  • Patent number: 6846529
Abstract: The invention provides a low density paperboard material for use in producing an insulated container, and is especially well-suited for making cups. The paperboard material comprises a paperboard web including wood fibers and expanded microspheres, and has a relatively low density ranging from about 6 to about 10 lb/3MSF/mil, a relatively high caliper ranging from about 24 to about 35 mil, and an internal bond strength of at least about 80×10?3 ft-lbf preferably at least 100×10?3 ft-lbf. For applications such as cups the material is also coated on one or both sides with a barrier coating, preferably low density polyethylene, to limit liquid penetration into the web. The low density paperboard material of the invention is convertible for manufacture of containers, particularly cups, and the surface of the low density board may have a Sheffield smoothness of 300 SU or greater.

  • Patent number: 6841210
Abstract: Disclosed is a multilayer structured quartz glass crucible, for pulling up silicon single crystal, whose structure has at least three layers comprising: a translucent outer layer made of naturally occurring quartz glass and having a large number of pores, a translucent intermediate layer, made of synthetic quartz glass and having a large number of pores, and a transparent inner layer substantially free from pores and made of a synthetic quartz glass. Thermal convection within the silicon melt is suppressed by use of the quartz glass crucible, thereby preventing oscillation on the surface of the silicon melt. A method for producing the quartz glas crucible is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6830793
Abstract: A composite material is provided that includes an array of machine elements disposed within a matrix material. Each machine element includes a cross-section defining an internal space that is filled with a viscous fluid. Preferably, the machine elements are provided in complementary pairs of tubular members, with the internal spaces of the tubular members communicating with one another. When subjected to a predetermined force, the cross-sections of the tubular members change shape, changing the volume of the internal spaces, and causing fluid to flow into or out of the internal spaces. Preferably, under the predetermined force, one tubular member increases in volume and the other tubular member simultaneously decreases in volume, thereby causing fluid to flow between the tubular elements to dissipate energy from the predetermined force.

  • Patent number: 6827996
Abstract: This invention relates to a threaded joint for steel pipes which comprises a pin and a box each having a contact surface including a threaded portion and an unthreaded metal contact portion and which can be prevented from galling during repeated fastening and loosening without application of a compound grease. A solid lubricant coating which comprises a lubricating powder such as molybdenum disulfide and a resin binder is formed on the contact surface of at least one of the pin and the box. The solid lubricant coating has a hardness of 70-140 on the Rockwell M scale and an adhesive strength of at least 500 N/m as determined by the SAICAS (Surface And Interfacial Cutting Analysis System) method, and it exhibits excellent galling resistance even in the environment of high-temperature oil wells. Inclusion of ultraviolet screening fine particles such as titanium oxide fine particles in the solid lubricant coating increases the rust preventing properties of the threaded joint.

  • Patent number: 6815022
Abstract: One or more sheet material layers in a multi-layer laminated structure is reinforced by adhesive bridges that extend through openings in the layer and tie together the layers on either side of the reinforced layer. A plurality of openings are provided in the layer or layers to be reinforced. The openings are spaced apart and distributed over the surface of the layer. Accordingly, when the layer is incorporated into a multi-layer structure, the adhesive applied to the layer, or to the layers on either side thereof, is forced through the openings so that a continuous adhesive connection is formed between the layers on opposite sides of the reinforced layer via the adhesive bridges that extend through the openings.

  • Patent number: 6811843
Abstract: An insulating beverage cup or sleeve is produced with a foam layer disposed on an inner surface of a food or beverage paper stock. A polyethylene film layer is arranged in a position between a paper stock layer and an inside surface of the beverage container. The foam layer decreases the energy transfer between the beverage and the user's hands allowing the user to hold onto the cup for an extended period of time without causing user discomfort or pain, e.g. greatly extends the hold time of the paper cup. The exterior surface of the beverage cup remains highly printable and predisposed to high quality graphics both before and after cup manufacture.
