  • Patent number: 5999799
Abstract: A method and apparatus for preventing the loss of a remote control input device used with a stationary device provides the stationary device with a transmitter and a signal generator that generates signals transmitted by the transmitter. The remote control input device communicates wirelessly with the stationary device, and has a wireless signal receiver that receives the signals from the signal generator, and a distance warning circuit. A distance warning output signal is produced by the distance warning circuit when the input device is beyond a specified distance from the stationary device, as a function of the signals received by the wireless signal receiver. The remote control input device also has an indicator that produces a human-perceptible distance warning signal in response to the production of the distance warning output signal by the distance warning circuit.

  • Patent number: 5991613
Abstract: The method and arrangement is for controlling a radio receiver. The arrangement has a central processor (DECT-C), a device (RSSI-C) for measuring the field strength of received signals, a threshold value generator (TH-C) and two antennas (A1, A2). The central processor (DECT-C) carries out method steps configured in such a way that different procedures (P1, P2) are realized to activate one of a plurality of antennas (A1, A2) of the radio receiver as a function of measured field strength values (RSSI1) of received signals and as a function of overshooting or undershooting of a threshold value (TH0).

  • Patent number: 5966666
Abstract: A frequency synthesizer consists of a voltage-controlled oscillator and a frequency division and distribution section. The frequency division and distribution section, which splits an oscillation signal of the voltage-controlled oscillator into a transmission modulation local oscillation signal and a reception second local oscillation signal while frequency-dividing the oscillation signal of the voltage-controlled oscillator, includes two pairs of frequency dividers and two switches. The frequency division numbers of the two pairs of frequency dividers are so set as to accommodate all the combinations of mobile communications systems and the transmission modulation local oscillation signal/reception second local oscillation signal. The two switches are switched in accordance with a mobile communications system for which a mobile transceiver is operating. The two local oscillation signals are input to a quadrature modulator and a quadrature demodulator, respectively.

  • Patent number: 5953667
Abstract: In a cellular radio network in which mobile stations roam, in addition to location updating of each mobile station with the accuracy of one location area, a so-called temporary subscriber-specific paging area is determined. Each mobile station initiates the determining of the temporary paging area in the subscriber data base of the cellular radio network after being located in a cell for a sufficiently long period. The temporary paging area is smaller than the location area (e.g., one cell and possibly at least one adjacent cell), and thus the paging of a mobile station can be focused on a small area, i.e., the temporary paging area. It is thus unnecessary to page over the entire location area, and paging time can be reduced and capacity of the cellular radio network spared.

  • Patent number: 5940746
Abstract: An apparatus (304) for scanning among a plurality of channels in a radio communication system (300) includes receive circuitry (310) and control circuitry (312). The receive circuitry (310) is capable of being tuned to any one of the plurality of channels and measures reception strength of the tuned channel. The control circuitry (312) controls the receive circuitry (310) to scan through all of the plurality of channels one at a time. The control circuitry (312) stores a first reading of a measured reception strength of the tuned channel before powering off the receive circuitry (310). The control circuitry (312) stores a second reading of a measured reception strength of the tuned channel after powering the receive circuitry (310) back on.

  • Patent number: 5937335
Abstract: A transmission and reception method and apparatus is capable of supplying local oscillation frequencies for upconversion and downconversion, as well as carrier frequencies for modulation and demodulation by utilizing only one local oscillator. The apparatus includes a reference signal generator for generating a reference signal, and a phase locked loop for locking the output of the reference signal generator to a predetermined frequency. A signal generator generates a signal in response to the output provided from the phase locked loop, and provides the signal to phase shifters in modulation and demodulation circuits. A first frequency multiplier multiplies the output of the signal generator, a first band pass filter band pass filters the output of the first frequency multiplier, and a first amplifier amplifies the output of the first band pass filter and provides the amplified result to an upconversion mixer.

  • Patent number: 5937337
Abstract: A technique for reducing FM intrusion in an AM section of an AM/FM receiver. In one embodiment, a first switch is provided between an FM tuner filter circuit and an AM tuner circuit. A second switch is provided between the FM tuner circuit and a reference potential. When the receiver is in an FM mode, the first switch is closed so that a tuning voltage can be applied to the FM tuner circuit, and the second switch is open to prevent the tuning voltage from being affected by the reference potential. When the receiver is switched to the AM mode, the first switch is open to prevent intermodulation product signals generated by the FM tuner circuit from reaching the AM tuner circuit, and the second switch is closed to connect the FM tuner circuit to the reference potential. By connecting the FM tuner circuit to the reference potential when the receiver is in the AM mode, the tuning of the FM tuner circuit is shifted out of the FM bandwidth, thus eliminating intermodulation products at the AM frequencies.

  • Patent number: 5937352
Abstract: The present invention includes a satellite based telecommunications system having an earth station network which enables user terminals to remain registered with a single visitor location register independent of satellite movement so long as the terminal remains within a fixed geographic location area. The preferred embodiment includes multiple earth stations which communicate with user terminals via coverage satellites. Each user terminal is registered with a single visitor location register. As the user passes between location areas, the user terminal re-registers at a new associated visitor location register. Earth stations and mobile-services switching center/visitor location registers (MSC/VLRs) are interconnected along a dedicated earth station network link. Communications data is passed along the earth station network link between MSC/VLRs and earth stations in a compressed and/or encoded format.

  • Patent number: 5918164
Abstract: A mean value of a received signal level is calculated by a mean value computing unit, a product of multiplying this received signal mean level by a prescribed ratio is calculated by a threshold computing unit and used as a first threshold value, and when the received signal level drops below this first threshold value, communication is performed by making a switch to an antenna that receives signals at a received signal level that is higher than the first threshold value. Switching of receiving antennas is not made when the received signal mean level calculated by the mean value computing unit falls below a second threshold value. This allows antenna switching to be performed in accordance with changes in the received signal level and prevents unnecessary antenna switching from being made when the level falls below the second threshold value.

  • Patent number: 5909652
Abstract: In a first PHS terminal, a system calling code for identifying a system in which the first PHS terminal is registered and a slave ID number for discriminating the first PHS terminal are stored in advance in an ID chip. While a user is out, he or she sets the ID chip in a second PHS terminal which does not have the same system calling code as that of the first PHS terminal. When the user performs an operation for peer-to-peer communication on the first PHS terminal, the second PHS terminal is called using a controlling physical slot. The second PHS terminal is informed that it is called by discriminating a system calling code and a PS calling number of the physical slot on the basis of the system calling code of the ID chip, and then transmits a response signal to the first PHS terminal based on the system calling code and PS calling number of the ID chip. Thus, peer-to-peer communication can be performed even between radio communication terminals which do not have the same system calling code.

  • Patent number: 5898929
Abstract: The present invention time and frequency synchronizes a plurality of private radio base stations operating in the coverage area of a land mobile communications network. The mobile network's control channels are used to derive a reference signal. A mobile terminal uses the reference signal to become synchronized both in time and frequency with the mobile network. Any of the private radio base stations that is linked in a traffic connection with the mobile terminal is synchronized with the mobile terminal. Consequently, the private radio base stations are indirectly synchronized with each other and also with the mobile communications network.
