidal silica or soluble silicate, or by combining all three ingredients, a stable solution results, thereby avoiding the premature polymerization of the colloidal silica upon the addition of the soluble silicate. The soluble alkali silicate can have a metal cation which is selected from the group consisting of potassium and sodium.

  • Patent number: 4902108
Abstract: Single-compartment, self-erasing, solution-phase electrochromic devices, solutions of electrochromic compounds for use as media of variable transmittance in such devices, and electrochromic compounds for such solutions are provided. The devices of the invention are surprisingly stable to cycling between light and dark states, have continuously variable transmittance to light as a function of electrical potential applied across the solution in a device, and have transmittance that can be varied over more than a factor of 10, from clear to dark or from dark to clear, in several seconds. Thus, the devices are especially suitable as variable transmittance components of variable transmission light filters, including windows, and variable reflectance mirrors, including anti-glare rearview mirrors in automobiles.

  • Patent number: 4895670
Abstract: A new alkaline absorbent solution containing a severely-hindered amine and a severely-hindered aminoacid is provided. A process for the removal of H.sub.2 S from fluid mixtures using this absorbent solution to produce a very low level of H.sub.2 S in the treated fluid is also provided. The process is also suitable for the selective removal of H.sub.2 S from fluid mixtures comprising H.sub.2 S and CO.sub.2. Use of the above absorbent solution leads to higher selectivity for H.sub.2 S than observed when the severely-hindered amine is used alone without the severely-hindered aminoacid.

  • Patent number: 4892674
Abstract: A new alkaline absorbent solution containing the additive of a severely-hindered amine salt and/or a severely-hindered aminoacid to a non-hindered amine such as N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) is provided. Use of the above absorbent solution leads to higher selectivity for H.sub.2 S than observed when MDEA is used alone without the additives.

  • Patent number: 4892677
Abstract: A new process is described which is useful for producing novel articles of manufacture useful for monitoring the time-temperature history of perishable items. The process initially involves forming a solution comprised of a diacetylenic monomer and a solvent. The solution is frozen, and the frozen solution having crystalline diacetylenic monomer therein is irradiated to partially polymerize the diacetylenic monomer. Partial polymerization of the crystalline diacetylenic monomer admixed with frozen solvent results in the production of a novel article of manufacture having color. The novel article of manufacture is comprised of frozen solvent, diacetylenic monomer, and colored polydiacetylene. Due to the intensity of the color of the polydiacetylene, the entire article of manufacture appears to be colored. The colored article of manufacture may be attached to various perishables to monitor the shelf life of the perishables.

  • Patent number: 4854975
Abstract: A solar cell assembly wherein a solar cell is provided with electrical layer contacts for both the p-type semiconductor layer and the n-type semiconductor layer which are exposed on a top side of the solar cell, so that electrical contact to both layers can be made from the top side of the cell, and a glass cover overlying the solar cell includes a pair of U-shaped electrical cell contacts extending over the sides of the glass cover so that one leg of each U makes contact with one of the layer contacts and the other leg is accessible from the top of the cover glass. External electrical contact to the cell is easily and conveniently made, and cells can be electrically joined to adjacent cells in an array using a connector bar. The glass cover also supports the solar cell so that excess material on the substrate of the solar cell can be etched away to reduce the weight of the solar cell assembly.
