  • Patent number: 5297804
Abstract: A sealing system for a circumferential gap between an inner component and a concentric outer component. The inner component moves in relation to the outer component essentially only linearly back and forth. The two components rotate together around a common axis. There is a groove around the inner component. A centrifugal seal is secured in the groove by axial resilience. An axial lip around one side of the seal rests against at least one of the groove's sides. There is at least one radial lip along the outer circumference of the seal. The centrifugal force, increasingly exerted on a hydraulic fluid as the rotation of the components accelerates, causes the seal to expand radially as well until the lip or lips along its outer circumference come into contact with the inner surface of the outer component, sealing off the gap. The axial lip and the radial lip define a diagonal plane at an angle of 15.degree. to 75.degree. to the axis of rotation.

  • Patent number: 5221097
Abstract: A sealing system is associated with an engine having two engine parts to be sealed, and includes a gasket situated between the engine parts. The engine parts include at least one annular groove around a hole to be sealed, and the gasket includes a bead extending outwardly from the gasket around the hole. The size o the bead is greater than that of the annular groove. When the gasket is tightened between the engine parts, the bead is compressed inside the groove and deforms to securely seal between the gasket and the engine parts. As a result, even if the engine part is slightly moved, the gasket can securely seal between the engine parts.

  • Patent number: 5139276
Abstract: A canted coil spring assembly includes a plurality of coils having major and minor axes and canted along a center line defined by an intersection of the major and minor axes. The coils are interconnected in a manner forming a radial gartertype canted coil spring and structure are provided for non-invasively supporting the plurality of coils in an orientation suitable for radial loading of the radial garter-type canted coil spring and for controlling the resilient characteristics of the radial garter-type canted coil spring.

  • Patent number: 4936591
Abstract: A unitized seal includes a first seal casing having a plastically deformable radially-extending unitizing flange and a second seal casing having at least one axially extending projection. The projection has an engagement surface which confronts the unitizing flange for engagement therewith. Upon installation of the seal, the projection axially deforms the unitizing flange in a localized area about the projection. Upon initial rotation of the seal the projection further axially deforms the remainder of the unitizing flange within one rotation. This arrangement minimizes the production of metal chips and/or abraded elastomeric particles during seal break-in and further minimizes resistance to seal rotation during break-in.
