  • Patent number: 4877470
Abstract: Non-woven, bias laid fabrics, where the various fabric layers are held together by external means, such as stitching, and wherein, preferably, at least two of the layers are formed at an angle of from 30.degree. to 150.degree. relative to the long axis of the fabric, are formed by directing at least two pluralities of yarns back and forth across the width of the forming fabric, to be wrapped around or mounted on a series of needles formed on a moving conveyor, one conveyor being placed on either side and moving in the direction of the long axis of the fabric. Speed of movement of the yarns can be determined by the speed of movement of the mechanism for the machine operated to hold the various fabric layers together; preferably said machine mechanism moves more slowly near the ends of each cycle, so that yarn carriers are similarly slowed at either end of the forming fabric width, aiding in making successive courses of yarn lie parallel to each other without the necessity for extra equipment.

  • Patent number: 4816103
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming corrugated plywood composites is disclosed. The apparatus includes a fixed mold component having a corrugated surface and a series of movable mold components having complemental corrugated surfaces movable toward and away from the fixed surface. Movable mold components are hingedly in connected and each such component is associated with a linear motor. By sequentially activating the linear motors each movable mold section is pivotally advanced in a first direction toward the fixed mold component the opposite side of the movable mold component being pivoted toward the fixed mold component when the next adjacent section is advanced into clamping position. High tensile strength low coefficient of friction fabric webs are interposed between the surfaces of the mold and the composite material to be corrugated.

  • Patent number: 4812193
Abstract: A fastener element is ejection molded from an engineering resin of a type that will bond to potting resin used for securing the fastener element within a cavity formed within a panel of composite material. The fastener element includes flow control disks spaced apart along a stem portion between end portions. Flats are formed on opposite sides of the flow control disks, below fill and vent openings. Resin introduced into the fill hole travels down to the bottom of the cavity and around the fastener element and fills the cavity from the bottom up, so that the presence of resin at the vent opening will indicate that the cavity has been filled with resin and does not include an airspace or void.

  • Patent number: 4812189
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for joining films by heat sealing, where these films are in rolls (9) and in particular a few microns thick. In a first stage, this process consists in spreading out a first film (1) on an assembly table (5) while hemming one of its longitudinal edges with a junction tape (3) and a positioning tape (4) sealed on that side of the junction tape (4) which is opposite the film. Once the desired film length has been reached, the film is transversely cut off and the positioning tape (4) then is used to handle this first film (1) and to assure its alignment with a segment of the film (2) packed on the roll (9). The second joining stage then consists in spreading out the film (2) on the table (5) while sealing a longitudinal edge of said film (2) to the outer side of the junction tape (3) following separation of the positioning tape (4) from this junction tape (3).

  • Patent number: 4803124
Abstract: A method of bonding semiconductor chips to a mounting surface and a nozzle for same includes the steps of applying a first deposit of a die attach adhesive material to the mounting surface in a manner wherein the first deposit has the general shape of a starfish. This starfish shape is characterized by a raised central portion disposed at the intersection of the radially inner ends of a plurality of centrally thickened arms. The next step is to apply the bonding surface of a semiconductor chip against the deposit to cause the deposit to spread therebeneath while removing air pockets and hence any voids within the die attach adhesive material. The volume of the deposit being proportional to the surface area of the bonding surface and the configuration of the first deposit being defined to cause uniform and symmetrical spreading of the first deposite across the bonding surface provides full coverage of the bonding surface with a uniformly thick layer of adhesive.

  • Patent number: 4786355
Abstract: Method and apparatus for applying labels to articles which are particularly useful for articles which are relatively flimsy and dimensionally unstable, such as plastic carriers for a plurality of filled containers wherein the carrier has a top panel and a skirt extending downwardly therefrom with surface areas on the skirt for receiving labels. In the embodiment shown a series of articles are indexed through a label receiving position. Labels are transferred from a label supply and are pressed against the label receiving surface area on the skirt of the article. The opposite side of the skirt is supported against substantial movement while the label is being pressed against the skirt. An adhesive is applied to the label receiving area on the skirt as the article is being indexed into the label receiving position.

  • Patent number: 4786347
Abstract: A gas turbine engine disc having integral, radially extending aerofoil blades and an integral shroud interconnecting the radially outer extents of the blades is described. In the manufacture thereof continuous fibres are wound around an annular array of inserts provided in a dividable disc. The inserts define the spaces between adjacent blades on the disc. A mixture of chopped carbon fibre and an epoxy resin matrix material is then injected into the central portion of the die interior. Any part of the wound fibres which has not been impregnated by the chopped fibre/resin matrix material is subsequently impregnated by a matrix material whereupon the die is opened to release the thus produced bladed disc.
