    Abstract: A portable printer is provided having a printer mechanism capable of printing on media and an RFID encoder for encoding information onto RFID circuits coupled to the media. The printer mechanism and RFID encoder are contained in the housing of the printer with a programmed controller for controlling the printer mechanism and RFID encoder. The printer mechanism includes a print head and motor for driving a platen roller to advance the media across the print head and passed the antenna of the RFID encoder. The media may be stored in a compartment in the housing on a roll or fan-fold in which multiple RFID circuits are provided along the length of the media. The programmed controller in the housing operates, responsive to communication received from a host terminal or computer, to send information to the print head to print information on the media and/or information to the encoder to encode the RFID circuit.

Based on the information about gloss characteristics, the CPU controls a thermal head through a head controller so that a specific amount of thermal energy is applied to an image recording surface of the medium after image recording. The thermal energy applied effects variations of glossiness corresponding to the additional information to record. Through the application of the thermal energy, glossiness of the medium varies and the additional information is thereby recorded on the medium.

The printer is programmed to link with a host and then operate responsive to data received in RF signals from a host linked to the printer. Each portable printer has a unique serial number which is recorded in a barcode present on the housing of the printer and/or in an RFID tag coupled to the printer. The host has either, or both, an optical scanner or an RFID transmitter/receiver to read the printer's barcode or RF signals from the tag to obtain the printer's serial number.

When data is transferred over this cable, one slice section is divided into a plurality of sections, the slice section corresponding to a time slot required to transfer a unit of print data corresponding to a plurality of dot printing elements of the plurality of heads, each divided section is further divided into a number of subsections the number of which is equal to the number of the print heads.

Specific printer operations, such as the number of characters printed, distance of recording medium transportation, and the number of times the automatic paper cutter is operated, can thus be individually accumulated, and the historical counts, that is, the cumulative counts since the printer was first used, can be stored to memory.

    Abstract: A method of controlling a media-advance drive motor of a printer in a manner that preserves accuracy in the incremental advances of print media between printing swaths, while optimizing throughput and accounting for variations in printer system response characteristics. A printer control algorithm commences each media-advance step by accelerating the media-advance drive motor to a maximum velocity. The motor is thereafter decelerated by controlling the drive voltage to the motor as needed to conform to a predetermined decaying velocity versus position function that is representative of a specimen system. The velocity versus position function is correlated to the required media position so that a media-advance motor following that function will arrive at a zero velocity at the precise instant that the media arrives at the position representing the end of its incremental advance.

    Abstract: A miniature printer is provided with a printer mechanism in a housing. A thermal printhead is fixedly mounted in the mechanism. The mechanism and the housing define a compartment for a roll of paper which is loosely disposed in the housing and is extended over the thermal printhead. The compartment is closed by a cover hinged to the housing at one end thereof. A platen roller is located in the cover in an opening larger than the shaft of the roller, which opening and cover provides a floating mount for the platen roller. A driven gear which rotates the platen roller is mounted on the shaft near one end thereof. A pair of hairpin springs have ends which are located in the path which the platen roller takes as the cover is closed and moves into engagement with the platen roller. The springs align the platen roller with the printing elements on the printhead and bias the platen roller into engagement with the printhead, while latching the platen roller and the cover in closed position.

    Abstract: A simple, yet accurate way of determining calibration values for correcting the characteristic sinusoidal feed errors of a printer or other recording device (such as a fax machine, plotter, etc.). A sheet of calibration media is employed for facilitating the calculation of the calibration values. The sheet is used in a way that prevents the calibration media errors from affecting the calculation. In particular, the sheet of calibration media is fed twice through the printer, and position data is collected each time. The data is processed in a way that cancels the attendant calibration media errors so that the calculated calibration values precisely correct the characteristic sinusoidal feed errors of that printer.
