Patent number: 4608885Abstract: A power transmission combines a continuously variable belt drive in series relation with a multi-ratio gear arrangement between the transmission input and output shafts. The gear arrangement can be selectively changed between low and high ratios. In each gear ratio, the belt drive ratio is controlled from an underdrive ratio to an overdrive ratio to thereby provide two continuously variable drive ranges to effect an increase in output speed. A selectively operable transition clutch, controlling a chain drive disposed in parallel with the belt and gear drives, is provided to maintain power transmission between the input and output shafts during a ratio change in the gear arrangement while the belt drive ratio is changed from overdrive to underdrive.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1983Date of Patent: September 2, 1986Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Erkki A. Patent number: 4597313Abstract: A hydraulic control for an automatic transmission has a throttle valve providing a control pressure which is used in part to determine the transmission shift pattern. The throttle valve has a control area which is normally connected to exhaust. A solenoid responsive to the energizing of a high load engine accessory is operable to close the control area exhaust thereby causing the throttle valve to acknowledge the change in engine power available for vehicle drive. The throttle valve control pressure is thus changed to provide a signal more closely related to the engine torque available.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 1983Date of Patent: July 1, 1986Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: James F. Patent number: 4597311Abstract: A final speed-reduction gearing assembly is mounted within a trans-axle casing which carries an output drive pinion shaft thereon, the gearing assembly comprising a ring gear in mesh with a drive pinion integral with the drive pinion shaft, and a differential gear unit integrally connected at the outer case thereof with the ring gear, the outer case of the unit being rotatably supported at the opposite ends thereof by first and second axially spaced bearings which are respectively mounted on first and second carrier portions of the trans-axle casing. A retainer member is arranged to fasten the first bearing to the first carrier portion of the casing and to be radially detachable for adjustment of a preload axially acting on the bearings, and an annular shim plate is disposed between the first bearing and the first carrier portion in such a way as to be removable radially for adjustment of the preload.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1983Date of Patent: July 1, 1986Assignee: Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Yoshiki Takeda

Patent number: 4592251Abstract: A two speed drive comprising: a driving member; a rotatable driven member coaxially positioned relative to the driving member; a planetary gear system rotatable with the driving member and with the driven member for providing in one condition a non-reducing speed drive and for providing in a second condition a speed reducing drive therebetween, the gear system including a sun gear drivingly engaging the driving member, a ring gear mounted for rotation about said driving member, and a plurality of planetary gears interconnecting the sun gear and the ring gear, the driven member attached to and carried with the planetary gears; and a electromagnetic clutch, operable in a first mode for simultaneously driving the sun gear and the ring gear in the one condition to establish a non-reducing speed drive and operable in a second mode to rotationally lock the ring gear for driving the driven member through the sun gear and the planetary gears at a speed less than the speed of the driving member.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 1983Date of Patent: June 3, 1986Assignee: Canadian Fram LimitedInventor: Murray R. Patent number: 4590820Abstract: An apparatus as described for transmitting rotational energy from a prime mover having a first shaft to a torque load driven by a second shaft through a spur gear train. A splined shaft (30) having a sun gear (32) at one end is coupled to the prime mover. The sun gear (32) meshes spur-wise with three compound star gears (50). These star gears are positioned at approximately the same distance from the axis of the splined shaft. The star gears (50) drive a second sun gear (56) carried at the end of a second quill shaft (54) which is adapted to be connected to the torque load. Preferably the sun gears and the star gears are fully crowned and machined to have a high contact ratio such that at least two pairs of gear teeth of each mesh are substantially in contact at all times. Because one end of each quill shaft is supported by the compound star gears, the pitch circles of the associated sun gear and star gears are substantially tangent to each other thereby minimizing vibration, noise, and stress.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1983Date of Patent: May 27, 1986Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventor: James C. Patent number: 4541308Abstract: The hydraulic control circuit for an automatic transmission includes solenoid-operated clutch pressure valves which selectively connect line pressure to the selected clutch as the winding of the solenoids are energized and de-energized by an electronic control system. A solenoid feed valve and feedback valve operate to connect line pressure to the input port of the several clutch actuator valves, provided the clutch pressures are within certain limits. If these limits are exceeded, line pressure is disconnected from the actuator valves and is applied, instead, automatically and without respect to electronic control, to the clutches that produce a predetermined gear ratio. A coast control valve operates to regulate pressure to a servo that is pressurized at a lower level for low gear ratio operation and at a higher level for reverse drive operation. The coast control valve vents the servo if either of the clutches that produce the predetermined speed ratio are pressurized.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1982Date of Patent: September 17, 1985Assignee: Ford Motor CompanyInventors: Dennis W. Patent number: 4541305Abstract: A speed reducer device having a rotatably driven input shaft, a plurality of elongated planetary rollers disposed around the axis of the rotatably driven input shaft, a plurality of cylindrical output connection rings coaxial with the input shaft and within which the planetary rollers are positioned, and means to press the rotatably driven input shaft, the planetary rollers, and the cylindrical output connection rings together so that when the input shaft is rotated, the planetary rollers and the connection rings rotate without slipping. Each planetary roller is formed from first and second coaxial integral rollers which revolve and rotate within the space defined by the rotatably driven input shaft and the cylindrical output connection rings. The output connection rings comprise first and second output connection rings, wherein the first and second rollers rotate and revolve within the first and second output connection rings, respectively.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1983Date of Patent: September 17, 1985Assignee: Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd.Inventors: Takafumi Hamabe, Hirozo Imai, Hikoyoshi Hara

Patent number: 4527447Abstract: An automatic mechanical change gear transmission system (10) is provided. The transmisssion (12) is a splitter type comprising a main section (48) connected in series with a blocked splitter type auxiliary section (50). The auxiliary section blockers (172) and clutch members (164) are provided with ramps (218, 220, 222, 224) which will tend to align the blockers and ramps in a nonblocking condition under the influence of biasing spring (178) if the main section is in neutral. A control unit (38) receives input signals and commands transmission shifts in a sequence including shifting the main section into neutral and shifting the auxiliary section to a new ratio during each shift procedure.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1982Date of Patent: July 9, 1985Assignee: Eaton CorporationInventor: Elmer A.
