  • Patent number: 4592743
Abstract: This invention relates to a device for dosing and mixing of two or more liquids. According to the invention, the liquids are led to a chamber (26) where they are mixed, an outlet (30) from the chamber being closed at the same time. When the chamber (26) has been filled, the outlet (30) is opened while the inlets (21, 22) for the starting liquids are simultaneously closed, and when the chamber (26) has been emptied, the outlet (30) is closed again and the inlet or inlets (21, 22) are opened. This cyclic process is repeated any desired number of times. The chamber has a variable volume, and changes of the volume are sensed by a sensor (28), which controls the opening and closing of the inlets and the outlets. The device for carrying out the method is provided with a mechanical bistable flip-flop device, which in one of its stable positions opens the inlets (21, 22) and closes the outlet (30), and in the other stable position closes the inlets and opens the outlet.

  • Patent number: 4578073
Abstract: A composite waste-containment garment comprising a disposable, elasticized waste-containment insert secured by means integral with the insert inside a non-elasticized over-garment such as a conventional reuseable diaper, or a disposable diaper, or overpants, or the combination of a non-elasticized reuseable diaper covered with an outer-garment such as overpants having elasticized leg cuffs. The insert comprises an absorbent core and a liquid impervious backsheet. Preferably, it also includes a liquid pervious, hydrophobic topsheet. The insert has a width less than one-half the midsection girths of intended users and, preferably, the absorbent core has front and back waist portions which have widths of from about fifteen to about thirty-five percent of the midsection girths of intended users, or about one-quarter the midsection girth of nominally sized intended wearer.

  • Patent number: 4573977
Abstract: The present invention is a bladder-type syringe which a user employs to collect blood samples or deliver prefilled medications or function as a passive indicator of balloon or cuff inflation on balloon-tipped catheter or endotracheal tubes. The bladder-type syringe includes an elongated bladder and a hypodermic needle. The elongated bladder is formed out of a high gas-diffusion barrier film and has an open end and a closed end. The hypodermic needle, which the user employs to penetrate into a blood vessel, has a sharp distal end and a blunt proximal end. A coupling device fixedly, but detachably, and fluidly couples the elongated bladder at its open end to the hypodermic needle at its blunt proximal end which extends into the coupling device to reduce its dead space. The bladder-type syringe also includes an elongated member having a first end and a second end and also having a flat surface with a keeper slot at its first end. The elongated bladder is fixedly, but detachably, coupled to the keeper slot.

  • Patent number: 4572172
Abstract: A molding cast system for fractures of the humerus and of the radius and ulna that includes a molding cast having a wall member forming a substantially horizontal chamber for holding the forearm and a substantially vertical chamber for holding the upper arm, with an elongated aperture along the top of the horizontal chamber and an elongated aperture along the front of the vertical chamber. Connectors having fasteners hold the edges of the wall member defining the apertures together. A neck sling is affixed to the wall member. The wall member has an outer layer of soft flannel; a middle layer of a laminated plaster of paris casting material; and an inner layer of a flexible porous material next to the skin. The molding cast is prefabricated and can be shipped in a rolled condition to a hospital or doctor's office where it can be treated to be made pliable for specific application to a patient.

  • Patent number: 4558694
Abstract: A hand splint is provided which is designed to support the metacarpophalangeal joints and resist ulnar drift of the proximal phalanges, while at the same time avoiding restriction of normal hand use. The splint has a bendable support frame of a generally oblong shape which is adapted to fit the palmar arch of the hand. Four generally rounded finger separators are attached to the frame to separate each of the fingers and provide lateral resistance to ulnar drift thereof. Preferably the support frame and finger separators are formed of wire. The entire splint is enclosed in a pliant foamed cushioning material which according to one embodiment can be further covered with an abrasion resistant, flexible outer sheeting material to resist wear. Straps or other fastening means are used to secure the splint against the hand. A process for making the splint is also provided.

  • Patent number: 4554913
Abstract: An adjustable joint for a knee orthosis or brace. The joint preferably has a polycentric pivot with first and second members having mating, gear teeth and outwardly extending, elongated bars. As one member rotates about its axis, it causes the other member to rotate in an opposite direction about its axis with the bars travelling along respective first and second paths. In the disclosed embodiments, stop members are selectively positioned along the travel paths of the bars with a portion of one in the path of the upper bar which is attached to the thigh engaging component of the brace and a portion of the other in the path of the lower bar attached to the calf engaging component of the brace. The portions of each stop member are preferably eccentrically mounted for rotation about axes spaced from and parallel to the axes of the first and second members of the polycentric pivot.

  • Patent number: 4553538
Abstract: The present invention is used during an upper gastrointestinal endoscopic procedure with the patient in the left lateral decubitus position. A disposable or nondisposable pillow case or covering extension section is positioned below the patient's mouth. The covering and extension section absorbs any salivary or gastric secretions. In addition, loops or pockets are positioned on the covering or extended area to hold a suction catheter during the endoscopic examination. A suction catheter may be held by attachment to a loop or pocket on the extension section of the pillow covering or may be held on the extension section, near the patient, when the catheter is not in use. The absorbent extended area of the pillow covering employs a plastic layer to further protect the surface below the extended covering area.
