  • Patent number: 6543267
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for substantial planarization of solder bumps. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a planarization member engageable with at least some of the plurality of outer surfaces to apply a planarization action on one or more of the outer surfaces to substantially planarize the plurality of outer surfaces, and a securing element to securely position the bumped device during engagement with the planarization member. Through application of “additive” and/or “subtractive” processes, the solder balls are substantially planarized.

  • Patent number: 6539700
Abstract: In a chain belt (1) for a continuously variable cone-pulley transmission of a vehicle, lengthwise links (3a, 3b, 3c) are connected by transverse coupling members (2a, 2b) passing through openings (4) in the links. Retainer elements (7) at the ends of the coupling members serve to secure the links against falling off the coupling members or becoming misaligned. The retainer elements are attached to at least selected individual coupling members by resistance welding.

  • Patent number: 6539769
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for straightening bridges that have had their lower girders bent by trucks passing underneath having loads higher than the clearance afforded by the bridge. The invention contemplates using a threaded rod with two clamping members to engage both the bent beam and a rigid part of the bridge to as to gradually bend the beam back into alignment by rotating a nut portion on the rod so as to turn the rod and allow one clamping member to move slowly along the rod. The clamping members have a portion designed to engage the flange area and thereby allow firm engagement of the beam by the straightening device.

  • Patent number: 6539764
Abstract: A method for manufacturing an air-gap-insulated exhaust pipe having a branch stub, as well as an exhaust pipe produced according to such a method and a tool for forming such an exhaust pipe. Two tubes are inserted into one another to form a double tube. The double tube is placed in a first internal high-pressure shaping tool, and exposed to internal high pressure fluid such that it expands to match the contours of the engraving of the first shaping tool, and a double-walled branch stub is blown out of the double tube. The partially formed double tube is then placed in a second internal high-pressure shaping tool, with the double tube being surrounded, between the two ends including the branch stub, circumferentially and throughout by a corresponding design of the engraving, by an expansion chamber.

  • Patent number: 6532784
Abstract: A process of mechanical hydroforming, in which a hollow tube is caused to expand against the interior surface of a die that surrounds the tube by hydraulic pressure applied to a liquid that fills the interior of the tube, is improved by coating the part of the exterior surface of the tube that comes into contact with the die surface against which it expands with a wax that is solid at normal room temperature but can be maintained fully melted and in contact with air, without showing any visible evidence of decomposition, at a temperature that is at least 75 degrees C. Preferably, the wax is applied to the surface to be hydroformed by spraying from melt onto the surface while the latter is maintained above the melt temperature of the wax. Shortly after the wax has been thus applied to the surface, the wax is cooled until it solidifies.

  • Patent number: 6532785
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed wherein seal units sealingly connect a hydroforming fluid pressure source with the ends of a part to be hydroformed while the part is outside an intended die cavity and wherein the seal units are then conditioned with a relatively low sealing pressure capacity. The part is prefilled through the seal units with hydroforming fluid at a relatively low pressure sufficient to prevent later pinching, buckling, splitting and cracking of the part in the die cavity during hydroforming. The prefilled part, with the seal units remaining sealingly connected, is then enclosed in the die cavity and the seal units are conditioned with a relatively high pressure sealing capacity sufficient for the continued supply of hydroforming fluid to the part through the seal units at the considerably higher pressures required for hydroforming the part.

  • Patent number: 6532725
Abstract: Rope chain link elements and a manufacturing process to make such link elements, each link element exhibiting a unique visual property, such as coloration, surface texture, reflectivity, design feature or characteristic, shape, or other visually attractive appearance. Methods of construction include surface pre-texturing, stamping, simultaneous surface texturing and stamping, and wire bending. Such unique visual property traits for the succession of link elements results in a more attractive, fanciful, more delicate and interesting fashion item. Each of the interconnected link elements may have the same or different visual properties, and may have multiple portions of varying color, texture, or other visual properties. In other aspects of the invention, each link element may have differently shaped portions, such as adjoining and connecting geometric or heart shaped segments. Additionally, the interior and/or exterior edges of the link element may exhibit different shapes, colors, patterns, or textures.

  • Patent number: 6530252
Abstract: A plurality of closing cylinder devices are provided between a bolster of a press machine and a bed containing a lower mold of a hydroforming device. An upper mold is attached to a slide of the press machine. The upper mold and lower mold come together to form a cavity having the shape of the exterior of the desired molded product. A closing block, being movable between a first position which is between the slide and a crown of the press machine, and a second position, which avoids the slide, permitting free movement of the slide from the crown to the lower mold. When a material to be hydroformed is place in the lower mold, the upper mold is lowered. The closing block is fit into its first position, thereby restricting movement of the slide in the vertical direction. A inner work pressure is provided by a fluid inside the material to be molded.

  • Patent number: 6523389
Abstract: A segmented pipe-bending die produces curvature across the pipe contacting surface of the die by varying the radii of the semi-circular pipe bending segments, or by offsetting the position of adjacent segments having equal or varying radii semi-circular apertures, laterally, longitudinally, or both. The pipe-bending die is formed from a plurality of metallic segments, which are affixed together. Each metallic segment of the die has a semi-circular pipe contacting surface portion. The radius of a plurality of the semi-circular pipe-contacting surface of each segment differs in length so that the pipe-contacting surface has a predetermined curvature formed by the resultant difference in height of the pipe contacting surface portions of each segment.
