  • Patent number: 5342286
Abstract: A water impervious covering for extremities is described. The covering is intended to protect a bandage or cast portion of the extremity during bathing or the like. The covering is a sack-like member having an upper lip extending above the opening in the covering. The lip has a laterally extending perforation parallel to the opening extending approximately four-fifths of the width thereof. An adhesive strip extends the entire width of the lip from one side to the other. The adhesive strip is covered with a protective removable sheet. In use, the perforation is torn to separate the lip into a tie member and a securing member. The adhesive protective sheet is then removed and the extremity inserted into the sack-like covering. The securing portion then is adhered to the surface of the extremity and the opening gathered around the extremity so that the tie member may be used to encircle the gathering and thereby secure the covering to the extremity.

  • Patent number: 5334204
Abstract: A fixation screw for attaching to a bone has at least one flute which traverses the proximal portion of the thread to form reverse cutting faces on the thread at the proximal portion. The cutting faces are arranged to cut the bone when the screw is rotated in a reverse rotational direction to ease in withdrawal of the screw. The flute forms a first plane containing the cutting faces on the thread and the axis of rotation of the screw. A base surface is formed by the flute forwardly of the cutting faces when the screw is rotated in a reverse direction. The base surface includes a rotational portion at the root diameter of the thread and a planar portion in a plane tangential to the rotational portion and arranged so that a substantial portion of the cutting face is axially offset from the leading thread to thereby engage the bone. Additionally or optionally, the thread is tapered at the proximal end to form a reverse self-tapping thread.

  • Patent number: 5314403
Abstract: A device for enhancing enjoyment of electronically reproduced music including a chair with liquid-filled bladders coupled to transducers such as electromagnetic driver assemblies responsive to audio-frequency electrical signals. A diaphragm of elastic sheet material provides support for part of the bladder and part of the transducer. Bladders and transducers are located in the seat and back of the chair, and the transducers move the liquid in the bladders, so that movement of the liquid can be felt by a user sitting in the chair. The electrical signals are preferably filtered to pass only bass frequencies to the transducers.

  • Patent number: 5295951
Abstract: An adjustable strap or band adapted to be circumferentially fitted around the forearm to alleviate the symptoms of tennis elbow. The strap is a generally band-shaped device having opposing inwardly protruding means on its forearm contacting surface to direct transaxial compression against the radial extensor, supinator complex and flexor muscles when the band is circumferentially tensioned and fastened in place around the forearm. In its preferred form, the band applies an adjustable pressure principally upon the extensor, supinator and flexor wads permitting unimpeded blood circulation along all other portions of the forearm. The two opposing means for applying transaxial compression are limited in their circumferential extent to those areas of the band immediately overlying the extensor and flexor muscle mass.

  • Patent number: 5284479
Abstract: An implanter for implanting an implant (3) in an animate being (14) includes a housing (15) on which the inner end of a hollow injection needle (2) is mounted, a plunger (6) mounted in the housing and adapted to extend into the hollow needle through the inner end of the needle, and a locking element (8, 32) for engaging with and retaining the plunger (6) against the force of compression spring (7) in a position where the plunger extends into the hollow needle for a predetermined distance. The locking element is part of a release device (9, 10; 30, 31, 33) which abuts the body (14) of the animate being when the injection needle has been introduced into the body to a predetermined depth to automatically unlock the locking element. The plunger is then forced by the spring (7) against an implant (3) disposed in operation in the injection needle for retaining the implant in the body when the injection needle is retracted from the body.
