  • Patent number: 7025785
Abstract: The present invention provides a device to restore hearing to individuals who have a discontinuity in the middle ear sound conductive mechanism. The device in accordance with the present invention addresses a specific problem arising often in middle ear surgery. Currently available middle ear prostheses are inadequate to remedy the specific problem of a lateral relationship of the stapes capitulum to the malleus, thereby necessitating a cartilage graft resulting in poor sound conductive properties. The present invention provides a middle ear prosthesis that solves the problems associated with the lateral relationship of the stapes capitulum to the malleus.

  • Patent number: 7022142
Abstract: A prosthetic acetabular component for a hip joint that is inserted into a bone cavity of the natural acetabulum. The acetabular component consists of an articulating component and a constraining component. The articulating component has a hemispherical or dome shape that defines a hemispherical cavity for receiving a femoral ball of a femoral hip stem. The constraining component has a body that connects to the articulating component to capture the femoral ball within the cavity of the articulating component. A locking mechanism connects the constraining component to the articulating component.

  • Patent number: 7017581
Abstract: Surgical methods and instruments are disclosed for performing port-access or closed-chest coronary artery bypass (CABG) surgery in multivessel coronary artery disease. In contrast to standard open-chest CABG surgery, which requires a median sternotomy or other gross thoracotomy to expose the patient's heart, port-access CABG surgery is performed through small incisions or access ports made through the intercostal spaces between the patient's ribs, resulting in greatly reduced pain and morbidity to the patient. In situ arterial bypass grafts, such as the internal mammary arteries and/or the right gastroepiploic artery, are prepared for grafting by thoracoscopic or laparoscopic takedown techniques. Free grafts, such as a saphenous vein graft or a free arterial graft, can be used to augment the in situ arterial grafts. The graft vessels are anastomosed to the coronary arteries under direct visualization through a cardioscopic microscope inserted through an intercostal access port.

  • Patent number: 7018417
Abstract: The present invention relates to a socket for an artificial hip joint. The present invention provides an artificial joint socket for knocking into a bone, with an excellent primary stabilization, which may be manufactured so that at least two locking elements are arranged in the distal superficies region of the socket shell. The locking elements anchor the socket shell in the hip bone and safeguard against tensile forces, torsion forces, and combined tensile and torsion forces. The locking elements effectively prevent the socket from rotating-out opposite the knock-in direction. When knocking in the implant, the locking elements cut into the bone and rotate the socket shell about the socket axis by a few degrees.

  • Patent number: 7014657
Abstract: This invention relates to surgical methods and prosthetic devices for ameliorating hearing loss in patients having ailments of the middle ear. The implant of the invention includes a gas-filled balloon having a pliant membrane of biocompatible material. The balloon is made such that the acoustic impedance presented by the balloon to the eardrum is low enough to permit the eardrum to vibrate freely in response to sound waves. Because the balloon membrane is substantially impermeable to gases and water, the implant can function effectively within the middle-ear chamber for an extended period.

  • Patent number: 7001433
Abstract: Artificial disc devices are disclosed that restore correct anatomical intervertebral spacing for damaged discs while maintaining a substantially normal range of biomechanical movement for the vertebrae between which they are implanted. The disc devices include center bearing and outer or annular bearing portions with the center bearing portion including generally axially extending locating surfaces which cooperate with the facing vertebral surfaces to resist migration. The outer bearing portion is for load bearing or load sharing with the center bearing portion and includes surfaces that extend radially toward the periphery of the vertebrae so that subsidence about the center bearing portion is minimized. Alternate forms of the disc devices include one with an axially enlarged center ball bearing having an annular ring bearing extending thereabout and another having upper and lower plate members with a central bumper member and a surrounding resilient annular member therebetween.
