  • Patent number: 6173175
Abstract: The provisioning process of the present invention first determines the average number of units of the system resource that are held per call. This parameter is a function of the call model and call-related event holding times. The average number of units is used, along with the Busy Hour Call Attempts to determine the holding rate, Rresource, of that particular call-related event to be allocated memory. The holding rate is then used by ┌Rresource +7{square root over (Rresource)}┐ to determine the number of resources required to be allocated to the call-related event.

  • Patent number: 6173164
Abstract: A method and apparatus for wide range automatic frequency control. A control signal indicating a frequency within one of a plurality of frequency bands is received by an oscillator. In response, the oscillator generates a tuning signal having the indicated frequency. Based on the tuning signal, receive logic receives an input signal to obtain a sequence of values. Compare logic compares the sequence of values to a predetermined pattern. If the sequence of values does not match the predetermined pattern, frequency control logic outputs a different control signal to the oscillator to adjust the frequency of the tuning signal to another one of the plurality of frequency bands. Another input signal is received to obtain a new set of values and the new set of values is compared the predetermined pattern.

  • Patent number: 6169887
Abstract: Receivers (201, 202) within a base station (101) receive a transmission from a remote unit (114). The received signal is delayed a first amount by first delay circuitry (203), and a second amount by second delay circuitry (204). During despreading, a delayed input signal is despread with a Pseudo-Random (PN) code. The system time utilized by the PN generators (213, 214) is delayed a third time period by third and fourth delaying circuitry (215, 216).

  • Patent number: 6169885
Abstract: A battery powered radio device includes a transmitter, a control circuit, and a lockout circuit. The transmitter transmits radio communications and the transmitter includes a power amplifier which generates an amplified radiofrequency output signal. More particularly, the power amplifier uses both a positive supply voltage and a negative bias voltage for operation wherein the negative bias voltage is less than a supply ground voltage. The control circuit enables the power amplifier during transmission, and the control circuit includes a switch coupled in series between a positive supply voltage and the power amplifier. The switch is activated in response to a transmit activation signal when the negative bias voltage is coupled to the power amplifier. The lockout circuit prevents activation of the switch in response to the transmit activation signal when the negative bias voltage is not coupled to the power amplifier.

  • Patent number: 6169897
Abstract: A mobile communications system which provides a mobile subscriber with local information related to the area where his/her mobile terminal is located. A link list page is compiled in a URL list server by collecting the URLs of various home pages containing local information, and a local representative URL is assigned to the compiled link list page. A URL retrieving unit receives an area identification signal from a radio base station, and retrieves the local representative URL associated with the received area identification signal. A representative URL transmission unit then transmits the local representative URL retrieved by the URL retrieving unit to the URL list server, thus making access to the link list page stored therein. A list transmission unit, disposed in the URL list server, retrieves the link list page that corresponds to the local representative URL received from the representative URL transmission unit, and it returns the retrieved local URL list to the mobile terminal.

  • Patent number: 6167117
Abstract: A method and apparatus for assisting voice-dialing using a model of an individual's calling behavior to improve recognition of an input name corresponding a desired telephone number. When the individual picks up a telephone, activity is initiated in a neural network model of the individual's calling behavior that predicts the likelihood that different numbers will be called, given such predictors as the day of the week and the time of day. The model is constructed by training the neural network with data from the user's history of making and receiving telephone calls. The auditory output from an automatic speech recognition system and the output from the user model are integrated together so as to select the number that is most likely to be the number desired by the speaker. The system can also provide automatic directory assistance, by speaking the number aloud rather than dialing it. In one version, the system is a personal directory for an individual maintained on that individual's personal computer.

  • Patent number: 6167286
Abstract: A base transceiver station operating a sectorized cell of a cellular radio system operates a plurality of narrow uplink main receive beams, and one or a plurality of uplink diversity received beams. A scanning means scans each of the uplink main receive beams to locate a communications channel on the main uplink beams. A diversity receiver receives a diverse beam signal from the diverse beam(s), which is compared with a beam signal received from a main uplink beam, and the main beam signal from the main beam, or a diverse beam signal from the diversity antenna is selected, depending on the comparative signal to noise ratio and signal strength of the main beam signal and diversity beam signal.

  • Patent number: 6167287
Abstract: A character code such as Chinese characters desired to be used in a portable cellular phone 101 is received from an external information terminal 111. A display character data set corresponding the thus-received character code is also received from the external information terminal 111 and is stored in a storage section 105. At this time, only the data which are not stored in the storage section 105 are stored through a checking operation by checking means 107. The control section 106 sends the thus-received character code to a display control section 104. The display control section 104 reads from the storage section 105 a display character data set corresponding to the thus-received character code and displays the display character data set on a display 103. Further, the thus-received character code is stored in a storage section 102 while a telephone number is added to the character code. If necessary, the character code is deleted by means of deletion means 109.

  • Patent number: 6167250
Abstract: A method of obtaining tariff rates on a plurality of candidate service providers accessible to a roaming mobile subscriber for use in choosing the most suitable candidate service provider in a visited area. The method includes initiating registration by the mobile subscriber to a first candidate service provider. A request for subscriber's profile information is made by the first candidate service provider to the subscriber's home service provider. Additionally, the first candidate service provider sends the intended tariff rate to be charged to the subscriber to the home provider. The home provider determines which other candidate providers are accessible by the subscriber and requests tariff information regarding these providers. The home provider may then determine the most suitable provider based on the received tariff information e.g. the lowest tariff.

  • Patent number: 6163691
Abstract: A radio communication system is disclosed, wherein caller identification information is sent to called radios prior to the initiation of voice communications. The called radio's current checked-in cell sends call set up messages to the called radio and receives a response from the called radio. The cell then sends page information comprising the calling, or source, radio's identification. Voice communications are established immediately following the page data transmission. The called user is notified of the page information and can access the page message to determine which radio initiated the incoming call.
