    Abstract: The present invention is intended to control the color temperature of white exhibited by a liquid crystal display device. White is produced when light waves emitted through pixels associated with three colors of red, green, and blue have maximum intensities. The amounts of light emitted through the respective pixels are controlled by differentiating the shapes of the pixel electrodes disposed at the respective pixels from one another. Thus, the color temperature of white is controlled. Otherwise, the shapes of interceptive films disposed at the respective pixels are differentiated from one another in order to control light waves emitted through the respective pixels. Thus, the color temperature of white is controlled. The interceptive film may be shaped like the pixel electrode. Otherwise, the interceptive film may be realized with an interceptive pattern other than that of the pixel electrode or one of openings bored in a black matrix.

    Abstract: Disclosed is an LCD apparatus having a reduced size and weight. The LCD apparatus includes a bottom chassis having a bottom surface and first to fourth sidewalls. The sidewall of the bottom chassis includes a supporting member for preventing a light guiding plate from being moved and a fixing boss for fixing an optical sheet. The bottom chassis includes a lamp insertion portion for receiving a lamp unit, which is disposed on the third and fourth sidewalls of the bottom chassis. The bottom chassis receives a reflecting plate, the light guiding plate and the optical sheet. A mold frame is coupled to the bottom chassis to fix the reflecting plate, the light guiding plate and the optical sheet to the bottom chassis. A display unit disposed on the mold frame is fixed to the mold frame by a top chassis coupled to the mold frame. Accordingly, a bottom mold frame for receiving a backlight assembly is removed, so that it is able to reduce a cost of the LCD apparatus and a weight thereof.

The retardation layer includes a plurality of steps having different heights. A second electrode is disposed on the second substrate. The second electrode includes a plurality of sub-electrodes, the plurality of sub-electrodes being one-to-one corresponding to the plurality of steps. The width of the sub-electrode is smaller than the width of the step corresponding to the sub-electrode. A gap is provided between two adjacent sub-electrodes. One edge of the gap is aligned with a step point of two adjacent steps. A liquid crystal is filled in a space between the retardation layer and the second substrate.

In this way, an electric field component resulting in disordered rotation of liquid crystal molecules is located in the non-transmitting area of the pixel units.

This kind of asymmetrical black matrix layer not only best prevents lowering the pixel aperture ratio, but also improves color shift of images when light goes through pixels of low transmittance as pixels of high transmittance are turned off.
