  • Patent number: 6169976
Abstract: In one aspect, a method for activating, installing, and regulating use of a licensed product is disclosed. A customer licenses or buys a licensed product from a distributor. The distributor registers information describing the customer, the licensed product, and other information about the transaction at a database maintained by the licensor, manufacturer, or developer of the licensed product. The licensor communicates information describing the transaction to the customer, and the distributor ships media containing the licensed product to the customer. The customer connects to the database through a server and requests the licensed product to be activated, providing the information that describes the transaction in its request. In response, the server of the licensor generates encrypted key information that uniquely identifies the customer, the licensed product, and a license level or other information about the maximum permitted extent of use of the licensed product.

  • Patent number: 6167385
Abstract: A method for financing a supply of goods (a supply chain) from a supplier to a buyer in which the buyer has a lower cost of funds than the supplier. According to the method, the buyer generates a purchase order for the goods which is forwarded to the supplier who in turn ships the goods to the buyer. The supplier sends an invoice to the buyer which stores the invoice data in a database. The financing institution electronically accesses the database to retrieve the daily invoices. The financial institution then calculates the financing applicable to the shipped good and forwards a payment to the supplier. Upon maturity of the financing, the buyer settles with the financial institution by remitting the gross proceeds.

  • Patent number: 6157920
Abstract: The invention provides techniques for implementing secure transactions using an instrument referred to as "executable digital cash." In an illustrative embodiment, a first user generates a piece of digital cash representing an offer made by that user. The piece of digital cash includes a digital certificate authorizing the first user to make specified transfers, and an offer program characterizing the offer. The piece of digital cash is broadcast or otherwise transmitted to one or more additional users, utilizing a mobile agent or other suitable mechanism, such that a given one of these users can evaluate the offer using the offer program. For example, a second user could execute the offer program with a specific bid as an input to determine what that user would receive upon acceptance of his bid.
