  • Patent number: 8206449
Abstract: An intervertebral disc placement system includes a multi part intervertebral disc, such as a mobile core disc, and an associated placement instrument. The placement instrument holds the disc securely with the disc endplates angled for ease of placement of the disc into an intervertebral disc space and quickly releases the implant within the disc space. The disc includes upper and lower plates having notches in inner surfaces for engagement of the placement instrument. The placement instrument has a rotatable key configured to fit into the first and second notches to grasp the disc from the interior and eliminate the need for an external grasping mechanism which could interfere with disc placement.

  • Patent number: 8206423
Abstract: A device for introduction into a body in a straight configuration and assuming within the body a predefined curved configuration, includes an elongated element formed from a number of segments interconnected so as to form effective hinges therebetween. When the elongated element is confined to a straight state, the effective hinges transfer compressive forces from each segment to the next so that the elongated element can be pushed to advance it through a conduit. When the elongated element is not confined to a straight state, the effective hinges allow deflection of each segment relative to adjacent segments until abutment surfaces of the segments come into abutment, thereby defining a fully flexed state of the elongated element with a predefined curved configuration. The device can be produced with a wide range of two-dimensional and three-dimensional curved forms, and has both medical and non-medical applications.

  • Patent number: 8206399
Abstract: An intervertebral joint prosthesis having a ball component (22) for engagement with a first vertebra (26) and a trough component (24) for engagement with a second vertebra (27) adjacent to the first vertebra is disclosed. The trough component (24) includes a generally concave surface (50) having a substantially flat portion (52). When the ball component (22) and the trough component (24) are engaged to their respective vertebrae, the ball component (72) and the trough component (24) engage each other, permitting rotation and translation of the vertebrae with respect to each other. Both components include a flange (34,56) for engaging a vertebra. The invention also contemplates a method for and a tool for use in implanting a two-piece intervertebral joint prosthesis.
