  • Patent number: 7184713
Abstract: Techniques to determine a set of rates for a set of data streams to be transmitted in a multi-channel communication system. A group of transmission channels to be used for each data stream is initially identified. An equivalent system for each group is then defined to have an AWGN (or flat) channel and a spectral efficiency equal to the average spectral efficiency of the transmission channels in the group. A metric for each group is then derived based on the associated equivalent system, e.g., set to the SNR needed by the equivalent system to support the average spectral efficiency. A rate for each data stream is then determined based on the metric associated with the data stream. The rate is deemed to be supported by the communication system if the SNR required to support the data rate by the communication system is less than or equal to the metric.

  • Patent number: 7127274
Abstract: In wireless communications, a method and system for enhancing signal decoding capability in null areas uses dithering to break up or modify the null areas. The null areas form in overlapping regions of the beams of two antennas or in overlapping regions of a single signal that is subject to multipath. Dithering is used to spread the null areas over a wider region so that a WTRU in an overlap region will not statically remain within a null area.

  • Patent number: 7123922
Abstract: A transmitter directed, distributed receiver using path diversity provided by the distribution of the receiver. Advantage is taken of the uncorrelated variations over time in the condition of channels between a common transmitter and several users. The greater the variation in the channel condition of a particular channel over time, the greater the increase in total system throughput provided. An access metric represents the instantaneous channel condition of the communication system between each user and the transmitter with respect to the average channel condition of each channel. Alternatively, the access metric represents the instantaneous channel condition with respect to the average data throughput over that channel. The common transmitting station uses the access metric to directly compare the desirability of granting each channel access with the desirability of granting each other channel access. The user that has the greatest access metric is provided access to the channel.

  • Patent number: 7110772
Abstract: The system for providing location independent uniform service access for communication subscribers provides the capability to dynamically translate the local communications access paradigms to enable the subscriber to access the desired communications services without manually translating these access modalities from those known by the subscriber in their home service area to those used in this new locale. The implementation of the present system for providing location independent uniform service access for communication subscribers is illustrated as being resident in the subscriber's communication network access device.

  • Patent number: 7103314
Abstract: Countries or regions of the world can have different regulations governing wireless devices. A client product advantageously conforms to any regulatory environment, thereby allowing the client product to operate permissibly in any wireless network. The client product scans all frequencies at a predetermined interval for explicit information on regulation-conformant methods of operation, including frequencies and output power levels. If the client product receives a beacon, then the client product extracts relevant information from the beacon. Based on the relevant information, the client product operates in either the infrastructure mode or the ad hoc mode. On the other hand, if the client product does not receive explicit information, the client product detects other types of information and implicitly derives methods of operation in both infrastructure and ad hoc modes that conform to local regulations.

  • Patent number: 7068977
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for reducing interference in a wireless communication system utilizing an antenna array. The antenna array uses one or more signal channels for communicating with one or more mobile terminals. First, at least one channel is assigned as an empty channel in which no desired signal is carried so as to provide a representation of all relevant interference. Since the spatial characteristics of the empty channel and the regular signal channels should be very similar, the spatial signature of the signal channels is analyzed based on the interference received on the empty channel and the desired signals received on at least one signal channel. The analyzed spatial signature is then used for reducing the interference on all signal channels.

  • Patent number: 7062250
Abstract: In a cellular video telephone having a built-in battery, the remaining electric power of the battery is detected. The data communication speed and the display of image on a display are variably controlled based on the detected remaining battery power, that is, the communication speed is lowered and the display is turned off, as the remaining power decreases. Alternatively or in addition, the communication speed and the image display are controlled variably based on availability of external power source in the course of voice and image communication.

  • Patent number: RE45775
Abstract: Using at least one MIMO-capable transceiver allows weighting calculations for signals transmitted and received, and enables individual packets to adapt, in a scalable, flexible, and responsive fashion to the real-world dynamics of a continuously varying communications network environment. The method and system of this invention use adaptively-derived diversity means to rapidly and efficiently distinguish the desired signal from noise, network interference, and external interference impinging on the network's transceivers and can transmit with lessened overhead. ADC operations and signal transformations continuously update combiner weights to match dynamically-varying environmental and traffic conditions, thereby continuously matching necessitated signal and waveform transformations with environmental and signal effects and sources.

  • Patent number: RE47127
Abstract: A frame generating apparatus accommodating a client signal in an optical data transfer unit frame with a higher bit rate than the client signal includes a deserializer, a plurality of generic mapping procedure circuits, and a serializer. The deserializer deserializes the client signal into parallel signals, the number of parallel signals corresponding to the number of tributary slots used in the optical data transfer unit frame. The plurality of generic mapping procedure circuits inserts data and stuff into a frame accommodating portion of the optical data transfer unit frame based on a difference in the bit rate between the client signal and the optical data transfer unit frame. The serializer serializes the parallel signals output from the plurality of generic mapping procedure circuits.

  • Patent number: RE47190
Abstract: A method of mapping symbols of a physical control format indicator channel (PCFICH) is described. A start position of a resource element to map the symbols for the PCFICH is determined by flooring a value, obtained by multiplying the number of resource blocks by a variable proportional to a symbol index for the PCFICH and then dividing the multiplied result by 2, wherein the resource blocks are transmitted in downlink. The symbols are mapped in the start position. Therefore, a problem of wasting resource elements or not being able to implement mapping can be solved by applying a simple mapping rule while mapping symbols of the PCFICH.
