  • Patent number: 11851956
Abstract: A retention system for attaching a collar to a pipe. The collar has an internally-disposed groove configured for placement of a ring. The ring is sized such that in one orientation, it can enter the collar between torque-transmitting features into the internally-disposed groove. Once in the groove, the ring may be adjusted such that its aperture is generally aligned with the axis of the collar. In this orientation, the features retain the ring within the groove. A bolt and a pipe may then be placed within the collar from opposite sides. The bolt is attached to the pipe through the ring. Once joined, the collar is joined to the pipe, forming its box end. Such a retention system may be used to join a series of inner pipe members of a dual-member pipe assembly, as in horizontal directional drilling.

  • Patent number: 11846148
Abstract: Systems and methods include a method for using a downhole logging tool. A downhole logging tool is inserted into a well. The downhole logging tool includes a gauge chamber containing gauges, a compressed gas chamber containing compressed gas, a timer powered by a battery, a release sub, and a balloon housing containing a balloon in a deflated state. Data is collected by the gauges of the downhole logging tool during a downward travel of the downhole logging tool. A release point to release compressed gas is determined by the timer based on a travelling speed of the downhole logging tool. The compressed gas is released by the release sub at the release point, inflating the balloon to an inflated state, creating a buoyant force for the downhole logging tool. Additional data is collected by the gauges of the downhole logging tool during an upward travel of the downhole logging tool.

  • Patent number: 11828142
Abstract: In a first scenario, nested darts provide pressure isolation between a space inside a liner assembly below an expansion cone and a well annulus. Increased pressure in this space can be used to push the expansion cone upward and assist the bottom-up expansion of a liner hanger provided at the top of the liner assembly. In a second scenario, an obstruction lands on a seat provided in a seat assembly. Pressure in a space located between the expansion cone and the seat assembly is increased such that an upward force acts on the expansion cone to expand the liner hanger. The second scenario may be utilized by itself. Alternatively, the second scenario may be utilized as a contingency method if the first scenario has failed.

  • Patent number: 11821283
Abstract: A technique facilitates use of a liner hanger in a borehole. A port free hydraulic unibody system including an outer structure having a tubing hanger portion and a packer portion mounted about a mandrel may be constructed so as to avoid the creation of leak paths. A seal system may be employed between the mandrel and the surrounding outer structure to ensure sealing engagement therebetween. The mandrel has a port free section on the downhole side of the seal system, and this port free section is maintained during, for example, actuation of the tubing hanger portion so as to prevent formation of leak paths. An actuator may be located along the mandrel and may be configured to initiate actuation of hanger slips mounted along the tubing hanger portion. An anti-preset mechanism positioned along the mandrel works in cooperation with the actuator to prevent premature actuation of the hanger slips.

  • Patent number: 11795768
Abstract: There is disclosed a torque transfer apparatus for a mineral drilling tool used in a downhole assembly of a drill string. The drilling tool has a downhole drill bit and one or more uphole drill bits spaced apart from the downhole drill bit, with the torque transfer apparatus being located between them. The apparatus has an axial bore therethrough for fluid flow and comprises first and second members being rotatably joined to each other. The apparatus rotationally couples and transfers torque between the first and second members when a torque difference between torque on the downhole drill bit and torque on the uphole drill bit is below a threshold torque value. The apparatus disengages the rotational coupling while the torque difference exceeds the threshold torque value. Abstract: Systems and methods are described for determining the lag time and origin of particles in entrained in a mud stream. A size and shape of the particles may be evaluated at the surface with a visual inspection system, which permits a settling rate to be determined for each of the particles in a non-Newtonian mud stream. Together with an analysis of the pumping schedule, mud properties, trajectory of the wellbore and other fluid dynamics associated with a wellbore operation, an origin of the each of the particles from within the wellbore may be determined. At least one operational parameter for the wellbore operation may be adjusted based on the determined origin of the particles. For example, a clean-out procedure may be initiated if it is determined that particles are settling in an undesirable location in the wellbore.
