  • Patent number: 5982747
Abstract: The dynamic synchronous transfer mode dual ring topology has two rings with opposite fiber directions. The dual rings may have a plurality of common nodes. A first channel may be established in a first segment extending between a first and second nodes. Tokens associated with the first channel may be provided. In this way, time slots may be transmitted in the first channel from the first node to the second node. If a fiber failure occurs in the first segment, the second node is likely to first detect the fiber failure and transmit a fiber failure message. It is then determined if the first channel extends across the fiber failure. If the first channel is affected by the fiber failure then a channel failure message is transmitted and the first channel is terminated and all the tokens associated with the first segment are removed. If the first channel is not affected then time slots are continued to be transmitted on the first channel.

  • Patent number: 5966372
Abstract: Methods for controlling the blocking of a network-supported primary service by a network-supported secondary service sharing the same network router/switch.A probabilistic method for resource control identifies for each secondary service connection request the likelihood that if it is allocated a network router/switch server, a subsequent primary service connection request will be blocked, i.e., denied a server allocation of its own. If it is determined that it is unlikely that allocating a secondary service connection request a server will cause a subsequent primary service connection request to be blocked, an idle server is allocated to a currently pending secondary service connection request at the router/switch.

  • Patent number: 5956336
Abstract: A circuit and method is provided for implementing a content addressable memory circuit (100) in which an output word is produced which corresponds to the content of a reference word containing an ATM header. According to a first aspect, a binary search logic circuit (104) binarily searches the memory array (101) to find a match word whose content is equal to that of the reference word. Output signals indicate either that a match has been found or that the binary searching of the memory array (101) should continue at addresses either above or below the location address of the match word. According to a second aspect, the content addressable memory circuit (100) performs a concurrent search of switching identifiers, virtual circuit identifiers and virtual path identifiers, to determine if a virtual path connection or virtual circuit connection exists for an ATM header.

  • Patent number: 5956348
Abstract: Variable length LAN frames can be segmented into fixed length cells to allow the data in the frames to be transported through an intermediate cell-based system, such as an ATM network. Where transport through the intermediate system results in time gaps between data units extracted from the cells, special symbol combinations can be inserted into the time gaps to permit frame-representing data to be forwarded toward its destination as a "stretched frame" without waiting for all the cells representing the frame to arrive. When a stretched LAN frame is received at a "stretch-aware" LAN station, the special symbol combinations are detected and removed to recover at least the data payload of the original LAN frame.

  • Patent number: 5949753
Abstract: An ELAN having redundant default gateways is attached to an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) communications network. The ELAN's redundant default gateways are comprised of a first and second routers. The first router is associated with a primary default gateway and the second router is associated with a backup default gateway. Both the primary and backup default gateways are connected to the ELAN and both the primary and backup default gateways are configured with a default gateway IP address and associated MAC address. Initially, the primary default gateway registers the default gateway MAC address, thereby becoming the active default gateway. While the primary default gateway is active, the backup default gateway continually attempts to register the default gateway MAC address.
