  • Patent number: 8790283
Abstract: A fitness/medical device assisting the movement of the lower limbs during the walking activity is substantially composed of brackets firmly connected to the shoes, a set of substantially rigid rods (7, 7A) connecting the brackets with articulation joints (6, 6A, 8, 8A, 9), elastic or inextensible cables for connecting the brackets, and at least one spring (5) acting between the rods and the connecting cables. The shape and joints of the various components of the kinematic mechanism allows accumulating the energy produced by one of the lower limbs when getting in contact with the ground, in order to give it back to the other lower limb when lifting from the ground, so producing a great reduction of the energy needed in the walking activity and at the same time promoting the acquisition of a correct posture.

  • Patent number: 8790285
Abstract: A chest compressor includes a piston (14) that moves in downward and upward strokes, with the piston undergoing a smooth reversal at the bottom of the downward stroke. A compression spring such as a wave spring (60), is positioned to engage the piston only near the end of its downward stroke, to smoothly reverse the piston motion, limit downward force on the patient at the end of the stroke, and avoid a downward pulse due to the momentum of the downwardly-moving piston. A stop (90, 92) is latchable in an inward position to allow reduction in the piston stroke by engaging an outward flange (56) on the piston before the piston has moved fully downward.

  • Patent number: 8777881
Abstract: A handheld massage device includes an actuator mechanism and a massage unit received in an outer housing. The actuator includes a motor, a bearing and a tilting piece having a first shaft coupled with the motor and a second shaft fitted into the bearing. The crank-shaped first and second shafts do not lie on a straight line. The massage unit has a base plate and massage elements mounted on the base plate. The massage elements protrude from one end of the outer housing. The bearing is fitted in the base plate. Because the first and second shafts form an angle therebetween, the base plate is tilted and swings like a conical pendulum. Therefore, the massage elements on the base plate move back and forth along a direction of an axle of the motor, thereby providing kneading and percussion massages on the user's body.

  • Patent number: 8764688
Abstract: A sleeve that provides mechanical stimulation to the arm to prevent bone density loss. A primary goal of this product is to prevent bone density loss that occurs during extended space travel. For one embodiment, only the predefined frequency specifications had to be met (between 40 Hz and 60 Hz). By meeting these frequencies for a duration of 30 minutes the product will theoretically prevent the loss of bone density. Additionally, clinical trials will need to be conducted before this product can be marketed. The product includes of several mechanical vibrators attached to a sleeve. The vibrators are small unbalanced-mass motors which are similar to those found in cell phones. The motors are encased in dome shaped housings designed to reduce lateral vibrations along the arm. The product is controlled using an Arduino board attached to the sleeve that actuates the motors. The motors, in turn, provide the specified frequency to the arm for 30 minutes.

  • Patent number: 8752548
Abstract: A patient ventilation system has a flow regulating and gas mixing arrangement connected to an inspiratory channel of the system from which a gas mixture containing oxygen and at least a second gas is delivered to the system's proximal tubing. The proximal tubing further is connected to an expiratory channel and is connectable to a patient. The system further has at least two gas inlets connected to the flow regulating and mixing arrangement, and a gas identification unit in which the at least second gas supplied to the system via one of the gas inlets can be identified. By actively measuring a value that is dependent on the characteristics of the delivered gas, and by correcting the calibration of the flow regulating and gas mixing arrangement and/or the flow meter(s) based on this value, both safety and flow regulation in the system are enhanced.

  • Patent number: 8740826
Abstract: A device for non-invasively mechanically stimulating bone or muscle includes a vibrational energy generator for applying vibrational energy to a first end of a length of a tissue which includes bone and/or muscle. The vibrational energy is for inducing strain in at least one region within the length of tissue. A restraint is disposed opposite the first end of the length to resist translation of the length during operation of the device and to provide loading to the bone or muscle. A connecting structure couples the restraint to the vibrational energy generator. The device does not require gravity to operate and as a result is expected to have applications in space, such as with astronauts, with those having bone aliments such as bed-ridden patients, persons with osteoporosis or disuse atrophy, athletes, recovering bone cancer patients, and persons with musculoskeletal disorders.

  • Patent number: 8734370
Abstract: A device is disclosed for generating controlled pneumatic pressure to a human body to achieve mucus clearance from the pulmonary system. Controlled pneumatic pressure consisting of individual vibratory pressure and constrictive pressure variations are generated and applied to the thorax to promote mucus clearance. The vibratory pressure variation is channeled to a pressure receiver secured to the upper thorax of the body, and the constrictive pressure variation is channeled to a pressure receiver secured to the lower thorax of the body. The vibratory pressure variation serves to loosen the mucus, while the constrictive pressure variation provides the motive force that promotes mucus expulsion from the pulmonary system.

  • Patent number: 8591438
Abstract: In the walking assist device, defining rigidity of a portion from the user to a first joint as K1 [N/m], rigidity of a portion from the first joint to the second joint as K2 [N/m] and rigidity of a portion from the second joint to one of the feet of a free leg of the user as K31 [N/m], when the user is supported by the support member, they are set as: (K1 +K31)<K2. With this, the assist force can avoid being affected by, in the direction of gravity, vertical displacement of a portion other than the main body of the device and the control accuracy of the assist force is enhanced accordingly, thereby improving the assisting feel sensed by the user P.

  • Patent number: 8591439
Abstract: An extended term resuscitation system includes a plurality of inflatable cuffs adapted to extend around separate portions of the anatomy of a patient (i.e. the chest, abdomen and legs) for enhancing the circulation when inflated/deflated periodically. A primary low-pressure-high-volume air compressor is in fluid communication with each of the cuffs through individual air handlers. The air handlers are formed with an inflation and a deflation diaphragm valve which, under the control of an electronic timer and a pneumatic circuit, connect the respective cuff to the output of the compressor for inflation or to the atmosphere for deflation. A secondary air compressor provides air under suitable pressure to the pneumatic circuit for the control of the diaphragm valves. As an option the operator may change the cyclical rate and cuff pressure. A ventilator provides oxygen to the patient in selected volumes or on demand.
