Patent number: 5570321Abstract: A method of determining a reference seismic velocity model that includes lateral and vertical variations in a stratified subterranean medium is disclosed. The invention recognizes that each unknown prestack traveltime curve may be expressed as the sum of a best fit hyperbola and a non-hyperbolic perturbation term. After the best fit hyperbola has been determined and used to correct the traces for normal moveout (NMO), the non-hyperbolic perturbation term is solved for using a simulated annealing technique. In addition, the problem of topologically representing a subsurface having complicated horizon geometries is bypassed by assuming a smooth and continuous, rather than a layered and discontinuous, velocity model. This assumption facilitates raytracing and in most cases, results in a model that more accurately represents the velocity function. Error minimization during model updates is achieved by solving a linear system of equations subject to a set of constraint equations.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1995Date of Patent: October 29, 1996Assignee: Atlantic Richfield CompanyInventor: Nikolaos Bernitsas

Patent number: 5568781Abstract: An induced flow underwater vehicle motor cooling jacket adaptable to an urwater vehicle motor is provided. The cooling jacket has a self-priming inlet incorporated into the afterbody motor shell section which ingests seawater during either vehicle movement through the water or operation of the vehicle motor. The motor cooling jacket has a coiled tubing assembly, forming a heat exchanger with a variable tube cross-section, wrapped tightly around the motor. One end of the tubing is attached to the self-priming inlet and the coolant discharge nozzle at the opposite end of the tubing exhausts to the region immediately ahead of the vehicle propeller. Solder is applied between each coil to maintain strength and the tightly wrapped configuration of the cooling jacket.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1995Date of Patent: October 29, 1996Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: John J. Patent number: 5566490Abstract: A sight cover for a sight, e.g. a gun sight, comprises first and second lens covers for the eyepiece and objective ends of the sight. The longitudinally displaced covers have three elastic cords extending in tension between the covers when the covers are in place. One elastic cord running adjacent the top of the sight is shorter than the other two cords causing a greater tension therein. On flipping the eyepiece end cover towards the top of the sight the top cord urges the eyepiece cover up and over the sight. The return of the three cords to their normal, untensioned positions springily displaces not only the cover from the objective end of the sight but also the entire sight cover away from the sight. The sight cover is tethered at one end to the rifle or the like.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1995Date of Patent: October 22, 1996Inventor: Dave Owen

Patent number: 5563602Abstract: In an FMCW radar system, the velocity of obstacles relative to the radar couples a Doppler frequency shift into the return signal which causes an error in the range measurement. It is known to use a radar signal having a frequency ramp that both increases and decreases to distinguish the range of an obstacle from its velocity but when multiple obstacles are present this is not practical. By using a measure of velocity from a succesion of return signals, which of the radar output signals from the upsweep and downsweep of the radar signal that relate to a particular obstacle can be identified so that the range and velocity can be determined accurately. The FMCW radar system may be provided with a frequency scanned antenna, the beamwidth determined by the processing circuitry is variable according to the size of the obstacle being detected or the range at which the radar is searching for obstacles.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1995Date of Patent: October 8, 1996Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventor: Andrew G. Patent number: 5562409Abstract: A hollow turbine blade has cooling air feed passages in the wall defining the central cavity. The wall surfaces of the feed passages slope away from the central cavity in a diverging manner, so as to reduce the step difference in metal thickness between the passages relative to the thickness of metal dividing each passage and the central cavity. The temperature gradient from the blade external surface and the wall surface of the central cavity is thus also reduced, avoiding thermal stresses.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1985Date of Patent: October 8, 1996Assignee: Rolls-Royce plcInventors: Duncan J. Patent number: 5548916Abstract: A pressure limit valve for well tools where a valve member is moveable between a first closed portion, an open position and a second closed position. A spring for closing the valve is separated from a locking chamber which contains locking elements. The locking elements are located in a locking chamber and are held deactivated by a release sleeve which separates from the valve member in an open position. When the valve moves to the second closed position it is locked by engagement of the locking elements with a stop shoulder. In use between closely coupled inflatable packers, the valve prevents trapped pressure between the packers from affecting operation of the packer valve.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1995Date of Patent: August 27, 1996Inventors: Hagen Kinsel, Rudolf Niemand

Patent number: 5546691Abstract: A cylindrical casing holds a spring mounted tape upon which is printed ballistic information. The user mounts the casing on a rifle and lines up a shot. While the rifle is in line to be fired, the user, with their trigger hand, extracts the tape from the casing to verify the ballistics of a projectile fired from the weapon by pulling a ring located at the end of the tape. Once the ballistic information is obtained, the user releases the ring which allows the tape to be retracted into the casing.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 1995Date of Patent: August 20, 1996Inventor: Mark R. Patent number: 5544586Abstract: A solid fuel ramjet tubular projectile has a generally tubular body fabried of dense material or suitable hardened material having a bore formed therethrough and having first and second ends. A plurality of partitions divide the bore into a plurality of separate combustion chambers. Each of the combustion chambers extends longitudinally substantially the length of the body. Solid fuel is formed upon the body within each of the combustion cheers. An inlet is formed at the first end of the body, into which air is received. The inlet is configured so as to substantially decelerate air entering the inlet at supersonic velocity to subsonic velocity prior to the air entering the combustion cheers. An outlet, through which combustion gases flow, is formed at the second end of the body. A mixing section is preferably formed intermediate the combustion chamber and the outlet so as to facilitate substantial mixing of the combustion gases from each combustion chamber prior to the combustion gases entering the outlet.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1994Date of Patent: August 13, 1996Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Joseph Huerta

Patent number: 5545002Abstract: A stator vane mounting platform is disclosed which provides internal cooling chambers which facilitates the flow of cooling air through the chambers and thus, the cooling of the stator assembly. Baffles define an upstream chamber and a downstream cooling chamber between adjacent stator vanes so as to maximize the airflow and, consequently, the cooling effects of this airflow. The internal cooling chambers are defined by a thick wall and a relatively thin wall, the thin wall being in direct contact with the hot gases passing through the stator assembly. Mounting lugs and flanges are directly attached to the thicker wall so as to mount the stator assembly to the turbine engine structure and to accommodate all of the mechanical stresses encountered during the turbine engine operation.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1985Date of Patent: August 13, 1996Assignee: Societe Nationale D'Etude et de Construction de Moteurs D'Aviation S.N.E.C.M.A.Inventors: Anne-Elisabeth F.
