  • Patent number: 6804088
Abstract: A thin film magnetic head includes a recording pole layer that is divided into a tip portion, a wide rear portion, a flare portion, and a yoke portion as viewed from the air bearing surface (ABS). The tip portion and the wide rear portion directly contact a write gap layer. Part of the wide rear portion has a greater width that the tip portion. The wide rear portion is provided between the tip portion and the flare portion to reduce magnetic reluctance. Accordingly, it is possible to improve the pattern accuracy of the tip portion width by providing the flare portion, which reflects a large quantity of light, far from the ABS, while preventing an increase of the magnetic reluctance.

  • Patent number: 6714379
Abstract: A shroud feature and method for incorporating an airflow shroud feature in a disc drive assembly. The airflow shroud feature is connected to the cover of the disc drive rather than the base plate. When the disc drive cover incorporating the shroud feature is placed on the disc drive, the shroud feature surrounds at least a portion of the circumference of the outer peripheral surface of the disc to reduce turbulence when the disc is operated. The shroud is rigidly connected to the top cover by engagement of the shroud with a physical feature of the top cover. The shroud operably directs air-flow along the peripheral edge of the disc during drive operation when the cover is installed on the base plate.

  • Patent number: 6714387
Abstract: This invention teaches a way for the shield to shield (S1-S2) distance of a magnetic read head to be reduced. The key feature is that the upper and lower dielectric layers D1 and D3, which are normally pure aluminum oxide, have each been replaced by a bilayer dielectric, which consists of aluminum oxide in contact with the shield layer followed by a layer of a high voltage breakdown material. For D1 this layer may be either tantalum oxide or tantalum nitride while for D3 our preferred material has been tantalum oxide. The addition of the two high breakdown layers allows the thickness of the upper and lower dielectric layers to be reduced without having to reduce the S2—S2 voltage difference.

  • Patent number: 6700748
Abstract: In an Integrated Lead Suspension system, it is desired that the stainless steel suspension is grounded to a controlled ground potential. This requires creating a grounding path between the stainless steel suspension and a copper trace layer through a layer of dielectric material that separates the stainless steel suspension and the copper layer. The copper trace layer and subsequently the stainless steel suspension can then be grounded to a controlled ground potential. This invention proposes several methods of creating a ground path between the stainless steel suspension and the copper trace layer.

  • Patent number: 6687086
Abstract: A single reel with magnetic tape wound thereon is housed in a case. A restraining member, for restricting rotation of the reel by moving toward or away from the reel, is urged in a restraining direction by an urging member. The pushing-up portions of a releasing member are inserted into the through holes bored in the reel gear of the reel 2 so that the lower ends can abut a driving gear. The releasing member moves the restraining member in a releasing direction by moving according to the chucking operation of drive-side rotation drive means. In this manner, reel-rotation restraining means allows rotation of the reel when being used and restricts the rotation when not being used. In this construction, each of the through holes is bored between the tooth edges of the reel gear so that the releasing member can perform a reliable releasing operation.

  • Patent number: 6646827
Abstract: A perpendicular magnetic recording head includes a write pole designed to reduce or eliminate problems caused by stray magnetic fields. By positioning a write coil close to the air bearing surface of the recording head, and controlling the geometry of the write pole, the necessity of a return pole to provide a closed magnetic flux path through the write pole and the magnetic recording media is eliminated. The use of an open magnetic path produced by a single write pole reduces or eliminates problems caused by stray magnetic fields which, in conventional perpendicular magnetic recording head designs, travel through the soft magnetic underlayer of the recording media and enter the recording head through the return pole.
