  • Patent number: 6164920
Abstract: A medical perfusion system for use in connection with the medical treatment of a patient is provided with a first type of perfusion device in the form of a blood pump adapted to pump blood through a fluid conduit connected to the patient and a second type of perfusion device in the form of a sensing device adapted to sense a condition and generate a sensing signal relating to the condition. The perfusion system also includes an electrical power network having an electrical power line, means for selectively connecting the perfusion devices to the electrical power network, and a controller with an input device for accepting control commands from an operator. The perfusion system could also include a control device, such as a pump, a plurality of sensing devices, and means for specifying the sensing device that the control device should be accept feedback from.

  • Patent number: 6086331
Abstract: A safety pumping system including a pump (19) and an electric motor (15) is adapted to be immersed in a fluid (11) contained in a tank (10). The electric motor and the pump are interconnected by a driving shaft (23). The electric motor is enclosed in a motor housing, which defines an inner space (18). The motor housing is surrounded by an outer shell or jacket (14), which defines an outer space (17) between the outer shell and the motor housing. In order to reduce the risk of explosions when the pumping system is immersed in an inflammable liquid, protective gas, such as nitrogen, at a superatmospheric pressure is supplied to the inner space (18) of the motor housing (15). Protective gas is also supplied to the outer space (17) defined by the outer shell of jacket (14). The gas pressure within the inner space (18) preferably exceeds the gas pressure within the outer space (17), which preferably exceeds the atmospheric pressure.

  • Patent number: 5924847
Abstract: A vapor compression refrigeration system, such as a water chiller, uses a centrifugal compressor with magnetic bearings and a refrigerant, specifically HFC-227ea and HFC-227ca, to minimize enthalpy rise across the compressor and/or provide compression in a single stage for low cooling capacity. Magnetic bearings eliminate the problem caused by lubricated bearings to support rotating structure during normal compressor operation. The centrifugal compressor can be configured with a pre-defined static surge line.

  • Patent number: 5915927
Abstract: A plunger pump includes a piston which is driven for reciprocatory motion and associated with a check valve. A space within a cylinder is partitioned by a piston 1p into a first space A which communicates with a discharge port 1ep and a second space B which communicates with a suction port 1ip. To reduce the peak value of a fluctuation in the suction pressure, a third port 2ip communicating with the first space A is added, and the suction port 1ip and the third port 2ip are connected in common to a suction line Pin through check valves 20 and 19, respectively. The first space A has a diameter greater than the diameter of the piston while the second space B has a diameter which is comparable to the diameter of the piston and hence is less than that of the first space A. On the forward stroke of the piston, a braking liquid is drawn into the second space from the suction line Pin.

  • Patent number: 5902094
Abstract: A pressure washer is powered by a prime mover, e.g., an electric motor or an internal combustion engine, and has a flow control valve. The valve has a housing containing a piston assembly and the assembly has a mechanism coupled to it for controlling prime mover power. The piston assembly includes a first piston sealing against the housing and dividing the housing interior into two chambers. Such first piston is spring-biased to a first position during periods when no output flow is being demanded from the washer. The assembly also has a second piston spring-biased to seal against the first piston during periods of no flow. When flow is demanded by opening the nozzle, the pressure in the second chamber diminishes. And when the difference between the pressure in the second chamber and that in the first chamber exceeds a predetermined value, the assembly shifts to a second position, causing the mechanism to actuate the prime mover.

  • Patent number: 5897304
Abstract: A flow-through filling pump for receiving a liquid supply and discharging a predetermined amount of the liquid therefrom includes a housing defining a supply chamber and a discharge chamber and a reciprocating piston positioned in the housing intermediate the supply and discharge chambers. The piston is movable along an axial liquid flow path defined by the chamber, between a fill position and a discharge position. A drive assembly is operably connected to the piston to drive the piston between the fill and discharge positions. A seal member extends between the piston and the housing to isolate the supply and the discharge chambers and at least a portion of the piston from a portion of the housing at which the drive assembly operably connects to the piston. The pump includes a non-return type inlet valve mounted to the piston. The inlet valve has a biasedly mounted valve element, which is biased to the closed position.

  • Patent number: 5885061
Abstract: A pump for compression of air includes a first inner stationary cylinder (1) arranged a second displaceable cylinder (2). A piston (3) arranged for reciprocating motion together with the first cylinder (1) divides the interior space of the first cylinder (1) into a first and a second chamber (8,9). A third cylinder (15) surrounding the second cylinder (2) is formed with a fourth chamber (16) in communication, via a passage (17), with a third chamber (12) in the second cylinder (2) and, via an inlet valve (19), with the surrounding atmosphere. Displacement of the piston rod (4) in one direction forces the air in the third chamber (12) into the first and second chambers (8,9) with resulting pressure increase in said chambers (8,9). At the same time, air is sucked into the fourth chamber (16). Upon displacement of the piston rod (4) in the opposite direction, the air in the fourth chamber (16) is forced into the third chamber (12) and further into the first chamber (8).

  • Patent number: 5865603
Abstract: A snap-over toggle linkage valve actuating mechanism for alternately opening and closing a gas inlet valve and a gas outlet valve utilizes a plurality of stiff compression coil springs of an axial length preferably less than four times the coil turn diameter mounted between oppositely facing end plates, with the compression coil ends carried by circular bosses symmetrically positioned on the faces of the opposing faces of the end plates bearing the coil springs and constituting a second toggle link for the snap-over valve actuating mechanism. A gas pressure and a vent valve assembly consists of a valve actuator rod operatively coupled to the first toggle link and terminating in a right angle valve actuator plate fixed thereto at an off center lateral position. The valve actuator plate detachably mounts a valve stem of a poppet type vent valve whose large diameter plug seats in a chamfered valve seat radially outward of a combined guide plate and valve seat.
