  • Patent number: 4690590
Abstract: To reduce the shearing resistance at the surfaces of the diaphragm, and to decrease the buoyancy force, both of which greatly hamper the positioning of diaphragms or thin sheets in slotted wall suspensions, air bubbles are introduced at the bottom end of the diaphragm during the positioning process. These air bubbles ascend along the vertical surfaces of the diaphragm.

  • Patent number: 4688441
Abstract: A gear assembly comprising two gears and a spring in the form of a C-shaped clip interconnecting the two gears. Two pins are provided on one of the two gears and the spring has two holes, one in each end thereof, whereby the spring can be carried by one gear in a prestressed state by means of the pin-and-hole connection. The other gear has a third pin thereon. The spring has a third hole into which the third pin is inserted. Thus the assembly work can be accomplished simply by resting the second gear on the first gear. An end of the third hole engages with the third pin to create a spring force necessary to provide nonbacklash mating with a third gear.

  • Patent number: 4688444
Abstract: A control device for producing electrical signals which correspond to manual movements of a stick part and which are used for adjustment of a controlled element has a relatively stationary body part with a hand supporting surface and a stick projecting outward from that surface to be embraced by an operator's hand. The stick comprises a laterally swingable outer stick part end-to-end with an inner stick part fixed to the body. A rod-like spring element in a chamber in the stick has an end portion fixed to each stick part to swingably connect the outer stick part of the inner one and bias the outer one to a neutral position. A signal emitting device in the chamber is mounted alongside the spring element and is operatively connected with it.

  • Patent number: 4688834
Abstract: A locking device has a slide accommodated in a stationary casing and spring biased in the direction causing it to project out of said stationary casing. When the slide is retracted into said stationary casing, a locking arm which is pivotally coupled to the slide is turned to a position facing the exposed end of the slide where it catches an engagement member between itself and the end of the slide. The slide can be locked in a retracted state by a cam member. When the slide is released from the locked state by the cam member, the locking arm can be brought away from the end of the slide.

  • Patent number: 4688684
Abstract: A free-standing vertical display system for displaying merchandise, such as beverage containers, at the point of purchase, is described. The system includes a base and one or more trays which are slidably received on a center pole. In a first embodiment a merchandise-bearing tray rests on the merchandise on the tray beneath it. When the tray is empty, it may be stored on four screws protruding from the top of the center pole, allowing the customer to access the lower trays. A second embodiment of the invention provides a spring on the center pole, underneath each tray. When a tray is loaded with merchandise, the spring compresses and the tray rests on the merchandise on the tray beneath it. When a tray is emptied, the spring pushes the tray up, so that merchandise may be removed from the tray below. A third embodiment of the invention provides stationary spacer poles at the periphery of each tray to separate the trays, so that merchandise may be accessed from all trays simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 4687372
Abstract: A method and system of storing and containing existing toxic waste dump sites, to prevent leakage and seepage from the waste site. It involves ascertaining the soil characteristics to determine the moisture impervious layer depth for the soil surrounding the pit site, digging a perimeter trench around the dump site to a depth at least equal to the moisture impervious layer, filling the perimeter trench with a substantially moisture impervious material, placing a well casing within the area defined by the perimeter trench, adjacent to the pit, and placing a drain line below the bottom of the toxic waste site dump pit in fluid communication with the well casing. As a result of this alteration of the water drainage profile within the surrounding soil, the risk of seepage, leakage and drainage of toxic waste into the aquifers is lessened.

  • Patent number: 4687374
Abstract: An apparatus for making a tunnel lining from concrete in a single operation with a tunnel excavator comprises a tunnel lining form consisting of a plurality of tunnel lining form segments and a form front adjacent the tunnel excavator and a tunnel lining circular space between the form and the ground. In order to heat the concrete as it is pumped into the tunnel lining circular space to accelerate hardening, transmitting antennae for electromagnetic radiation are mounted in the tunnel lining form segments and/or the feed pipes for the concrete. Similarly a process for making a tunnel lining from concrete comprises pumping concrete into the tunnel lining circular space and accelerating the hardening of the concrete by heating it with electromagnetic radiation. The tunnel form is rapidly repositioned after the concrete being hardened reaches a sufficient strength.

  • Patent number: 4687238
Abstract: A gate lock is disclosed for use with swinging gates of the chain link type which includes upper and lower hollow cylindrical housings respectively affixed to adjacent vertical elements of swinging gates. A sliding bolt is in vertical sliding and rotatable arrangement within the bore of the upper housing and is movable between an upper, unlocked position and a lower locked position wherein the bottom of the bolt enters the bore of the lower housing. The lower housing includes a plurality of vertically spaced, key positioning plates which are arranged to require insertion and removal of an operating key in angularly offset relationship from the housing axis. The key positioning plates are further designed to axially align the key after insertion whereby the key head can engage a shaped recess in a threaded locking bolt to threadedly engage and lock the sliding bolt of the upper housing within the lower housing.

  • Patent number: 4685837
Abstract: A multi-sided portable trench and pit form system having at least two panels forming each side, each panel releasably interconnectable along the vertical margins of each adjacent panel and side. Elongated rigid braces are also provided which releasably interconnect to and against the sides and spanning the interconnected panels to rigidize the sides. Additionally, the elongated braces also interconnect at their ends to rigidize the preselected relative angular positioning of the sides one to another. The entire assembly forms a barrier or perimeter wall as required within which a user may safely function when working below ground level. An opening may be provided in one panel or between adjacent panels forming a side and having a slideable closure panel to provide working access outside of the enclosure. This modular system is adaptable to variation in the number of sides required, as well as variation in both side width and height.

  • Patent number: 4685347
Abstract: A star wheel is formed with angularly spaced teeth and intervening pockets and is indexed through one step each time a rotatable actuating pin enters one of the pockets. One of the teeth has a significantly greater angular width than the other teeth and has a tip which is periodically engaged by the pin to stop rotation of the pin. To reduce shock resulting from the pin striking the tip of the wide tooth, a slot is formed in the wide tooth to cause part of the outer end portion of the tooth to be resiliently cantilevered on the remaining portion of the tooth and to enable the outer end portion to flex inwardly when the pin moves into engagement with the tip.
