Patent number: 7477965Abstract: A twisted wire actuator, whereby the shortening of the length of a wire or a bundle of wires, as it is twisted, is used to control the motion of an actuated element, achieving sub-micron motion resolution. The control can be performed robotically. The high resolution can be achieved without the use of gears, sliders, or high precision lead screws, thus enabling a simplified actuation system and eliminating sources of friction. The use of wires operating in opposing directions and having oppositely directed rotations significantly reduces the non-linearity effect inherent in twisted wire actuation, resulting in a system having a good level of motion linearity as a function of control input impulse. The use of multiple twisted wires attached to the actuated element at different angles, enables the implementation of robotic systems with multiple degrees of freedom. Several experimental actuators verify these results.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 2004Date of Patent: January 13, 2009Inventor: Moshe Soham

Patent number: 7443395Abstract: Operation of a multi-variable process involves multidimensional representation of the value (p1-p12) of the process variables (P1-P12) according to individual coordinate axes, and an operational envelope (UB,LB) derived from a group of sets of values for the process and quality variables (P1-P12,Q1-Q2) accumulated from multiple, earlier operations of the process, defines an operating zone for the process and quality variables of the process. If the current value (p7) of any process variable (P7) goes outside the envelope, an envelope (UO,LB) for a different, wider grouping of the stored data-sets is displayed at least for the quality variables (Q1-Q2). A series of nested envelopes to provide stepwise enlargement of the operating zone may be provided, but non-nested envelopes can be used where there is clustering of acceptable values of process variables of the stored data-sets. The changes to control variables to bring the values of dependent variables within a best operating range can be determined.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2004Date of Patent: October 28, 2008Assignee: Curvaceous Software LimitedInventors: Robin William Brooks, John Gavin Wilson

Patent number: 7437596Abstract: In building automation architectures, components may be associated through physical communications paths and at a different level through building automation applications. Building automation applications implement control processes for a building function. Due to changing needs, such as a failure of a physical communications path or the addition or removal of components, the building automation application may be more appropriately performed in a different device. By dynamically positioning or determining a processor for implementing a building automation application, an architecture or network may more optimally control building functions, such as by requiring less user input, more rapid response and/or avoiding building function failures.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 2006Date of Patent: October 14, 2008Assignee: Siemens Building Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Norman R. Patent number: 7433760Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide novel controllers for filmmaking and/or animation, as well as systems and methods for their use. In a set of embodiments, a controller has an actuator (e.g., a joystick, etc.) that receives input from a user for controlling an object, such as a camera, a light, an animated character, etc. The input is provided as instructions, which are described according to a reference coordinate system, to a movement system for moving the object within a scene (i.e., relative to other objects within the scene). The controller may include an additional control allowing the user to define an auxiliary coordinate system, such that the input from the user is described according to the auxiliary coordinate system. Alternatively and/or additionally, the controller includes a control for allowing the user to select whether input should be described according to the auxiliary coordinate system or the reference coordinate system.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2005Date of Patent: October 7, 2008Assignee: Accelerated Pictures, Inc.Inventors: Donald Alvarez, Mark Parry

Patent number: 7430456Abstract: Apparatus and method for reference point teaching for an articulated member, such as a robotic arm. An end effector is moved to form a witness mark on a medium at a target location. An updated reference point for the end effector is generated in relation to a detected coordinate of the witness mark. The end effector preferably supports a gage with a tapered probe, and a distal end of the probe contactingly engages the medium to form the witness mark. A vision system preferably detects the position of the witness mark after retraction of the end effector away from the mark. The medium preferably comprises paper, and the witness mark preferably comprises a hole punched therethrough. Alternatively, the medium comprises pressure sensitive paper and the mark is formed by the application of pressure thereto. The gage can comprise two probes that make two spaced apart witness marks, as desired.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 2006Date of Patent: September 30, 2008Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventor: Shawn A. Patent number: 7424642Abstract: A system and method for reintegration of a redundant controller after occurrence of a fault is provided, comprising synchronizing outputs of a primary controller with outputs of secondary controllers. The controller is placed in a different mode of operation in which its output is not used in system control. A meta-controller is activated to drive the primary controller to the same states at which the secondary or redundant controllers operate. A voting mechanism is used to determine a fault in an output to a controlled device. Control of the device using the secondary outputs is effected. The primary controller recalculates the primary output, based upon the primary output; a feedback signal; and, the secondary outputs. Control using the primary output is permitted when the primary output is within an allowable range of the secondary outputs.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2006Date of Patent: September 9, 2008Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations, Inc.Inventors: Mark N.
