A patch antenna has a substrate, a resonant metal plate at one side of the substrate, and a ground plane at the other opposite side of the substrate. Two feed pins are used to couple the antenna to other circuitry. The feed pins pass through the substrate and holes in at the ground plane. The feed pins are physically disconnected from both the resonant metal plate and the ground plane. The feed pins are capacitively coupled to the resonant metal plate to provide an electronic connection between other circuitry and the patch antenna.

A tunable balun can be used to compensate for amplitude imbalances in a multi-antenna radio, and/or an antenna agnostic feed network can be used to improve isolation in a single antenna radio. The balun can be integrated directly into the antenna. The balun can control the amplitude of each signal to ensure they are equal, resulting in greater transmitter interference cancellation.

    Abstract: A reconfigurable antenna comprises a panel having a liquid metal pump coupled to a power supply; a liquid metal reservoir in fluid communication with the pump; one or more channels for transporting the liquid metal, each of the one or more channels having a proximal end in fluid communication with the pump, each of the one or more channels having a vent at a distal end, wherein application of power to the pump moves the liquid metal into or out of the channels thereby reconfiguring the antenna. The pump may be a pneumatic pump or a magnetohydrodynamic pump, and a layer of a phosphonic acid may be included on the liquid metal-bearing surfaces of the channels. The phosphonic acid may be decylphosphonic acid (DPA), fluorobenzylphosphonic acid (FPA), or difluorobenzylphosphonic acid (DFPA), and one or more sensors may be coupled to the panel for determining the position of the liquid metal in the channels.
