    Abstract: A spike for facilitating the introduction of liquid under pressure into a container containing a substance is provided which includes an elongate spike shaft having a spike side wall, a longitudinal axis, a distal end and a proximally located end portion, where the distal end has a sharp, pointed tip. An introduction channel is located within the spike shaft for receiving liquid into the container where a portion of the introduction channel is angled to cause liquid to travel out of the introduction channel in a direction non-parallel to the longitudinal axis of the spike shaft. An extraction channel may be included within the spike shaft for removing liquid from the container, where the extraction channel extends through the elongate spike shaft towards the proximally located end portion.

    Abstract: Catheters having improved flexibility control, which can be provided by a slidable core wire disposed within the catheter and by shafts formed from segmented spine wires disposed within polymeric tubes. One catheter is an angioplasty catheter including an axially slidable core wire disposed within an inflation lumen, and having a pressure seal disposed about the core wire extending proximally from the catheter proximal end. The slidable core wire can provide a varying degree of stiffness to the catheter. The catheter can have greater stiffness when the core wire is axially distally extended and less stiffness when the core wire is retracted. One catheter has a shaft including a spine wire or stiffening element within an outer polymeric tube. The spine wire can include multiple segments having alternating wide and narrow segments, with the wide segments contacting the outer tube and contributing stiffness to the shaft and with the narrow segments contributing flexibility to the shaft.

    Abstract: Organs and other tissue structures are isolated and perfused with a therapeutic agent. Isolation is effected by endovascularly positioning catheters having occlusion balloons within the arteries or other blood vessels which supply blood to the organ. Similarly, blood flow from the organ back to the patient's circulatory system is blocked by endovascularly positioning one or more catheters carrying occlusion members within the veins or other blood vessels leading from the organ. The therapeutic agent may then be perfused through the organ in either an antegrade or retrograde fashion using the endovascularly positioned catheters while maintaining isolation.

    Abstract: A method and device for perfusing an organ system is provided. The device may be further described as a catheter or cannula with an expandable flow control member positioned of the distal portion of the catheter shaft. The flow control member has a porous portion, and at least one impermeable portion, which prevent fluid from flowing out the ends of the flow control member. The flow control member is further characterized as having an interior chamber that is in fluid communication with a perfusion lumen that extends along the length of the catheter shaft and is in fluid communication with an external perfusion pump. The perfusion lumen is configured for providing flow to the interior of the flow control member, to create radial expansion thereof and to provide adequate flow to the arch vessels through said porous portion to sustain the metabolic demands of the brain.

In one embodiment, the firs inner surface is spaced outwardly from the second outer surface when the device is attached to the skin. The inner surface can have a textured visually wettable surface, such as an etched surface, to provide a visual indication of leakage from the interface between the skin penetrating members and the skin.
