  • Patent number: 6464819
Abstract: A method and apparatus for tabbing a piece of folded material with one or more tape feeders mounted on the apparatus. The tape feeder includes a roll of tape, a transporting mechanism for advancing the tape in order to release a fixed length section of the tape, wherein the released section partially extends below the traveling path of the folded material with the adhesive side facing the leading edge of the folded material, a V-shaped knife positioned above the traveling path and downstream from the released tape section, wherein the apparatus further comprises a moving mechanism to move the folded material further downstream so as to cause the released section of tape to contact and fold over the leading edge of the folded material. As the folded material moves further downstream, the released section of tape is separated by the V-shaped knife to form a tab. A pair of sealer rollers located further downstream are used to firmly press the tab across the leading edge of the folded material.

  • Patent number: 6439289
Abstract: A personal postage stamp dispenser is provided for dispensing individual postage stamps of the pressure sensitive adhesively backed type from their release liner backing strips. The dispenser is particularly suited for use as an advertizing or promotional article and is provided in combination therewith. The dispenser can be economically produced so that it can be given away as a promotional item. In its preferred form, the dispenser is hand-sized and supported on wheels or rollers so that it can rest on the top surface of a desk or tabletop. As so mounted, it will be prominently located so that promotional or decorative material on its cover is conspicuously displayed and receives high exposure. The dispenser operates by moving it by hand across the supporting surface of the desk or tabletop. Linkage connected to and driven by the wheels or supporting rollers feed the backing strip around a peeling edge which peels the stamps individually out of the housing of the dispenser into the free hand of the user.

  • Patent number: 6432249
Abstract: A method for making a composite extrusion die for making a cellular honeycomb structure with thin cell walls. The method includes the steps of drilling a grid of separate feed holes/channels into an inlet face of an extrusion die base element, and cutting a grid of intersecting primary outlet slots into an outlet face of the base element, where every alternate one of the primary outlet slots is in direct communication with a plurality of the feed channels. Further, the method includes cutting a grid of intersecting secondary outlet slots into the outlet face, where each one of the secondary outlet slots bisects each one of the primary outlet slots. The method further includes scoring a plurality of indentations into that region of the outlet face that does not contain any of the primary and secondary outlet slots, and filling each of the feed channels and each of the primary and secondary outlet slots with a filler material.

  • Patent number: 6390170
Abstract: A manufacturing apparatus and method for facilitating, locating and securement of supports or cushioning blocks on a container panel includes a table for receiving the container panel and a bi-directionally, vertically movable frame which receives a template. The frame is raised and lowered by one or more linear actuators which may be double acting, hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders, ball screw operators or similar devices. The template includes a specific pattern of openings which correspond to the desired locations of supports or cushioning blocks. A container panel is placed on the table, the template is disposed in the frame and the frame is lowered onto the panel. An adhesive such as a hot melt adhesive is distributed on the panel through the openings and the supports or cushioning blocks are positioned according to the template on the panel. • Patent number: 6363990
Abstract: In a coating film transfer tool in which a transferable film is carried by a tape base, tape breakage and non-uniform film application due to twisting are avoided by providing the tape supply and take-up reels in a cassette which also includes a fixed transfer head and mounting shafts. The cassette is disposed in a casing with its transfer head protruding out of the casing, and with its mounting shafts supported in bearings in the casing so that the cassette and transfer head can rotate relative to the casing. Since the tape cassette is rotatable integrally with the tape and the transfer head, when the transfer head is rotated to follow a tape-receiving surface, the tape does not become twisted.

  • Patent number: 6360801
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for automatically applying self-adhesive protective sheeting to surface parts of vehicle bodies, a specific rectangular piece of protective sheeting in the form of stock roll is grasped on its non-adhesive side, using a robot-controlled tentering frame with suction legs, is drawn off and is cut off. Before the sheeting blank is laid on to the body, in the freely stretched-out state tear-off lines are perforated, preferably from the non-adhesive sheeting side, in the region of accessory parts by means of a perforating device guided along definite contour lines. Thereafter the protective sheeting, which is thus prepared and stretched out so as to be free of creases in the tentering frame, is lowered in the correct position onto the associated part by the handling robot and laid onto the surface part so as to be free of bubbles. The sheetings are subsequently pressed down in a brushing manner under an elastic brushing bar extending over the entire vehicle width.

  • Patent number: 6361636
Abstract: In the manufacture of a hardcover book, a laminated sheet is fed to the inner book spine with a wide roll machine, and the sheet consists of a paper-laminated gauze. The laminate is subsequently treated and has a flat fine creping with a lengthwise elasticity of 5-15%. The end of the laminate sheet is fed to the inner book (12) perpendicular to the lengthwise direction of the inner book spine and pressed onto the glued inner book spine followed by the 10 mm overlaps to either side. The joint material (36) that is applied is elastic perpendicular to the inner book spine. The inner book can then be trimmed and rounded, and the joint (36) stretches without losing stability or tearing.

  • Patent number: 6322655
Abstract: A planar form or structure is used to create a laminated card or other planar article. The structure and related method allow the carrier surface of the laminated article to be customized or personalized, before it is laminated, such as by adding to the carrier surface an account number, signature, address, serial number, photograph, microchip, or other planar indicia. The carrier surface is adhered to the transparent lamina across substantially all its surface area to create a strong, tamper resistant bond. The laminated card is created from a multiple-ply structure defined within the boundaries of the larger form. The multiple-ply structure has horizontal dimensions substantially corresponding to the ultimate horizontal dimensions of the laminated card or article being created. The carrier is printable and able to be laminated on both sides, yet if desired, the carrier can be limited to only a single ply, thereby reducing the thickness of the resulting laminated card.
