Abstract: A system and method for providing user input to an application executing on an interactive television system wherein a user provides non-textual information to the interactive television system and this information is converted by a server to textual information which is provided to the application. In one embodiment, a digitizer pad coupled to a set-top box is used to digitize the user's handwriting. The digitized information is conveyed to a remote server which converts the digitized handwriting data into textual information. The textual information is conveyed to the set-top box, where it is input to an application executing on the set-top box. In another embodiment, a microphone is coupled to a set-top box. The microphone allows the user to input voice information which is digitized and conveyed to the server for conversion into textual information. The textual information is conveyed back to the set-top box and is input to an application executing on the set-top box.

Abstract: The present invention provides an improved method and apparatus to collect and provide viewer feedback to broadcasts. According to one aspect of the present invention, a rating is generated for a broadcast by a server system. The rating is based at least in part on viewer feedback to the broadcast, and the rating indicates a likelihood of interest in the broadcast for potential subsequent viewers. Access to the rating is then provided so that predications can be made as to whether or not the broadcast will be of interest to potential subsequent viewers. According to another aspect of the present invention, the rating is provided from the server system to an entertainment system, and the broadcast can be selected for viewing at an entertainment system based on the rating generated by the server system. In one embodiment, the viewer feedback is received at the entertainment system in response to a feedback questionnaire.

Abstract: An interactive entertainment and information system using a television set-top box, wherein pages of information are periodically provided to the set-top box for user interaction therewith. The pages include associated meta-data defining active locations on each page. When a page is displayed, the user interacts with the active locations on the page by entering commands via a remote control device, whereby the system reads the meta-data and takes the action associated with the location. Actions include moving to other active locations, hyperlinking to other pages, entering user form data and submitting the data as a form into memory. The form data may be read from memory, and the pages may be related to a conventional television program, thereby providing significant user interactivity with the television.
Abstract: An automatic reminding system for reminding a user or tuning a receiver, such as a television, radio, recording device, computer, etc. to a particular carrier based on a detected ID code broadcast on that particular carrier. A user first activates the system when a broadcast signal is broadcasting an ID code that corresponds to a program that is broadcast. The receiver will either automatically remind a user that a particular broadcast is being broadcast or tune to a carrier that broadcasts the broadcast that corresponds to the ID code that was previously stored. Further the ID code may alternatively program the receiver with a date/time stamp to automatically tune to a particular carrier at a particular time.
Abstract: A hardware configuration suited for a digital video and audio signal broadcast system such as a near-video on-demand apparatus (NVOD apparatus) includes a compilation unit, a play-out unit, a transmission unit, and a subscriber unit. The compilation unit stores several weeks to several months worth of the video and audio signals obtained by reproducing, compressing, encoding, and editing the broadcast stock according to a long term broadcast schedule of several weeks to several months. The play-out unit stores the video and audio signals stored in the compilation unit for several days to several weeks according to a broadcast schedule of several days to several weeks, reproduces the video and audio signals which become necessary for the real time broadcast, and adds a time difference to these video and audio signals distributed to a plurality of channels.
Abstract: An analog/digital cable TV (CATV) includes an analog broadcast signal processor for receiving only a signal of a particular channel selected by a user and restoring an analog video signal and an analog audio signal contained in the received analog signal. Also, the CATV includes a digital broadcast signal processor for NTSC-encoding and audio-digital-to-analog-converting the received digital video and audio signals contained in the digital broadcast signal received via a phone jack to then be output to an output signal selector, and outputting the upstream signal via the phone jack connected with a CATV broadcast station. The output signal selector selectively applies the signals output from the digital and analog broadcast signal processors to a monitor. The monitor video-displays and audio-outputs the video and audio data contained in the signal received from the output signal selector.
Abstract: A system manager for use with an interactive cable system. The cable system has (i) an information service network for delivering information services to subscriber televisions, (ii) a plurality of home interface controllers, each home interface controller associated with a subscriber television and having a data transceiver operative over a data communications link to the headend, (iii) a plurality of subscriber selection devices, each such device associated with a home interface controller and in communication with the data transceiver thereof, for permitting subscriber interaction, and (iv) a plurality of interactive controllers, disposed at the headend, each interactive controller in assignable television communication over the network with a subscriber television and in data communication with a subscriber selection device.

Abstract: An interactive information distribution system includes service provider equipment for generating an information stream that is coupled to an information channel and transmitted to subscriber equipment. The service provider also generates a command signal that is coupled to a command channel and transmitted to the subscriber equipment. The service provider also receives information manipulation requests from the subscriber via a back channel. A communication network supporting the information channel, command channel and back channel is coupled between the service provider equipment and the subscriber equipment. The service provider equipment contains two geographically distributed components: central server equipment and a remote video session manager. The central server equipment provides information streams to the remote video session manager in response to information manipulation commands.

Abstract: A video communications system (10) includes a communications controller (30) that interfaces with a broadband/narrowband network (40) to distribute video signals to a plurality of remote sites (104) in a multi-site location (102). Each remote site (104) includes a channel selector and signaling unit (50) and at least one television set (100). A user enters user input information into a remote selector (70) for processing by the channel selector and signaling unit (50). The channel selector and signaling unit (50) sends the user input information to the communication controller (30) over a video signal distribution network (90) at an upstream frequency selected at a user selectable setting (52). The communication controller (30) responds by modulating the desired video information onto a downstream frequency for transmission to the television set (100) on the video signal distribution network (90).
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a communication system which can be utilized to complement an existing cable television system in which a central office transmits signals along a coaxial cable to a user unit through a tap. The communication system features a central transmitting/receiving unit for wirelessly transmitting first signals generated at the central office and for receiving second signals. A first response unit which may be connected to the tap will receive the first signals wirelessly transmitted from the central transmitting/receiving unit, and will generate and wirelessly transmit the second signals to be received by the central transmitting/receiving unit. A further second response unit may be connected to the user unit, and the second response unit may generate a third signal to be wirelessly received by the first response. The third signal may be used to control the tap connected to the first response unit.
Abstract: The present invention provides a digital wireless home computer system. One embodiment of the invention includes a computer with a first digital wireless transceiver, and a home input/output node having a second digital wireless transceiver for communicatively coupling to the first wireless transceiver. This node also has (1) an output device, communicatively coupled to the second wireless transceiver, for presenting an output presentation based on signals received from the computer via the wireless transceivers, and (2) an input device, communicatively coupled to the second wireless transceiver, for receiving input signals from a user interfacing with the home input/output node.
Abstract: On-demand electronic advertising information is provided for items used in scenes of television programs. The advertising information is received along with broadcasts of associated television programs. Selected advertisement modes alert a viewer when advertising information is available for an item displayed in a scene of the television program broadcast. The viewer alert comprises displayed marks superimposed over the broadcast of the television program. The displayed marks comprise indicators for each item for which advertising data is available, and the indicators may be representative of the items to which the indicators correspond. The advertising information for a particular item is selected when the viewer selects the indicator corresponding to the item in which the viewer is interested. Upon selection, the advertising information is displayed along with the broadcast of the currently selected television program. The advertising information may be used to electronically order the associated item.
