  • Patent number: 7426466
Abstract: A method and apparatus for predictively quantizing voiced speech includes a parameter generator and a quantizer. The parameter generator is configured to extract parameters from frames of predictive speech such as voiced speech, and to transform the extracted information to a frequency-domain representation. The quantizer is configured to subtract a weighted sum of the parameters for previous frames from the parameter for the current frame. The quantizer is configured to quantize the difference value. A prototype extractor may be added to first extract a pitch period prototype to be processed by the parameter generator.

  • Patent number: 7421393
Abstract: A dialog manager and spoken dialog service having a dialog manager generated according to a method comprising selecting a top level flow controller based on application type, selecting available reusable subdialogs for each application part, developing a subdialog for each application part not having an available subdialog and testing and deploying the spoken dialog service using the selected top level flow controller, selected reusable subdialogs and developed subdialogs. The dialog manager capable of handling context shifts in a spoken dialog with a user. Application dependencies are established in the top level flow controller thus enabling the subdialogs to be reusable and to be capable of managing context shifts and mixed initiative dialogs.

  • Patent number: 7418394
Abstract: The time needed to encode an input audio stream is reduced by dividing the stream into two or more overlapping segments of audio information blocks, applying an encoding process to each segment to generate encoded segments in parallel, and appending the encoded segments to form an encoded output signal. The encoding process is responsive to one or more control parameters. Some of the control parameters, which apply to a given block, are calculated from audio information in one or more previous blocks. The length of the overlap between adjacent segments is chosen such that the differences between control parameter values and corresponding reference values at the end of the overlap interval are small enough to avoid producing audible artifacts in a signal that is obtained by decoding the encoded output signal.

  • Patent number: 7412393
Abstract: A method of developing a dialog manager for a spoken dialog service is disclosed. The method comprises selecting a top level flow controller based on application type, selecting available reusable subdialogs for each application part, developing a subdialog for each application part not having an available subdialog and testing and deploying the spoken dialog service using the selected top level flow controller, selected reusable subdialogs and developed subdialogs. The method enables a developer to create a dialog manager that has individual reusable dialog modules that operate independent of the dialog model of the other modules. Application dependencies and context shifts are defined independent of the subdialogs to enable them to be reusable. The spoken dialog server manages context shifts in the spoken dialog by transitioning between dialog modules and subdialog modules.

  • Patent number: 7409334
Abstract: A method of text processing by receiving textual units. Then, select a language and a textual unit. Identify the selected textual unit's stem and suffix. Search a rules database for the suffix. If a base suffix is found in the rules database, combine it with the stem to form a lemma. Search a lexicon database for the lemma. If the lemma is found, a model number from the lexicon database is retrieved and cross-referenced with the rules database to obtain all inflected suffixes for the selected textual unit. Combine the inflected suffixes with the stem to form inflected forms. Output a subset of inflected-forms and information associated with the lemma and inflected suffixes. The method is repeated for unprocessed textual units. If the language selected is Russian or Somali, the textual units are processed separately.

  • Patent number: 7389236
Abstract: Techniques for using open interaction elements (OIEs) in voice-enabled systems are described. OIEs include multi-select and dictation fields of a user interface, into which a user may enter multiple selections or free-form information. To allow the user to exit from such OIEs, that is, to change from a data entry mode to a navigation mode, multiple exit strategies may be simultaneously enabled for use by the user. For example, an explicit exit command may be available to the user, in addition to an implicit exit command or time-out exit strategy. In this way, users may individually select a preferred or practical way of exiting an OIE.
